The Munkacsy Mihaly Muzeum had been reopened since the spring of this year, after years worth of renovation(which was needed).I visited it in the summer, and frankly, I was quite impressed with what I saw there! The majestic paintings of Munkacsy(which is probably the most important hungarian painter), are the focal point of the homonym museum, and are truly worth seeing and admiring.
The ladies at the museum entrance did not speak english quite well, but I could understand what she told me about the visiting order, and which exhibition should I start with.In some parts of the museum, information is written exclusively in hungarian, so if you have the bad luck of not knowing hungarian, well....better visit with a translator. The Munkacsy paintings exhibition does have translations in english too, so the biggest attraction point in the museum is covered :)
I can only reccomend visiting this Museum!
P.S. Sadly, there is no souvenir shop there...

Arriving an hour before closing (6pm on a wintery Saturday) we spent time in two of the permanent exhibition "halls". The first, the Bekescaba local history exhibit, takes you back in time to when Bekes was a small village. There are a large number of interesting items to see however the printed descriptions are in Hungarian only. The second exhibition space we saw was dedicated to the artist Munkacsy Mihaly and had English text descriptions which was really helpful. There are both Munkacsy paintings as well as a fairly extensive collection of his personal belongings and photographs of his studio space which really help to build a picture of his life. We spent 35 minutes in total but there were plenty more exhibits to see on the first floor. The museum staff appeared keen to leave so we cut our visit short.

Mihaly Munkacsi is one of the great Hungarian painters. His work is viewed in many museums, inside and outside of Hungary, as well as government offices and a few private homes. Munkacsi trained as a carpenter and only later in life did he start drawing and eventually painting. Initially he was a portraitist, later he turned to more complex compositions., The faces, the positions and the movement in his paintings makes the subjects come alive. A prolific painter, his works can be found in New York, Bonn, Paris, Budapest and other leading museums. The museum in Bekescsaba focuses on his work, but other parts of the permanent collection include regional archaeology and anthropology, agricultural instruments and processes, a natural history section as well as collections by other artists, such as Soma Petrics and works previously held in private collections.

Really interesting visit , offering a variety of viewings. My favourite was a exhibition of the works of Eva Kolosvary-Stupler . Wonderful , so interesting pieces made of all reclaimed items . I would have returned to the museum during our stay if I had time.
Comfortable , cool not many places to sit down ..Not sure about disabled access.
