The Monument to the Ghetto Heroes, (Pomnik Bohaterów Getta), commemorates the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising of 1943 during WW2 and the German occupation of Poland. The monument is located in the area which was formerly a part of the Warsaw Ghetto, at the spot where the first armed clash of the uprising took place. The monument is built partly of Nazi German materials originally brought to Warsaw in 1942 by Albert Speer for his planned works. The completed monument was formally unveiled in April 1948. The monument can be found very close to the popular POLIN Museum.

Ghetto Heroes Square is adjacent to the excellent POLIN Museum of the History of the Polish Jews. The Ghetto Heroes Monument pays tribute to those who defended the ghetto during the Ghetto Uprising. The man in the center is Mordechaj Anielewicz, commander of the Jewish Combat Organization. (The nearby street was named after him.)

Another hero is Jan Karski, who documented what the Nazis were doing and passed that information to Britain and the U.S. His monument is nearby. There is also a marker for Irena Sendler, who saved many Jewish babies from the Warsaw Ghetto.

When my wife & I travelled to Poland, and a pretty little town called Oswiecim, just nearby we visited a terrible place.
My beautiful wife collected a lovely smooth rock from the ground where we visited.
I collect rocks from all places we have travelled and this was going to be a very special rock from our trip, based on the history this small item had seen and endured since the Nazi's built hell on earth we all know as Auschwitz.
This small rock if could speak, would tell hundreds of thousands of stories, hopes, dreams, sadness and sorrow. Also this small rock would have seen and bore witness to some of the worlds most unbelievable atrocities, unspeakable acts of terror, violence, humiliation and also cowardes & courage.
WOW
What a thing I have just placed in my pocket!

This troubled me to the point of not wanting to keep this in my pocket, however we both needed to never forget what we have now witnessed and needed to remember every time we picked up or looked at this wonderful little rock.

UNTIL:

We were brought to this most stunningly beautiful Jewish Ghetto Memorial.
Without saying a word to each other, my wife gestured at the monument, and I knew exactly what we both wanted and needed to do with this little rock.

The day we arrived, it was sub zero temperatures, very icy and snowing.
I made the journey to the upper step of the memorial, grabbed the little rock from my pocket, and placed it alongside others that adorned the steps of this magnificent piece of architecture.
The feelings of sadness, happiness, relief, sorry all flooded through me as I placed this stone.

A truly amazing feeling at a truly amazing memorial.

Ensure you get a local tour guide to show you all about this monument, as well as everything else that happened in this beautiful town.

A MUST see before traveling to Warsaw is Adrian Broadie in "The Pianist" If history is your thing, this movie is a must see for all who will travel to Warsaw.

Please be careful as this monument when wet, or icy, is totally void of any type of traction and slippery beyond imagination.

However I survived.
Millions who this memorial is dedicated to did not.

This haunting monument, where school kids from Israel come to remember their slain ancestors almost every day, is a reminder to us all, that the Holocaust happened quite recently, and that all the inhumane crimes committed, were committed by human beings.
This monument, despite being silent, screams "NEVER AGAIN!" in a strong and clear voice.
Try to visit the monument while a ceremony of an Israeli school takes place.
Listening to those young kids sing the Israeli anthem will be an experience you'd never forget.

At present, with a big financial support of Polish Governement and
the funds from donors and Warsaw Municipality, close to Ghetto
Memorial a new Jewish Museum is under construction. This will
show and bring back to the public in near time the fight for freedom and surivival of many Jews in Poland!

Situated just outside the Polin Museum, you'll find this memorial to the Warsaw Ghetto heroes. Ironically, the site of their last stand is a short walk from here, albeit in a simple, wholly hard to see park/site where the bunker is covered over and some of them are still buried down there after fighting to the end. The memorial is right over where part of the Warsaw ghetto wall was located, and the ghetto itself. Hard to grasp the horrors they experienced and the cruelty senselessly shown towards them. Best to visit the Polin Museum first, then come outside with a newfound or newly energized appreciation for the courage and resistance shown by these heroes.

A moving tribute to those who suffered, the moment somewhat ruined for us by a German (or Austrian?) couple who were allowing their kids climb all over the flowers and lower part of the monument, incredibly rude and ignorant behaviour, perhaps a guard is needed to enforce common decency or maybe people could actually try to control their kids instead of treating the entire world as one giant crèche.

A visit not just to the monument itself but for what it represents. Throughout the city there are testimonies of the atrocities of that period and not only that, this monument is only the most explicit @gargio76

This wall stands at a very sensitive place, to remind us of the miseries of the human race, how cruel the man can be at our darkest times. Still, hope and fight can lead us out to better times. This is a fitting memorial to those fighters who couldn't take it anymore, and despite being outnumbered fought against a stronger enemy for their life, until the very end. A moving experience, a must for every visitor to Warsaw.
