- elpndjLakeway, Texas199 contributionsCastle Serves as an Entertainment VenueThe castle in Ljubljana is a beautiful jewel in the crown of a lovely city, but don’t expect a tone of history when visiting the castle. The city seems to have turned it into a venue rather than a historical attraction. That said, it offers beautiful views of the city, outstanding restaurants and hosts various events. We enjoyed dinner there and took in a show at the jazz club that is part of the castle complex. The jazz club was very cool, and we thoroughly enjoyed a tribute to Bob Dylan.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten September 21, 2023
- SnowyShastaPortland, Oregon2,313 contributionsScenic castle overlooking the cityWe visited the castle courtyard as the ending point of our tour of the city, followed by some time looking around on our own. We accessed the castle via the funicular, which was a quick ride but required a wait in line of about half an hour on a Saturday afternoon (no line for the ride back down). You can also access the castle via a hiking trail. Our favorite part of the castle was the tower, which you can climb via a set of wide spiral stairs, which has nice views over the castle courtyard below as well as out over Ljubljana and the river. All of this was accessible for free; we didn't pay extra for admission to the castle museum.Visited June 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten September 27, 2023
- Jo PBrough, United Kingdom596 contributionsModern Castle with City ViewsA modern rebuild of a castle. You can actually walk around most of the ground floor for free but need to pay to access some of the castle and tower. The tower has great views over the whole city. Wasn't too busy on a weekend in JuneVisited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 9, 2023
- Ruth JLondon, United Kingdom169 contributionsWonderful views looking over the cityA fantastically renovated castle that can be reached by the funicular railway but it is much more fun to walk up the steep windy path from the town. Although you can pay for a ticket, much of the castle can be accessed without eg viewing point, courtyard, shop, restaurant and Pentagon Tower. Don't miss the tower which has a stunning sound exhibition.Visited October 2023Traveled with friendsWritten October 11, 2023
- EugenieRomsey, United Kingdom3 contributionsGreat Castle and Cafe, shame about one incidentThe Castel and its design are fantastic, it was good to see all the different mixtures of materials used through out and learn about the history of the castle and the city. Unfortunately our visit was made a little sour by a rude member of staff who didn’t have any customer service skills and should perhaps think ‘if it really matters’ before approaching visitors! This experience need not of happened and perhaps in future they will think twice about how they speak to the guests visiting. Shame. Other than that I hugely recommend visiting the Castel and café for great coffee and florentines!Visited November 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 30, 2023
- Agata WWarsaw, Poland504 contributionsDisappointing if looking only for the view pointA bit disappointing as was hoping to be able to see the city from above without paying entrance fee. Was not visiting the castle inside itself, as had not enough time. No part except little shop is open for visitors. Just a small piece of the extrenal wall is open with limited visibility. Read positiv comments about cafe, but was closed at time of my visit.Visited November 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten December 2, 2023
- stephens473Nottingham, United Kingdom424 contributionsPlenty to see and doThe castle is a great place to see over the whole of the city and on a clear day you can see for miles. We did not take the tour of the castle which is 10 euros per person as several people we met said it wasn't worth it. That said there are plenty of parts of the castle you can explore for free, you can also climb the spiral staircase and walk along the battlements - great photo opportunities. There are restaurants in the courtyard which are very nice. If your driving you can park right next to the castle entrance. Plenty of history and interesting things to which you can spend as long or little as you like looking at. Great gift shop on site with plenty of interesting items if a little expensive.Visited February 2024Traveled with friendsWritten February 11, 2024
- mel7155Singapore, Singapore1,344 contributionsBoring and overpriced castlePaid €12 to enter to see 4 sites - a virtual 4D film in the history of the castle, a museum of the Slovenian people that highlights their struggle for independence and museum of puppetry, access to the highest building in Ljubljana for a not too high view of the city. The museum of Slovenia was interesting with audio, visual stimuli . The climb to the highest tower meant that you are 10m than from the highest point . Also note that when you pay the entrance fee, there usually still no toilet for non paying guess so you have to cough up 1Euro. Believe me, it is not worth your hard earned money as the guide tour is basically emotion less. Go for other attractions !Visited May 2024Traveled soloWritten May 4, 2024

