Enough fruit and veg to feed a city! Tons of clothes! The smell of the fresh fruit is extraordinary, the whole market square is bathed in it. Lots to see, browse or buy. Tired feet? Lots of cafes around the square. Short of clothes? Great bargains to be had, I bought a vey nice casual shirt. We passed through on a tuesday afternoon too, far fewer stalls but still useful if you wanted to buy.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 26, 2024

- MadamJosephineMelbourne, Australia1,341 contributionsA must do if you are self cateringWe stayed in Ljub for a week self catering so this was one of the first places we visited. The excellent fruit and vegetable outdoor area had produce way better than the supermarkets in the old town. Prices didn't seem to be cheap but the strawberries we bought were the best, even better than French ones. We got chicken from the inside market which looks a bit tired and there's not a lot of choice of vendors. Whilst we had trouble finding the fish market which is downstairs under the Collonades riverside, we found a very friendly fishmonger and his fish was excellent. Always worth a wander, there are heaps of places to get a bite to eat or have a drink in the sunshine.Visited July 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten July 4, 2024
- soinic2,855 contributionsLocal, picturesque market. We didn't buy anything, but enjoyed going for a walk and taking some pictures. Plenty of fruit, vegetables ... stalls, but also clothes, some "souvenirs" ... Also indoor market for meat, fish, cheese, bread ... Under the arcades many options to sit down and order food. During Euro24, public viewing closeby.Visited July 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten July 4, 2024

There is a little area with food trucks and a seating area. We all tried different foods and all was good.Visited July 2024Traveled with familyWritten July 9, 2024

Locals shop here for fruits and vegetables. I think we were the only tourists walking about. . We visited on a Thursday around 11am and the square was perhaps 1/3 full of vendors. Fresh summer fruits were for sale. We didn’t buy anything, just walked around to soak in the ambiance We ate lunch at a truck stop nearby. Caution: everything was overly salted, so don’t recommend. We also purused the craft stalls nearby - cute handcrafts and very inexpensive.

We were in Ljubljana in October, and wandered into the market in the late afternoon so some people were already packing up, and it looked like it was smaller than other days anyway. However, it was wonderful. There were the very touristy souvenirs, but there were also unique souvenirs that are local and cultural (candies, cookies, bee hive panels, wood carvings). The people were so friendly and we really loved the market. Keep in mind that some vendors will not take credit cards, but we used the ATM nearby without any problems or high fees.

The Central Market was fun to walk through. The vendors were friendly while selling their fruits and vegetables. We made a few purchases to enjoy later on. Seeing other locals making purchases or haggling, gave you a small sense of daily local life. This market is located near the river and the Dragon Bridge. I don’t think this would be a Top 10 Must See while in Ljubljana, but we enjoyed spending 15-20 minutes strolling through the market.

The market was very quiet when visited. It wasn't very full of vendors as it was still winter.
There were a few clothing stalls and mostly fruit and veg vendors.
The produce was lovely and fresh and the raspberries were bought to eat were amazingly tasty.
I would like to see it full and bustling in the peak period with lots of vendors and more visitors.
It was a nice little market.

Didn’t really enjoy the markets very much looks cheap they way it’s set up, most of stalls are really targeted towards the locals with fruit and veggie and clothes etc.
Some smaller stalls with boutique items that may interest some tourists but really it for the locals.
Located at markets are a few good food trucks and did have an enjoyable meal there so maybe consider having lunch at markets and then see the dragon bridge.

The Ljubljana Central Market is an open-air food market located in the historic center of the city. It is one of the most popular places in Ljubljana, both among tourists and locals.
Location and access
The market is located on Vodnikov trg square, a few steps from the triple bridge. You can reach the market on foot, by bicycle or by bus.

This is a marketplace which runs along the Ljublanica River. It has interesting architectural features viewable from across or on the river, with pillars and archways. We didn't explore the entire market, which also has a lower arcade, but we walked through it at street level from the Triple Bridge to the Dragon Bridge. It was a Saturday morning, and the market was busy and bustling, with from what we could tell both locals and tourists, so it was fun to people watch. (Including the one guy who was walking around with his pet emu.) We didn't purchase anything, but there are food stalls as well as souvenirs for sale.

It seems like there's always something set up at the Central Market, but depending on when you go, that "something" could be interesting or it could be lackluster. I get that due to Covid, things are different than usual, but the Christmas market setup was really lackluster (there were a few stands selling hats and mittens, one or two selling hot drinks, and a few others).
In the summer, though, there was a food festival going on (or at least just a lot of food stalls set up), and that was nice--and quite crowded/busy.
So, I guess it depends on when you go, and what the Covid situation is like...
Nice location, in any case, right by the river and at the base of the castle.
