Simplistic beauty of this rebuilt cathedral, also known as,"Church of Our Lady Queen of the Polish Crown." It adds to the beauty and mystique of Old Town. Not overly loaded with ornate objects. There is a lot of history associated with this cathedral. It was originally completed in 1660, and destroyed by Nazi bombing in 1944, and subsequently rebuilt.

This remarkably beautiful church has an important place in Poland's heart. Historically it served a number of functions.
Rebuilt after the war, it is now the principal military church in Warsaw and serves the role of Military Cathedral for the total Polish army. All major military religious commemorations are held here.
The facade is beautiful. Attractive shades of colour combine with decorative architectural aspects that culminate in a double spire with a centred outstretched-arms religious figure.
Impressive bas-reliefs of major military campaigns grace the doors that also contains legends such as Serving for Christ and the motivational like Through Difficulties to the Stars Rise. An anchor and propeller allude to the military associations.
Moving inside is to see a marvellous space. Towards the rear is a fine metal lattice framing the doors. The sight along the central walkway to the ornate altar is wonderful, with arches and banners on the sides.
Much impressive statuary is to be admired. The semi-circular ceiling is grand. A highly embellished organ dominates in an elevated position at the back. A splendid vision.

This is a military cathedral, with a small museum in the basement. It is covered with decorations and memorials for the Polish armed services. It seemed that the relationship of church and state was and is extremely close in Poland, perhaps more so than in other European states currently.

I must have been in hundreds of churches, normally to experience the peace and sometimes to take photographs but, by any standards, the Field Cathedral of the Polish Army is very special and stands head and shoulders above most. It is of course a place for the Polish nation's soldiers and a homage to their courage, but it is also a lesson in elegance. You can feel the class as you enter. There are massive, metal clad, perfectly balanced, embossed doors that have clearly been created by considerable yet restrained talent. The subtle colours are a pleasure and the building smells good. Looking around, the whole architecture reflects the same dignified, tasteful style. A great deal of money has obviously been spent here, but very wisely. The cathedral is not far from the Old City Barbican, located at Długa 13/15. If ever there was a building worth going out of your way for, this is it.

The cathedral is located opposite the Warsaw Uprising Monument on the edge of the Old Town. It was completely destroyed in 1944 and so between 1946 and 1960 the church was restored to its former glory. The front façade is marked by a large tympanum pointed by a sculpture depicting the Holy Mary and sided by two low towers. On both sides of the main entrance there are a number of stone tablets commemorating notable Polish military units of the past, as well as an anchor and a propeller symbolizing two branches of the Polish armed forces. The church's lobby is marked by a number of symbolic paintings depicting some of the most prominent Polish battles and Uprisings. Additional battles are depicted on a bronze gate.
The main altar contains a sculpture of the patron saint of the church, Our Lady Queen of the Polish Crown. Beneath the sculpture there is a steel grating with hundreds of military decorations and votive plaques donated by the soldiers. To the left there is a small Chapel of the Polish Soldier - a Mausoleum of the Defenders of the Motherland. Among the battles featured on stone slabs there are the battle of Cedynia, battle of Grunwald, battle of Vienna, battle of Westerplatte, defence of Warsaw, Warsaw Uprising and the battle of Berlin, as well as other battles of World War II. A chapel to the right of the altar is devoted to the victims of the Katyn massacre. Approximately 15,000 small tablets mark the names of the Polish officers mass murdered by the NKVD in 1940, while an additional 7,000 wait for the names of those, whose bodies are yet to be found.
A good Church for those with an interest in Military History.

The leader of the church in Poland has a bishop, usually in the rank of a general (so does the Orthodox church).
The cathedral used to look completely different before ww1, when it was in a Russian style, with a big dome.
Currently, the nice part in it are the iron gates, with images of different Polish battles "for the faith", so really against non-Catholics.

I must confess that I had never heard of a military church until I came across the Field Cathedral of the Polish Army. What was equally exciting is that it had a full fledged museum inside the church.
Overall the church is magnificient but so is the musesum. The entry fee is miniscule but the history you witness is priceless.

Beautiful cathedral which is well worth a visit.
Unexpectedly there was a museum in the crypt. Only 5 zloty to enter so I rather assumed it wouldn't be much but it was stunning. Beautifully laid out, loads of artefacts and information and audio-visual displays. Most things were translated into English. Very friendly staff.
