- ANGELO VMilan, Italy4,957 contributions"Frančiškanska Cerkev Marijinega Oznanjenja" (Franciscan Church of the Annunciation) is one of the most iconic buildings in Ljubljana: it's just in front of the Triple Bridge, and you cannot miss the pink church (the pink colour is symbolic of the Franciscan order). It was built between 1646 and 1660 on a site where two or three churches stood earlier, and it was redesigned in 1858. The frescoes in the interior were painted in the mid-19th century, and the ceiling paintings were added in the first half of the 20th century. The main altar was mostly made by the Baroque sculptor Francesco Robba (1736). Next to the church there is a Franciscan monastery dating from the 13th century. It features the richest monastic library in Slovenia, with over 70,000 books, which is the oldest library in Slovenia still working. In the monastery building, next to the library, there is a small museum. When visiting, you can buy a ticket to visit only the church, or only the museum / library, or both. I did both, and they were both very good.Visited July 2024Traveled soloWritten August 6, 2024
- Roger’s1,176 contributionsThis magnificent Church of the Annunciation (Slovene: Frančiškanska cerkev Marijinega oznanjenja) is a Franciscan church in Prešeren Square. Baroque in style, it was built between 1646 and 1660. The main altar was designed by Francesco Robba. Much of the original frescoes were destroyed in the 1895 earthquake. The new frescoes were painted by the Slovenian Impressionist painter Matej Sternen. The façade is decorated with a copper statue of Notre-Dame. The building was renovated in 1993. A Franciscan monastery dating from the 13th century is connected to the church. It contains a library of over 70,000 books, including many medieval manuscripts and other incunabula. The monastery originally located in Vodnik Square was transferred to its present place at the end of the 17th century. I didn’t have time to visit the cathedral, I wonder if it is on the level of this magnificent sanctuary so striking.Visited September 2024Traveled soloWritten September 15, 2024
- sugapapaNasushiobara, Japan8,118 contributionsI visited this church while walking around the city. It is a Baroque church located in a corner of Preseren Square and is one of the symbols of Ljubljana. The most striking feature is its salmon-pink façade. Although it was built in the 17th century, the main façade was completed about half a century later due to financial problems. When it was rebuilt in the 19th century, it was repainted from its previous white color to red, the symbolic color of the Franciscan Order, and over time this color faded to its current salmon-pink color. A bronze statue of the Virgin Mary of Loreto (the Virgin Mary holding the Child) is displayed at the top of the façade.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten June 16, 2024
- LjubaNCastelfranco Veneto, Italy2,748 contributionsThis church is located in Prešeren Square which represents the heart of the city. Its intense pink facade makes it visible from various points in the Slovenian capital. It seems that for the shape of its facade its builder was inspired by that of the Church of Santa Maria Novella in Florence. The interior is in early Baroque style, note the monumental High Altar, the work of the Italian sculptor Francesco Robba. The large and precious pipe organ does not go unnoticed. The Church is one of the most significant attractions in the city.Visited December 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten August 21, 2024
- Κατερίνα Ν83 contributionsChurch in the most central square of the city! Nothing special on the outside but quite impressive on the inside! Especially these days with the decoration in the center of the church with the fatna gave a very beautiful image! Very nice church organ! And something important. You will certainly see this church if you visit Ljubljana. It's right on the fairly central Preseren Square, and a bright pink color that's visible from multiple places around the city. We enjoyed taking pictures of it as a landmark. We also took the opportunity to step inside (free to enter) for a few minutes. The interior was closed when we were first in the area (around 2:30 PM on a Saturday), with a small sign indicating hours. Since we were on the square again a couple hours later, it had reopened, so we took a look around. There are impressive frescoes on its ceiling and neat architectural details to look at and appreciate, so it was well worth the 5 minutes or so it took to enter and stroll around a little inside.

