About
National Museum of Slovenia is the oldest and the largest museum institutions in Slovenia. It was founded in 1821. The museum palace in the very centre of Ljubljana was built in 1888 and was the first building in Slovenia assigned exclusively to culture. The permanent archaeological exhibition reveals the unique past of Slovenia. Among other great exhibits you can see the earliest musical instrument in the world, the 60,000-year-old Neanderthal flute as well as the situla from Vace.

There isn't much to see. It reminds me of a warehouse wih huge amounts of furniture stored for a wholesale. The explanation is poor, it is not clear (in English) why the exhibit is important and what is its place in Slovenian history. In fact, you learn nothing about Slovenian history. The attitude of Slovenian museums show the general attitude: make "as if" - as if museum, as if exhibition. Attract tourists with nice signs and offer no value in return.

The National Museum of Slovenia is housed in a centrally located neo-Renaissance palace built between 1883 and 1885 to designs by Viljem Treo. The Museum's history goes back to 1821, to the foundation of its predecessor, the Provincial Museum of Carniola.
The museum gives an amazing insight into the history of Slovenia, including during WWI, King Alexander I and Tito. Most eye opening was the history of Slovenia breaking away from the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. I became instantly proud and impressed at Slovenia’s progressive move towards a more independent modern future. This made me understand the contrast in Ljubljana’s architecture. Since it’s independence in 1991, joining the Schengen Area, EU and NATO, Slovenia is advancing and this museum gives you a better understanding of things in Ljubljana. I immediately saw how my country (UK) was unravelling and doing the exact reverse with Brexit. A wonderful place! You must go when in Ljubljana!

A must for visitors indigenous and from abroad. Do not miss out on the VR experience ran by my man Jon. Such a mistake to miss this extraordinary opportunity would leave you with a lifetime of regret.
For a surprise:
1. On entry to the simulation, walk to the left side of the blacksmiths house.
2. Pick up the jug on the top shelf at the side of the house.
3. Punch ground with jug, while simultaneously still gripping said jug.
4. Prepare for take-off

Be warned!!! Went on 21.7 and the flute was missing due to unexplained reasons from 24.6 leaving behind a replica. Unbelievable!! Rest museum is ok but not worth of 6€ since its too small and the main attraction is not there!!

It is a very boring collection some of art pieces so poorly display. I am not surprised that museum is so deserted. It it completely waste of money. Entrance is 6€. Go somewhere else and spend better quality time. Thanks for reading review.

Interesting, detailed account of central European history from prehistoric times to medieval. Excellent displays & signage, in Slovenian and English. No cafe in museum, only coffee - if you need a food break (we were here much longer than we expected to be), the Maxi shopping center is across the street.

Ljubljana is such a pleasant outdoor walking destination that I was mildly surprised to have a leading local guide recommend the museum as the ideal starting point for a tour. Far from being a stuffy old repository, this collection of artifacts deserves much more attention and respect from visitors. The building itself recalls the Austrian-Hungarian Empire, with a splendid ceiling mural. Walk through the centuries of pre-history with one of the many dugout canoe trees that are protected by UNESCO in the nearby river marshes. And the world's oldest musical instrument -- a flute fashioned out of a bone by Neanderthals and capable of playing a full musical scale. Plus the Vače Situla, a drinking vessel from the 5th century BC showing the prehistoric figures prominently featured on Slovene passports and ID cards. The walk through history continues with Roman and Medieval artifacts. You'll receive a warm welcome and an invitation to sign the guest book. Your ticket allows you unlimited returns throughout the day.

I stopped by to have a look at the museums, I didn't realize the the Natural History and History of Slovenia were in the same building. They also had a temporary feature about history under the microscope that was pretty interesting. All were very good, It isn't a huge museum, but with several floors, it was a couple hour visit. Yeah, I saw the oldest flute, 60,000 years old, and lots of artifacts from throughout the ages. Well worth the time to come visit.

The top item in this museum is the Neanderthal flute (oldest one in the world). Some of the Roman items are also interesting like the gilded roman stature from Emona. All items had Slovenian and English labels. It's a small collection, so you could do it in an hour or two at most. The museum is in the same building as the Natural History Museum, so you can hit both if doing museum rounds (both are included in the Ljubljana card). The Natural Museum has the usual taxidermy animals, some insects, and some minerals - nothing that really stands out.

Could someone please explain the history / story with respect to the skeleton outside in the closed cage? Thank you

Hi,
may I ask, are you referring to an early medieval grave, found at Pristava in Bled and on display on the first floor of the museum on the archaeological exhibition Medieval stories from the crossroads?
Or, perhaps, the Egyptian mummy (on the ground floor)? Otherwise, it is probably something from the Slovenian Museum of Natural History, housed in the same building.
Anyway, if you're kind enough to give me some more information, I'll gladly answer you in every way that I can.
Best regards, Grega Gutman, PR Office, National museum of Slovenia
