About
The Royal Castle in Warsaw (Polish: Zamek Królewski w Warszawie) is a castle residency that formerly served throughout the centuries as the official residence of the Polish monarchs. Initially the complex served as the residence of the Dukes of Masovia, and since the sixteenth century, the seat of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth: the King and Parliament. In its long history the Royal Castle was repeatedly plundered and devastated by the invading Swedish, Brandenburgian, Prussian and Tsarist armies. Burned and looted by the Nazi Germans following the Invasion of Poland in 1939 and almost completely destroyed in 1944 after the failed Warsaw Uprising, the Castle was completely rebuilt and reconstructed. Reconstruction of the castle carried out in 1971–1984 was led by the Civic Committee, responsible for the reconstruction of Warsaw. In 1980, the Royal Castle, together with the Old Town was registered as a protected UNESCO World Heritage Site.

- SellestBushey, United Kingdom5,224 contributionsStunning interiorVisited here last week and was stunned by the grandeur of the interior – more like a palace than a castle. I was very lucky in that entrance to the castle was free throughout November so I did not have to pay for the tour (which is self-guided) Although there was an option to purchase an extra audio tour (which I did not bother with as I was a little limed for time). There was a slight wait upon arrival as they were limiting numbers (there were several groups of school children, but I'm wondering whether this was due to the fact that entrance was free this month) but I was very soon inside. There is a cloakroom at the start and then you simply follow the route around the castle taking in the many gorgeous and opulent rooms adorned with beautiful paintings and artefacts. There was also an orchestra playing. You can also walk around the gardens outside. I would allow a good hour here at least.Dear Sellest, Thank you so much for your visit and this lovely review. In November, we had some limitations due to the Covid restrictions. You should come back and see the gardens in full bloom. 🌹 Thank you one more time, All the best, and we look forward to seeing you again.Written May 23, 2022This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited November 2021Written December 4, 2021
- Traveler OWashington DC, District of Columbia887 contributionsRoyal Castle rebuiltAn excellent effort to rebuild and return Warsaw and it's royal history to its former glory. Museum is worth a visit, although recommend not bringing kids under 12 years old. An audio guide is very helpful to have, otherwise it's difficult to decipher alot of the meaning and history of what you're seeing. Unfortunately, many of the royal treasures were looted and lost during World War II, but they've done a fantastic job reenacting every room. It's right in the center of Castle Square and when you're done there are plenty of places to get a meal or sit in the shade and relax.Visited July 2019Written February 24, 2020
- Juli FCrawley, United Kingdom84 contributionsDon't miss this! The castle did not look like it was very big from the outside, so we did not think there would actually be very much to see, but once inside it was an incredible surprise! Completely reconstructed after the war, it was just stunning. The audio guide was invaluable in helping us to learn about its history and the efforts to save items such as its artwork. Wherever possible, fragments of the original castle were included in the reconstruction. It was a very poignant and inspiring tribute to the resilience of the Polish people and how much effort they have put in to rebuilding Warsaw.Visited December 2019Written January 2, 2020
- MadeleineAustria1 contributionUnfriendly, rude- do NOT recommendWe went on a Wednesday when entry was free and looking back I'm very glad I didn't spend a penny!! The whole disaster started at the entrance, when the unfriendly staff at the counter gave us the tickets. As we were about to go in, a security guard stopped us and ordered us to take off our jackets. Otherwise we were not allowed to enter the castle! On the tour itself, there were security guards in every room, who monitored and disciplined us at every step, so we couldn't enjoy the tour. You weren't even allowed to go back one room. Overall everyone was so rude and condescending. NEVER AGAIN! DO NOT RECOMMEND!Visited March 2023Traveled with friendsWritten March 29, 2023
- HalcatraEdinburgh, United Kingdom483 contributionsBeautiful but...It is a beautiful place. As Warsaw was almost totally destructed during II World War, it needed to be built from the foundations. But great job was done and it looks really great nowadays. Inside you will find a lot of art masterpieces, definitely worth seeing. It is a must for any visitors in Warsaw. I cannot give five stars though, because of the staff attitude. Smile costs nothing - lesson which most of them should be tought. Visitors are not asking the questions because they are horrible people, they ask them, because they want to learn something...Dear Halcatra, Thank you so much for your review. And we do agree that smile cost nothing. And we are sorry that you had this experience. We will be working on this, and thank you again for the feedback. Constructive criticism is crucial to improvement. All the best from Warsaw and hopefully see you again.Written October 22, 2020This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited February 2020Written February 4, 2020
- AngelaMarieWindsor, Connecticut12 contributionsHostile Security Guards Ruined the TourThe interior of the Castle was very nice, we did the audio guide and one of them kept malfunctioning. However, what should have been a perfectly pleasant tour was ruined by the overbearing security personal who more closely resembled surly prison guides. What promised to be a regal and uplifting experience turned into an oppressive boarding on sinister one. Lots of beautiful treasures, too bad, because we couldn’t wait to get out of there. At one, point, we were sitting quietly in a downstairs rest area with benches when two of the “prison guides” stood staring daggers at us. What a shameful disgrace to have such a National Treasure so poorly served by its employees. Not even the Swiss Guard at the Vatican could compare to these characters.Visited August 2023Traveled with familyWritten August 9, 2023

