E-bike tour: Cycling through Velika Planina

Velika Planina spreads on the edges of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps and is caught between the wonderful valley of Kamniška Bistrica and the Upper Savinja Valley. The shepherds that have been herding here for centuries know how fantastic this mountain haven is, far away from the city’s hustle and bustle. The shepherd’s huts themselves give the plateau its unique character, especially when the snow melts away and they come to life once again. The soft green lawns between the sinkholes and huts offer an idyllic cycling playground and astonishing views on the surrounding mountains.

E-bike tour: Explore Kras, the land of prosciutto and teran

Kras (or Karst) is a mysterious small world in itself, caught in the gusts of bora in the winter, blanketed in freshness and flower scents in the spring, caressed by sunlight in the summer, and gleaming in warm colors in the fall. An exceptional interlacement of the subterranean and aboveground Karst created an idyllic environment for maturing the Karst prosciutto and cultivating vineyards that give shelter to the famous teran. Behind the stone walls, the mystical world hides friendly, warm and hospitable people who cohabit with the landscape in their unique way, taking care of the culinary variety. The rugged countryside is a maze of secluded paths that snake between the stone walls and vineyards, and it’s a pleasant and exciting part of the world for cyclists as well.

First of all, a great personality of the tour guide makes it all so much nicer and easier! We’ve rented some e-mountain bikes and one really good full suspension bike. The destination was Planina Šija and the cottage up there, where you can get stunning views and good home made food. Nothing beats the mountains with friends.

The bike tour was definitely the highlight of my trip to Slovenia. It was brilliant, a lot of fun! The scenery was spectacular, the ride exhilarating and our guide, Nejc, was quite exceptional. We are two ladies in our 50s, with moderate fitness. Nejc was just amazing as he took so much trouble to ensure that we had the best day possible, with a suitable route for us, and was really careful with safety and comfort. He is highly knowledgeable and skilled on all aspects of biking and fitness, the countryside and Slovenia (especially as he is local) - he was fascinating to chat to. Nejc was very encouraging and he got the best out of us as some parts of the ride were challenging but very rewarding. He can tailor make the itinerary to suit levels of fitness and interests. We loved all the views, the autumn colours and mountain scenery. The electric bikes felt very safe. We absolutely loved the downhill sections. The lunch stop at the top was wonderful – we enjoyed the simple meal. It was great that Nejc took pictures of us while cycling and sent them to us later. It was very easy to book the tour, even though we booked last minute. I would love to do the trip again, or do some of the other bike trips to that area. If you are in any doubt as to whether to do it – just do it! You will love it. Thank you for a brilliant day.

What a great way to see the alps an the mountains from up close. The guide was great, very friendly and kind. We were always treated the best way possible. You’ll be in the mountains and pastures, get to see some animals. After you finish the tour you get to eat some proper local food in a local mountain wooden lodge restaurant and then he takes to see both the Bled Lake and Bohinij Lake and have some very local treat. Definitely recommend it, you can still get back to Ljubljana for late afternoon drinks and dinner. P.S: He will pick you up and drop you at your place of accommodation which is great.

We had a great time with Jernej biking in Slovenia. He was prompt in biking us up at our hotel and then took us on a wonderful electric bike ride up a military road. The bikes were excellent quality. To top that off we stopped at a tourist farm and had some homemade soup an bread (lunch for 3 was only 8 Euro!). Then we had a tour of a cheese farm and a blacksmith shop, including throwing axes. A great trip and good quality for our money. We would recommend this for anyone wanting to get out of the city and experience the Slovenian countryside. Jernej is a great guide.