You can roam around as long as you want. You pay more when you want to enter the museums/attractions/tower.Visited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 9, 2024
- Paul BExeter, United Kingdom77 contributionsI followed the advice not to pay to go inI had been told that although it was worth going to for the views, paying for entrance to the castle was not worthwhile (and not cheap). I can't comment as I followed the advice. However, the views alone were worth the effort of getting there.Visited June 2024Traveled soloWritten June 5, 2024

The Ljubljana Castle is beautiful. You can get a castle (incl.all exibits)and funicular ride ticket for the price of 13€per person.I do recommend it as a sightseeing spot. You can also have audio guide or a guided tour(which changes the price of the ticket). It took me and my husband about 2 hours to see everything. The viewing tower is a must see. There you can see the whole city in its beauty.

My wife and I walked up to the castle which took about 20 minutes.
You can take the cable car which is €2 each way per person but I'm scared of heights and could not bring myself to do it.
It is surprising on how much is in the castle from weapons that were used in those days, penitentiary with history guide in various languages, wine tasting and an expensive looking restaurant.
It is the best way to see the view of the city but it is not a pretty view.
The walk to the castle is worth it though.

If you choose to visit the castle without a ticket to one of these exhibitions, you will have had a nice walk or ride, and an expansive view over the city. There’s an excellent restaurant on top, and jazz concerts at night. But you won’t see much else unless you plunk down for one of these pricey shows, which is silly when so many castles in the area are free or nearly so.

Loved the combination of old and new architecture. The castle and surrounding park provide great views of the city in all directions. Also highly recommend the restaurant, Strelec, the 5 course menu is the best meal we had in Ljubljana, even though every meal we've had here has been great.

We visited Ljubljana Castle with a city tourist bus, which included a visit to the castle. The bus stayed there for about ten minutes, which was enough for us to look at the castle and enjoy the view of the city. The castle itself is not comparable to those in Prague and Budapest, but if you are in Ljubljana, it is worth a visit.

Historic place at 400m above sea level. The fortress offers a beautiful view of the city. The 12e ticket includes visits to museums, a return trip by cable car and an audio guide. It takes up to 2 hours to tour. Inside the fortress there is a toilet free, restaurant.

My main reason for visiting Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia was to tick it off my " List of countries to visit". Although I did some research on the place more particularly on its Old Town but I went there with no expectations. My mind was therefore open to explore the city. And look where it brought me.
Perched on top of Castle Hill and dominating the city skyline to the south, Ljubljana’s magnificent castle stands on the site of several former defensive buildings in a hilly area of land stretching away to the south of the old town.
A moderate hike or you can take the elevator up.Entrance is free, however, if you want to climb up to the tower with its amazing town and alpine views, you'll have to part with 5 Euros (3 for students) which also entitles you to watch a sweet 3-D movie.

Firstly, Ljubljana is a small city, even though is a capital, so you won't need a lot of time to see almost everything on foot. Besides those charming little streets filed with many architecture styles buildings the only place where you can be more than one hour. After going uphill, hard breathing, higher hearth rate, you are on top. The sight is amazeing, river has some fine color mixture of blue and green, so intensive. After paying tickets you are entering whole new kingdom. I was amazed by mixture of glass and brick, architecture is on point. Natural shapes are used like galery, so intesively, letting us just to be assured that downtown has nothing better to offer. Remarkable

An audio tour is a must if you want to understand and appreciate all that is part of Ljubljana Castle – its history and folklore is impressive. (Be sure to buy the right ticket for the tour and also access to some of the buildings). The buildings have been beautifully restored. The view is lovely but the Skyscraper has a better view. I give credit to the Mayor who had the vision to buy the castle and restore it, turning it into this multi-use tourist (and local) attraction. We need more mayor’s like him who think about the future. A word of warning and a friendly hint – you have to pay for the main bathroom (upon arrival with the cable car); but there is a free bathroom downstairs near audio tour stops 7 and 8 …. Personally, I find it outrageous that when you pay for admission to a museum/castle that you need to pay for the bathroom (or use one of the restaurants to use a bathroom); the girl in the gift shop said “we like our money,” when I asked about the bathroom at stop 7/8 she said “yes we have some hidden free ones”. Really!!

Grazie.
