This square is very different from the many squares in the Old Town. It's across the river, much larger, and much less picturesque. It's a few blocks away from the river (we reached it via an underpass from Congress Square) and has a much m ore modern feel to it. It is somewhat the center of Slovenian Government, since Ljubljana is the capital of the country, and this is where Slovenian independence was declared from Yugoslavia.
The fairly large National Assembly building faces onto the square, and there's a statue on it called "Monument to the Revolution" which is dedicated in honor of the Partisans who won a victory over the Nazis in WWII.

Republic Square is the largest public square in Ljubljana. It’s the location of many prominent buildings of the city, most importantly the National Assembly Building of Slovenia. Other interesting buildings include the library of Ljubljana University, Natural History Museum of Slovenia and the History Museum of Slovenia.

One can imagine mass rallies taking place here during the communist era. It's a large square, nothing too much to see in itself, but for the history of the place it's still worth a visit. A few communist style monuments to admire.

Ok it's a square but it's so diferent from other Ljubljana attractions that a visit is mandatory. So huge, so great and so big that we feel that's another city.

It's hard to believe that this ugly and unpleasant square is located just a few meters from the much more beautiful Congress Square and old town. It's even harder to believe that it used to be a lovely garden all until 1960s when the "wise" local government concluded that Ljubljana might have urgently needed yet another North Korean style concrete square. Except during very rare events or protests you might notice that nobody hangs around this uninspiring place and that everyone seems to pass it as quickly as possible.
The eastern and northern sides of the square are dominated by the Maximarket department store and the national parliament, respectively, both in a typical socialist style.
The southern edge of the square is dominated by two buildings. The lower one is HQ of the infamous NLB bank, among locals also nicknamed as the "laundry machine" and "famous" for many corruption scandals where billions of € have disappeared.
There are two communist era monuments at the western edge. The larger one is dedicated to the communist revolution (among the bloodiest ones in Eastern Europe!) and the other one to Edvard Kardelj, the main ideologist of Yugoslav communism, massive killings and "self management" socialism that had devastated the country's economy.
There is an expensive parking garage under the square, accessible from the Šubičeva street. If you'd really like to park here, you are warmly recommended to try a cheaper one under the nearby Congress Square first.

Apart from it being the biggest square in the city, it's also adjacent to the National Assembly building. Across from the square from it there are two big corporate buildings.
Other than this, not much to see or do here.

There's not much to see so if you spend 10 minutes there, that'll be enough. However you should definitely go there because the buildings are quite fascinating and represent the communist era quite accurately.

Most of this square is modern minimalism that leaves a lot to be desired.
Even the parliament building is function over form until you get to the entrance.
Maybe they make the rest of the building plan so that this bit stands out more.
Surrounding 8 doors are 54 statues of Slovenians at work and play all without the benefits of clothes. It's more reminiscent of Scandinavia then mainland Europe (think Gustav Vigeland in Norway).

This huge square is located across from the Slovenian Parliament house, the square has a few monuments to admire, however quite bland itself.

Great contrast to Old Town, with the communist architecture, large open space and statues. Well worth a small detour to see something a bit different.
