Peaceful countryside location sensitively preserving a dark history

Set in beautiful woodland, the Treblinka Museum and Extermination Camp are a sobering reminder of recent history. The museum is free and the nearby stone tributes around the death camp site are a suitable and appropriate tribute to the horrors that occurred there.

The site is peaceful and respectful, and provides a gentle recreation of some of the experiences there. A sobering experience, but very touching and worthwhile.

Our tour guide Jacek Jaron was very knowledgeable and a pleasant, friendly companion throughout the tour. He was booked via AB Poland tours.

Desolate, sad, brutal

Treblinka was the most 'efficient' of the extermination camps in Poland, killing more than 800,000 Jewish people in a year, before an uprising forced its closure and destruction by the retreating Germans. It is just 90 minutes from Warsaw, at the end of a side road off the main highway and unlike Auschwitz-Birkenau it is left in its raw state.

Unlike the Auschwitz complex which is massive, this is a tiny place, but then unlike Auschwitz there was never an intention to work people to death; they were gassed on arrival; up to 17,000 people a day.

There's a small museum but the place is easy to explore on foot. Take your own drinks and any snacks as there's little else here. The central area is dominated by a massive monument, and surrounded by rocks which recall each of the thousands of Jewish communities uprooted and shipped here for extermination. This is not a place for the faint-hearted; I held it all together until I saw the memorial and the burial pits and then the tears simply would not stop. A mark of man's inhumanity to man.

More moving than Auschwitz

I've been to Auschwitz on a few occassions now but it didn't move me as much as this place did. The fact that it was totally destroyed by the Nazi made it more moving. The day we went you could have counted the number of visitors on your hand, not like Auschwitz where there was hoards of people. Here we had time to stroll pass the masses of rocks which represent the countries and towns where the victims came from. Our guide was superb and very knowledgeable and even took us to the other camp which was for the labour force. A truly sombering experience. Not easy to get to as an independent traveller so would suggest booking a tour from Warsaw.

Terrible company, avoid at all costs

This tour company is terrible and should be avoided at all costs.

First, let's start with the price. I paid $430 USD for this tour, which is more than quadruple the average $93 price that is listed on TripAdvisor. Because I signed up for a standard car that seats 1-3 people, I assumed this might mean it would be a private car. Instead, I was in a van with 6 other guests, packed like sardines, and uncomfortably sitting in the middle and the back.

When I made this reservation on TripAdvisor, it said the day would start at 6:30am. The night before, I received an email saying it would instead start at 10am. I was picked up at 10am, we arrived for lunch at 3:45pm (almost 6 hour drive) were rushed into eating our lunch in 10 minutes. We then went to the first museum where we waited for the guide for 20 minutes. Then we toured the first museum for 1 hour and 20 minutes (I timed), then went to the other museum for about an hour. After factoring in time to transfer between sites, we left to return at 7pm and got back at about midnight (5 hour return). So, in total, we were about 11 hours driving and less than 2.5 hours in the museum. I was not able to eat dinner. I do not think that anyone expects this when making the booking.

We were herded through the museum like cattle. I have relatives who died in the Holocaust, and I hoped for this to be a place for quiet introspection. Not at all, it was a chaotic race to get out of there as fast as possible. The guide spoke so fast that she barely even stopped for questions.

During the very long van ride I emailed the company to express how disappointed I was. To placate me, they promised a partial refund. But two weeks later, I have no refund and after the day of the trip, they stopped responding to me.

Dear Ryan, As we believe there is always room for improvement, we appreciate your opinion. Let us refer to the points you mentioned. In terms of transportation, you had 2 options to choose from at the moment of booking: group transportation and private transportation (at extra charge). As you chose the group option, other participants could join you in the minibus. As we want all the tour details to be clear and visible to our customers, the tour description on Trip Advisor includes the following information: "It is the tour by car, maximum 8 participants in the group. Standard car for this tour is sedan (saloon) compact car or Opel Vivaro depending on the final group size." "Please mind that the tour is not private. For private transportation (extra paid) please contact us". In terms of pick-up time, the tour description says the pick up can be between 6AM and 10AM and that we send the exact pick up time one day before the tour. Journey to Auschwitz takes around 4,5 hours including breaks. We try to provide the most convenient means of transportation for our customers, such as Opel Vivaro, Mercedes Vito (extra paid) or Mercedes V-class (extra paid). Furthermore, we always assure our guests have at least 45 minutes for lunch. Perhaps there was some serious traffic on the day of your tour, which is out of our control. However, our driver confirmed all the tourists were provided lunch on that day. As for Auschwitz Museum, it is one of the busiest places of memorial in Poland. Crowds are unavoidable in high season and we have no control over it. What is more, Auschwitz Museum only allows their own licensed, on-site guides inside. The groups in Auschwitz Museum have a very fixed limited time inside and the guides simply want the tourists to see as much as possible. We indeed received several messages from you on the day of the tour. We responded right away, offering a way of solution, but we received no reply. If you visit Poland again and decide to trust us again, please contact us for a special promocode. Warm regards.

