While planning East Europe tour in June 2015 we'd included Hungary and apart from Budapest chose to visit Lake Balaton. As Indians with Bengali our mother-tongue, Lake Balaton was a very special destination. Our great poet and a Nobel laureate, Rabindranath Tagore had visited this place in 1926. There's a beautiful bust of Tagore located prominently on Tagore Promenade, a fifteen minutes' walk from the Balatonfured rail station. Located at about two hours of train journey from Budapest, Balatonfured is very popular among students for a day trip. The small and quiet town along Lake Balaton is a wonderful place to spend a day. There are beautiful cafes, souvenir shops, an aquarium and a ferry station and the scenic beauty is superb. We found people fishing but returning their catch to the water, as was the rule. The lake front is beautifully decorated with colourful gardens. The cottage like houses with small gardens, the bright sunlit sky and birds chirping all around made us feel as if we were in Santiniketan in Bengal where Tagore lived and founded the university named Viswa Bharati.

It is nice to hang around next to the lake, under the trees, or sit on the benches. Flowerbeds in the green spots are changed following the seasons. Bodorka Aquarium is an option to get to know the fishes of Balaton.

This lake, the largest in the area, takes some travel time to get to, so an opportunity to walk is a is both pleasant and necessary. This area, with ample parking, stretches along the north side of the lake, and includes some great views, swimming opportunities, and local talent. The day we visited a concert band was playing.

Tagore Promenade is a nice walk along the Shore of Balaton Lake in Balatonfured. The name Tagore Promenade is given in the respect of Rabindrnath Tagore, a famous Noble laureate poet and writer of India. He was here in early 20th century.
We were in Budapest in last Easter holidays and on 5th April 2015, went to Balatonfured from Budapest. We took our train ticket(e-ticket) in advance from MAV website and it was costing £13 return for each adult.
On 4th April we reached Kelenfold Rail station from Kalvin Ter metro station in City centre, Budapest by Green Metro M4 line. It was only 7 or 8 stations and took 15 mins.
From Kelenfold Metro station, we came out and Kelenfold rail station is just besides the Metro station. We took 8-37am train from Kelenfold for Balatonfured -one of the important stops for Lake Balaton.
Due to railway modification work or some other reasons, the journey was by changing trains as follows:
1. Change train at Szekesfehervar, which was 45min journey from Kelenfold. We crossed the platform and took a beautiful heritage type 2 coach train at the other platform.
2. After about 30 mins journey at 09-17am, the train came to Balatonakarattya and we took a Rail replacement bus to Balatonkenese. This journey was for 10 mins only.
3. At 10:23am, we took the last train from Balatonkenese to Tapolca and got down at Balatonfured at 11am.
The promenade is at the shore of Lake Balaton. It was a long paved road with lots of trees on both sides. At one of the area, there were lots of status of famous poets from all over the world. The walk was for almost 1 km.
On the midway, we found a natural spring tap for drinking water. The water was full of iron and had a different taste. It helped us to digest the food.
The whole promenade was superb, all the trees were swaying in the breeze and we could hear the leaves rustling.
Overall, it was nice feeling and if I ever go to Lake Balaton again, we will walk on this promenade again and preferably in spring or autumn.
We came back to Budapest by taking the evening train.

Stopped this Christmas in a Hotel nearby, Went for a walk Boxing day to the promenade.Although cold the weather was blue skies and there were plenty of people out and about. Even though the trees were bare and little flowers it still was a pleasant experience with plenty of benches to sit and view the lake. There were the odd cafes open and it was very nice.

A promenade which offers the beautiful sight of being near Lake Balaton and the perfect shade of high trees on a hot summer day. Great atmosphere in the evening as well. Many shops, restaurants, street musicians. Just lovely!

Tasteful, clean and perfect for a wander, the area has a small marina where you can take a boat cruise around the peninsula, with shops, restaurants and bar lining the promenade it’s a perfect way to relax and walk. With dedicated walking and cycling paths you don’t have to jump out of the way all the time.
