I'm not the kind to get easily spooked.
But this place is just creepy.
Felt immediately unsafe and unwelcome, barely took 10 seconds to look at the art and left, under the eyes of the few visibly stoned men roaming around.
Don't go there if you're a solo woman, please.

I was staying quite close by and got to sample the alternative culture of this neighbourhood day and night. There's no shortage of street art, counter culture squatters and half naked madmen. Lots of street art and strange sculptures to see. Despite what some have said, I thought it was safe both day and night.

Definitely one to experience.. I'd read mixed reviews beforehand but was determined to take a look and sample the nightlife. First visited relatively early one night when it was still quite quiet, and have to admit as a solo female I chickened out after feeling a little intimidated by everyone seeming to stare at me as I strolled into the area and someone offering to sell me drugs. However I steeled myself with a little extra dutch courage and visited later on a few more nights into my holiday, this time just threw myself into it, bought a beer and sat down and started talking to people on one of the outside benches, and found everyone I met to be really, really friendly. I can understand how people can feel nervous at first, but you can have a fantastic and very different night out here if you just stop worrying and immerse yourself in it!
Also worth a visit in the daytime to admire the weird and wonderful artwork.

Old army barracks taken over by squatters to prevent it being demolished. It’s now a social and cultural centre that hosts regular events. Well worth visiting….about a fifteen minute walk from the Old town.

Funky graffiti and street art district near the city center. Interesting collection of styles and types of art. East walk from the center of Ljubljana. Some might see it as a little sketchy, but we enjoyed it.

This a an area in the style of Christiania of Copenhagen, but much smaller, more quite. A bit sketchy for the "average" tourist. I would say go if you are into art - lots of graffiti. Go if you are into anarchist ideology. Do not take pictures of people. No problems if being discrete, and making photos of graffiti. Worth for a short walk, but not much else to do.

Footed it in the heat for 15 minutes to some run-down barracks with a couple of nice murals. Most of the graffiti art was old, faded and mediocre. The grounds themselves are littered in garbage and definitely not a place I would want to be after dark. There were a couple of men there who were clearly homeless, with their belongings in shopping carts or various bags, but they kept to themselves. Of course, I was hand-in-hand with my partner who is 190 cm, so maybe that was a factor ….

I usually love exploring places like this. However, this place was effectively a decorated crack den.

We went in the afternoon and having taken a few photos I noticed 2 signs: "no photos we are not a zoo" and another rude slogan to the police.
Then a police patrol drove through a a few times. At this point I realised the 2 presumably homeless guys who had been cooking on a camp stove turned around quickly at the sights of police... as They were preparing heroin not dinner.

We quickly walked through and got out of there. The people standing around were far from friendly despite the fact i had quickly put my phone (camera) away and seemed particularly put out by tourists.

I would not return or promote this as a location to explore... they clearly don't want strangers wandering around their home.

Side note, some of the graffiti is really cool but not worth the uneasy feeling or disturbing people who don't want you there.

maybe I don't know how to appreciate "alternative art" but for me that is a place full of people which lost track in their life.
