As one travels around the city of Warsaw, you will note numerous Mermaids statues. Over the years, the Mermaid has become the symbol of Poland. One of the most significant statues is in the Old Town Square. The sculptor Konstanty Hegel designed the statue in 1855. It stood in same marketplace spot from 1855-1928 and 2000-2008. Over the missing years, it was moved to different located throughout Warsaw. In 2008, the original sculpture made of bronzed zinc was taken from the market for maintenance work. The sculpture was in extremely poor condition due to pollution damage and acts of vandalism. After repaired were completed the original sculpture was transferred to the Museum of Warsaw, and a replica of the original was made by Jacek Guzera and returned to the Old Town Square. According to locals’ historians, there are several legends about the mermaid. Tour guides say the mermaid decided to stay after stopping on a riverbank near the Old Town centuries ago. Fishermen noticed something was creating waves, tangling nets, and releasing their fish. They planned to trap the creature, then heard her singing and fell in love with her. A rich merchant trapped and imprisoned the mermaid. Hearing her cries, the fishermen rescued and freed her. As a reward for her freedom, she wowed to protect the fisherman forever. Ever since, the mermaid, armed with a sword and a shield, has been ready to help protect the city and its residents. The Little Mermaid in Copenhagen is supposed to be the Warsaw mermaid's little sister and they went separate ways from the Baltic Sea. Today, the image of the mermaid armed with a sword and shield appears in the coat of arms of Warsaw. It is said that from time to time, the mermaid emerges from the Vistula River and looks at the ever-changing capital. True, who knows? An interesting story. As you travel around Warsaw, glance around carefully. You will find mermaids in many places throughout Warsaw. There are mermaid monuments in the Old Town Square, on the Vistula River and on the Markiewicz viaduct near the Hotel Bristol. A beautiful tale and a spectacular statue well worth viewing.

A symbol of Warsaw. One of those things whereby if you are in the area then you'll see it anyway and as everyone goes to see the Old Town Square, you'll see it as part of that. Apparantly there is an ice rink in the winter.

A visit to the Warsaw Mermaid is a must if you’re in the Old Town marketplace. Though the statue is a replica, it’s still beautiful and makes for a nice picture. Be sure to learn about the history (folklore) of the Syrenka Warszawska and it became a symbol of Warsaw.

This beautiful sculpture is located in Warsaw's Old Town Square. It was made in 1855. At the moment, the original sculpture is in the Museum of Warsaw and the square one is a copy.

The legend tells that she was originated from the Baltic Sea, where she had a twin sister, the famous Little Mermaid of Copenhagen.

In winter, a skating rink is built around the statue.

A icon in Rynek Starego Miasta as this old square is called. This mermaid is a simbol for Warsaw since the ancient times when as the legend says a mermaid swimming in Vistul river was captured and after being released she promised to protect the cilty.
It makes great pictures with the colorful façades of houses as background.

Mermaid sits in middle of nice square with restaurant and nice colorful buildings. Don’t overlook this attraction as it located north of the old town square.

Not to be confused with childrens' books variants of fair mermaids this one wields both a sword and a shield and seems well trained in their use.