If you think Auschwitz Birkenau was horrific you must visit Treblinka!

Having visited Auschwitz we visited independently arranged our visit through 'VIP travel of Warsaw'. Miles from anywhere Treblinka has a small museum onsite with plans and maps of both Treblinka former sites (Concentration Camp & Extermination Camp) our driver took us to all parts of the camps; the monuments and graves were unbelievable. 900,000 exterminated in around 15 months, and all hidden in a Forrest. Each stone standing as part of the monuments representing a village or town "cleansed" these stones reaching as far as the eye could see! A must for those interested in such history; an interesting day thanks to our excellent chauffeur.

Very interesting

This camp is a long way from Warsaw, about 2 hours and would be difficult to find yourself without a guide (probably why the Germans built it there in the first place)
We went over the Easter weekend and it was very quiet, however the guide said it was like that most of the year. I have to say it was probably a better experience with the peacefulness. There is a bit of a museum to start off with and that give you a very good idea of how the camp use to look ( as it no longer stands, as the Nazis destroyed in in hope of covering u that they had done!) There is also a short film that you can watch too.
I won't go into too much detail about what is there, as if you are thinking of going, you should go. It is a very moving place and well worth the trip out there.

Very nice Museum but very saddening!!

The Treblinka Museum is located about 110 km away from Waersaw. You have to go in a tour or rent a car and drive. There is no public transportation available.
The camp is divided into three division, first one is Extermination camp, then labor camp and then execution camp.
Your heart feels with sorrow to hear and see that more than 800000 people were killed here and they were not even soldiers or waging war, they were innocent people most of them Jews.
There are not to many buildings or ruins left as Germans try to liquidate the camps after they start loosing war.
The best way to go is rent a car for a day for about $ 60 per day and drive there and once there you can also drive from camp one to camp 2 and 3 which is about 3 km away.
But if you go, be prepared to hear some sad stories.

Not a camp only ruin

I made some search on internet. When I am going to Warsaw, I also planned to going to Treblinka Nazi Camp. I spent approximately two hours on the road by car. When I am getting to gate of ruin, they sad only accept Zloti not Euro not Credit Card etc. An helpful woman helped us and exchanged our Euro to Zloti. Then we can get it entrance ticket. There was photos of camp on ticket and I am very hopeful about camp. When we start to walk I realized to I was walking into to jungle. There is only memorial statue and other parts was in the forest and signation plates. So there is no camp buildings only you can find ruin of camp. Have to consider about during your planning of trip.

Teblinka Nazi Death Camp

In March 2012 I took a tour of the infamous Treblinka Death Camp about a two hour drive from Warsaw, Poland. Since it was March, the weather was cold (30 degrees F and -1 degree C) with snow flurries in the air. The good part was that there were very few people in Treblinka. My expert guide, Ania (with Intopoland.com) spoke excellent English and knew the sad history of Treblinka well. I would highly recommend her and her company. We spent about 2 1/2 hours at the site, including the museum and model of Treblinka II. The Nazi's destroyed most of Treblinka, but the railroad tracks and moving memorials tell the story, along with the model in the museum. As an historian with special interest in World War II, I found the tour of Treblinka informative and more emotionally charged than anticipated. The camp, which was constructed as part of Operation Reinhard, operated only a little over one year -- July 23, 1942 to October 19, 1943. During this time, between 780,863 and 870,000 men, women, and children were murdered there. It is a must visit for those interested in history, and more importantly for those who never want mankind to experience such atrocities again.

A very sobering moving place

We went to Treblinka on July 28th with Anna from IntoPoland. She was a very knowledgeable guide, she took us by car to each division as it was too hot and far to walk. The first section was a museum, this had a scale model of the camp, with pictures and accounts of who was there and their importance. We left here and went to the first part, this is where the gas chambers were, they buried their victims at first, then decided to dig them up and burn them on huge racks, there is a replica of this. Everywhere you look there are stones marking families lost, the towns they were from, upto 1 million people were murdered here in approx 1 yr, mostly Jews. There is a huge memorial stone for the Jews which marks the entrance here, this is now protected as a Jewish Cemetery.

There is also a Quarry that the fitter men and women worked in, and finally the living quarters for the SS, only the foundations remain here.

Well worth the visit, highly recommend Anna and Intopoland too.
