Széll Kálmán tér is certainly not a pretty square, but it is an important transport hub with subway, tram and bus stops. If you want to go to Castle Hill, you can get off here and walk up or take the 16 bus. It is not pretty - but the statue of Széll Kálmán is worth seeing and is a miniature sculpture by Kolodko Mihály.

We are living on the Pest side of the city at the moment and I get the impression that most people visiting mainly discover that side (apart from key things like the Castle area and the Gellert baths on the Buda side).

So it was a treat to visit this square. It is actually only two metro stops away from the Parliament on the Pest side.

Near the square there are three parks within about ten minutes walk and it is a great transport hub. The square in the day didn't seem that attractive but at night it was nice, with the fountain lit up.

During the rebuilding and reorganization of the square, the designers made a weak effort to make the space more livable, but I can not say that they have achieved full success. It was not difficult to make this overly dilapidated neighborhood more appealing and better, but the public's expectations were put higher. Therefore, subsequent corrections were required, e.g., mounting backrests to the uncomfortable benches.
Seeing the parking difficulties of the buses, I talked with the drivers, and I have to say they were not excited. It's a big step forward to have a regular public toilet, though I do not have personal experience. A cunning solution, however, is their pricing. One visit is 180.-HUF. Who is that desperate visitor who will ask for 20.- HUF (1 cent) from a 200.- HUF coin?
Fortunately, the clock seems to work after a lot of repairs, legitimate mockery, and complaints.

Szell Kalman is one of those places everyone passes through but doesn’t spend any time in. Actually a triangle, it is one of the hubs of the excellent Budapest transport system & a number of tram, trolleybus, metro & bus stops are there. It can be difficult to find out where the connecting transport links actually are. If you want a small bus (No 16) to the castle area, by the way, go UP the escalator to find them. No 16 & variants are a good way to old Buda without spending money on the Siklo funicular: surely the most expensive ride, metre for metre, in the world. You can also get trams (59 or 61) towards the cog & children’s railways & the Buda Hills.

The ‘square’ is edged by all the usuall chain fast food places & there is a local food market just a street away. There is a pleasant water feature in the centre & various travel information places, but not much else: certainly no buildings of note. Entertainment is regularly provided on weekday afternoons by an international Christian group, ‘Youth with a Mission’, with singing & drama.

This historical square offers you numerous choices to explore many other historical places in the magnificent and majesties city of Budapest. The public transport options that operate or run through Szell Kalman Square are plentiful for travellers. Consider taking either tram 59 or 61 which run to the highest levels of tram routes in Budapest and admire the scenery on the way before the tram(s) reach there terminus. There are points of interest at either ends of the tram routes which should be of interest to travellers. On your return to Szell Kalman Square alight the tram and use either the 4 or 6 tram to take you back into the heart of central Budapest or you may choose to catch the metro as an alternative means to return you to the city or places other. Szell Kalman Square is surrounded by eatery places and if the weather permits just sitting in this place observing people going about there daily lives can be quite invigorating and interesting to take in.

The Szell Kalman Square in front of the metro station of the same name is relatively large, but rather unadorned except for the water installation and its monument
