If you search for a place for recreation (hiking, running, walking) in Ljubljana, Rožnik is one of the best places in Ljubljana ⛰️ From Tivoli park to the top of Rožnik you can get in 30 minutes 💪

This top of the small hill near the capitol of Slovenia is also known under the name of "Cankarjev vrh" because there used to live great Slovenian writer who was writing between 1910 and 1917 there. Today it is known by (mainly) two things: a pub at the top (don't miss the famous Slovenian dish - "flancat" - there :)) ) and small Franciscan church in front of which there is a bonfire every year at the eve of May the 1st. Its part of the wider area of Tivoli Park. Nothing more interesting there unless you are a walking enthusiast. You can go by car there as well (if you are handicapped) but not appreciated because its hiking area and you'll need only 15-20 minutes to reach the top from any starting point around the hill.

It is an easy walk to the top as the path is quite wide and I took 45 mins from Congress square. Most people took this walk to exercise. Just follow the path that indicate "Cankarjev vrhe". I felt safe walking alone early in the morning as there were other people walking here.

Rožnik is a part of Tivoli Park in Ljubljana. It is a hill with forests and a meadow or two. It has nice views down to the city. Hill is convenient for walking, running, for relaxation. Area is not maintained as it can be during the last five years or so. Highest peak is decorated with a baroque church. It is popular gathering spot for May 1 and on some other occasions.

Roznik Hill is a walk in to the Ljubljana outskirts and is popular with joggers, dog walkers etc. The small red church is on top of the hill and adds a picturesque focus - but unless you are lucky it is unlikely to be open.

Rožnik is a small hill near Tivoli Park and Rožna dolona. Roža means flower. You can walk up to the top from all sides. It is a short, ten minutes to 15 minutes walk. You can visit Čad lokal inn at the bottom and leave your car there. You can walk up from Šiška or from a apth near the Zoo. Church is mainly closed. Inn on the top is nearly always open. You can visit a museum room - dedicated to writer Ivan Cankar.

Rožnik Hill, approx. 90 meters above the level of Ljubljana, literally just a few steps from the downtown, is a very popular (perhaps even too popular) spot among local hikers and runners. Although its name could be translated as "a flower hill", the vast majority of the hill's surface is actually covered with forests. As a downside of this, options to view the city and its surroundings are quite limited, even from the top.

On the hill's highest point there is a red church of the Visitation of St. Mary (closed most of the time), right beneath the church there are a very basic self-service inn (not sure if English is spoken), a monument to the writer Ivan Cankar, who occasionally lived in the inn, and the Cankar's memorial room.

There are a few official and many more unofficial paths to the hill. If unfamiliar with the local geography, you are warmly recommended to take the path that starts near a swimming hall in the Tivoli park; another recommended alternative path starts at the Čad inn at the end of the Kikljeva street. Or, if that sounds too complicated, just follow the crowds going to the same destination. When returning, make sure you have memorized your route! If you miss the right path, you may quickly end up in another part of Ljubljana, quite far from the original starting point.

Warning: the area may be dangerous to visit when a snow storm or other natural accident blows down trees and fences of the nearby zoo (located at the hill's SW slope) and some animals manage to escape from the zoo. For instance, in the winter of 2014, a couple of lynxes escaped and it took several days before both of them were caught. Occasionally bears from other Slovenian regions also manage to find their way to the forests of Rožnik.
