Original and truly captivating museum!
It presents a huge collection of authentic and old steam locomotives, in a huge building (former industrial locomotive storage & maintenance hangar).

In addition to the historical heritage, it is above all impressive and very interesting to be able to observe (and touch) these railway monsters very closely (some of which exceed 5m high and 15m long).
You can also board one of the locomotives. Outside, you can also walk around and observe some abandoned locomotives.

Finally, there is a second, very informative building where we find around ten models (also authentic) of small railway vehicles used by line controllers and maintenance staff + numerous tools and communication devices used there. is many years old (telegraphs, telephones, old radios, switch control centers, etc.).

I'm not a train fan at all, but I found this museum really interesting, very fun, and above all impressive.
My 3 children (5 years old / 9 years old / 13 years old) loved this museum!!

Note that in the middle of the immense steam locomotives, there was also a large miniature train circuit, which the museum employee turned on during our visit, enough to take you back to your childhood...

It is a wonderful place to see trains as old as the beginning of last century. On a rainy day, it felt like a cinema noire atmosphere. Imposing huge trains, I would say don't miss the chance to visit, especially if you have never been to a train museum before. Lovely staff, by the way. It is not hard to walk from the center, if you enjoy walks. Easy to find. No wifi, just in case you need any.

This is a fantastic museum packed with trains and railway memorabilia. The staff are really friendly and there is lots of information in English. We loved exploring a large shed full of locomotives, including one that you could climb on.

After that we walked round outside and enjoyed the trains, tracks, old buildings and a turning circle.

The second part of the museum had displays of signals, telephones, clocks, a wooden model train, uniforms, tickets, wooden seats and some really cool track repair vehicles. Upstairs there was a small exhibition of rail-related paintings.

The gift shop is small but has some lovely items. We bought a couple of pictures and a scented candle in a railway-branded glass.

Great museum and well worth a visit.

The museum is good with a lot of bigger engines from old times and the guided tour is very informative if you have an interest in the locomotive stuff.

25 minute walk from the Old Town, this museum is I feel just off the main tourist track - which is a shame as its a great place to visit. I and a friend made the (short) walk on a Saturday morning and we ere the only visitors in the whole place.

Spread out over a couple of sheds - the main shed houses a number of lovingly restored massive old engines, whilst the opposite building houses a mix of signals, communications, uniforms and other related artefacts.

Outside at the rear the massive engine shed is the main turntable and more rolling stock and engines as well as cranes and track-side buildings.

This site is well worth a visit and is free if you have purchased the Ljubljana tourist city card (if not its not expensive - roughly 3 euros)

Its main issue is lack of signage and its out of the way location (to most tourists)

Make an effort - google its location and take a walk if your in Ljubljana!

We would've never known about this remote museum without the brochure in the tourist information shop. Then walking there, we would've never found the place if we didn't convince ourselves our GPS was right (it was). But when we got there, we're so glad we chose to visit!

I'm not sure what was more historically significant....the trains or the old wooden roundhouse. These buildings of a bygone era are practically erased from the jet-era landscape. Here, you will step back in time and see a glimpse of coal-fired transportation.

The museum is far from pristine but that's what we found alluring. It's almost like the trains were pulled in years ago and locked away. This place is truly a time capsule. Displays are multilingual so whether you speak English, German, or Slovenian, you'll learn quite a bit.

During the summer, there is a coal-burning small locomotive that will take the kids around the yard. It was great to see them working on the locomotive and getting it ready to take another generation of train lovers around the yard.

Well worth the price of admission. Not easy to find but stick with it. It's worth the journey!

As big of a railway fan as I am, I will try to be impartial with this review, but it's going to be hard. I have a real emotional attachment to this pace.

Stats:

- Acessibility: 4/5. Free parking is available on the recently remodelled adjacent street, and paid parking is available right outside the front door. The difficulties in finding the museum have been fixed by a plaque on a lamp post at the junction between the main street and the narrower acess road to the museum itself.

- Atmosphere: 4/5. A geniuine roundhouse with a fair ammount of appropriate atmosphere and aroma. A pair of locomotive lights shining at you are you enter through the front gate. However, the general state of rust, slowly growing invasive plants in far away corners and some nearby deteriorating buildings drag the score down somewhat.

- Service: 4/5. A single receptionist at the ticket office. Tour guides can be arranged in advance. Information boards in Slovene, English and German will convey some information about the exhibits. Toilets are available, as are a large number of railway-style wooden benches spread thoughout the museum.

- Content: 4/5. A broad collection of locomotives, signalling equipment, maintainance-of-way vehicles and even some paintings are available for viewing. Most locomotives are restored, but those stored outside are in variying states of decay. Several locos are also stored in a seperate, closed shed or in the roundhouse workshop, and these are only acessile with propper arrangements. Several wagons are also located on the museum grounds. The roudhouse workshop is also part of the SŽ steam programme, so if you are lucky, you might catch our beloved 25-026 or 33-037 steamed up nearby. It is also possible to climb up to, and in the case of locomotive 718, enter the cab of some locomotives.

- Hygiene: 4/5. Very clean and providing all necesary sanitaion, but with some leaks in the roof. Touching the locomotives is also ill advised, as they are coated in old diesel and fuel oil to make them shine.

Final score calculation: 4/5.

Cheap entrance fee - it's a plus. :)
(around 3 EUR)

This museum doesn't get a lot of tourists. I was alone in the whole building. But, that was really a unique experience.
There are 2 buildings - one where you can see 10-20 big hunks of iron, I mean really huge locomotives and another one where you can see some equipment. The second one wasn't so interesting.

I'm not much of a train person, but it was nice. For a train lover, this is a must see.

We drove from Croatia to visit the railway museum after seeing reviews online. There is a pay and display car park on site which was reasonable. (We paid €3 for 10 hours).

The museum is signposted on the actual street but if on foot, head towards the central railway station. It took us about 15 mins ( we used google maps).

The museum itself is spread across two buildings with an original roundhouse housing their main locative display and workshops. We had the pleasure of meeting some of the staff who gave us a tour.

There is also an amazing collection of signalling equipment, uniforms and communication equipment.

We particularly liked the mock set up of the chief’s office and the carriage seats. So glad we went and definitely worth the €3.50 entrance fee.

The Railway Museum (Železniški Muzej) is a 25 minute walk from Preseren Square but it is worth the effort. The German made 018 locomotive from the the SŽ-Series 06 (formerly the JŽ-Series 06), built in 1930, is worth the price of admission alone. It is a wonderful beast.
