You don't have to know the famous Hungarian author to appreciate the exhibition. Certainly, his routine, books, personal belongings make it all the more interesting for fans, but just to see how intelligent, well-off people lived by Balaton 150 years ago can be entertaining and educative.

I visited with my husband and daughter but we were able to see only half the beautiful house until a noisy school group descended like locusts. Our day turned from a quiet, peacefully restful afternoon to a noisy, unpleasant day. we were unable to view the parlor or a room to the side and could not even get out of the house because the kids were sitting in the parlor blocking the door. We milled around the kitchen area until we just walked through the middle of the group. My advice is NOT to go when school groups are in attendance.

If you want to see where did Jokai Mor, Hungary's Dickens, write his most famous novel, The Goldman, come and sink into old times in this renovated, elegant villa and garden. Take a rest under the protected trees and imagine that you are in the 19th century.

Probably not that interesting for non hungarians, but for us, it is an interesting place, you can see a lot of things that the writer used in his day to day life, and check out the table where he wrote one of his best known novel. Overall an interesting place with 5-6 rooms on one level.

We have visited Balatonfured for a few hours and had a quick look to this Memorial House. It was the place where the famous Hungarian writer wrote some of his novels. The area is very nice and to see the house is visible that in those years of that century it was a quite rich house of someone. Very nice little garden, nicely maintained with a bust of the famous writer. If someone is driving around the area it is a nice stop to have a look.

Jókai Mór Memorial House
The outstanding Hungarian writer of the 19th century, Mór Jókai wrote his probably most popu¬lar novel, the Golden Man in this villa built in 1870. This unique exhibition gives us a glance into the everyday life and social events of his family.

The work of Mór(icz) Jókai is naturally very well known in Hungary, but has also been largely translated into German, including The Gold Man. The latter novel was mainly prepared in his villa in Balatonfüred. In the museum you can see the interior of a very beautiful villa and you can also learn a lot about Jókai's life. I really liked the exhibition.