This Franciscan church does not go unnoticed by anyone visiting Ljubljana, as it is located in the most central point of the city, Presenov Square and in front of the triple bridge. Then it has an orange color that is rare but attracts a lot of attention. Inside it is interesting (not stunning), with particular emphasis on the altar.

There are countless churches across Europe, each its own museum of priceless history. But among the many we’ve toured, this Franciscan Church of the Annunciation is one of the greatest surprises we’ve ever encountered. The city of Ljubljana with a population under 300,000 is an unlikely place for this beautiful house of worship with an absolutely stunning interior!
From the enormous pipe organ and the frescoes that adorn much of the interior surface to the beautiful flooring and striking altar, this is going to rank among the most beautiful cathedrals we’ve ever visited in 80 countries! It’s easy to think you’re too tired while traveling to step into another church. But it would be an absolute tragedy if you didn’t set foot in this unbelievable gem with its jaw-dropping preservation of history!

Upon reaching Prešernov trg the stunning view of the Church of the Annunciation is something which may make one feel enchanted. On the same site where the church stands there was an older one which was replaced by that subject matter of the present review. The latter was built in the second half of the seventeenth century with the exception of the façade which was built in the aforesaid style in the first decade of the eightenth century. The nice belfry towers were also built later than the main building. The pinkish red colour of the façade and its majestic pilasters topped by ionic style capitals in the lower part and Corinthian capitals in the upper part show that one finds himself before a baroque jewel. Such a red colour is symbolic of the Franciscan order. The sides of that upper part are decorated with volutes and on the top of the front façade over a clock there is a statue of Our Lady of Loreto made by beaten copper by Matej Schreiner. It's a very nice sculpture. Likewise, the other statues placed in the three niches carved in the façade are nice ones. They represent God Father, in the niche situated above the main stone portal, and an angel and the Virgin, respectively, in the side niches. The temple concerned stands at a dominant position on Prešernov trg and it remains so in people's minds after leaving the mentioned square. The stone entrance staircase is very impressive as well as the wooden door which dates back to the 19th century. Next to the church there is a Franciscan monastery built in the thirteenth century.
Once inside one is dumbfounded by the beauty and grandiosity of the interior. It's a one nave church with six side altars and a very large choir. The high altar, designed by the Italian sculptor Francesco Robba is splendid. The painting in the middle of the altarpiece portrays a scene of the Annunciation. The three pillars on each side of the painting respectively support the upper structure of that altarpiece in the middle of which there is a stunning white sculpture representing God Father. The whole baroque ensemble in which that altarpiece consists is both marvellous and monumental. All the other paintings are also really beautiful especially the frescoes on the vault by Matej Sternen, carried out in the mid thirties of the twentieth century. The most conspicuous ones depict scenes of the Crucifixion and of the Assumption of Mary. The organ furniture made of dark brown wood and gilded ornaments, with a clock on the very top, is a real masterpiece as well as the pultit.
On sunny days there is a superb luminosity inside which makes one feel blessed by the amazing atmosphere there existing and therefore enjoy in a more positive way all the artworks which can be contemplated in that temple. It's therefore a place which must be visited when in the beautiful city of Ljubljana.

A beautiful church from the outside and located right next to the main square, though they're not really open for tourists to visit the interior. We tried going in because we weren't sure, to bump into an ongoing service. It's better to visit the Ljubljana Cathedral if you want to see the interior of churches.

This beautiful pink churh in the middle of Preseren square was just lovely.
The place was a little gem, it stood out against the typically European buildings in the square.
The interior was also exquisitely beautiful to match the outside.
We really enjoyed it.

It’s nice. It’s pretty, but not exceptional. Worth seeing, but if you don’t see it, it’s ok. On the other hand, if you are visiting Ljubljana, I really can see no reason not to go. It’s right in the center of things and you don’t have to spend more than ten minutes, tops, there. And if you are not going to be in Ljubljana, why are you even looking at this review?

Beautiful Pink church in the city centre facing the triple bridge and on the main square. The frescos inside are very beautiful including the stunning decor and the altar too is amazing. It is free to enter as well.