- HentonnWarsaw, Poland1,729 contributionssymbol of the independence of PolandThe castel was official residence of the Polish kings. Sometimes was robbed by the invadors. During the partitions of Poland in 19th century majority of the collections were taken to Russia. Some things returned to Poland after the WW1. The castle was in flames in September 1939. Polish people were trying to salvage the most precious art collections. During the occupation many things were dismantled and taken away to Germany. In October 1939 Hitler issued the order to blow up the castle. It was blasted by German sappers in September 1944 during the Warsaw Uprising. Reconstructed very precisely, some original things returned to its interiors. Nice apartments, beautiful sculpurtes, Canaletto, Lanckoronski collections with two Rembrand's paintings. Constitution of 3 May 1791, the first one in Europe. Audioguide recomended. The castle as a part of Old Town is on the UNESCO list as 'an outstanding example of a near-total reconstruction of a span of history covering the 13th to the 20th century'.Visited January 2020Written January 11, 2020

Once you get used to the one way system and get through the beginning with the large cloakroom then the tour with the audio guide becomes very enjoyable. Each room has lots of interesting history with incredible pictures and portraits on the wall. You could easily spend a couple hours exploringDear Drum_Davey, what a joy to read such a review! It's a pleasure to see the castle in such a state, given its history. The ticket prices are a bit high though. A Rembrandt exhibition is also worthwile.Thank you so much for your visit! Not your typical museum, but rather a rebuilt Royal Palace and refurnished similar to what it looked like before being destroyed during WW2. Although not loaded with things to view, it is elegant and magnificent.

You will easily find this red brick Zamek Królewski (Royal Castle) when you get to Old town. I was built in the 15th century for Polish monarchs but it was destroyed after World War II and restored like other medieval buildings in Old Town after the war. some of the paintings were returned, included Rembrandts but do not expect a large collection here, I was in fact kind of disappointed as the palace is quiet empty.. I particularly like the floor pattern on this palace, it's unique! The Marble Room and The Conference Room and the European Monarchs' Portraiture Room are the most glamour part .
This is the top three must visit in Warsaw, and don't miss it.

The castle was totally destroyed after the Warsaw Uprising, so what you can see inside is the collection of different kind of art from the past times, and you can also learn about the history of the building, its destruction and rebuilding.
Helpful hint: try to visit on Sunday, the entrance is free.

Although a total reconstruction of the second half of the last century, the Warsaw Castle is a landmark of history, art and architecture of this wonderful city!
Must visit and with little cash you can take advantage of a very well done audio guide that is essential to introduce visitors to this building.
There can be no visit to Warsaw without proper visit to this castle! at least 120 minutes visit is required! @gargio76

It's a palace, it does not really hold anything different than the other palaces in Europe, lots of pictures, vases, gold...period.
The visit taks on our and a alf according to the leaflet (in English and Polish) that comes attached with the ticket, I think I have got it done in 30 minutes.
Taking pictures is not allowed.
Personnel does not talk English and the way to go isn't clearly identified so I have had guards calling me up for going the wrong way (how could I know?). All tags and labels are in Polish only.

The castle is amazing, a major achievement of the nation after the destruction of Warsaw by Germans in 1945. However, the way it is currently operated is that hundreds of people are gathering outside the entrance, without any guidance how to get in, just getting communally upset at each other.
I think in one of the country's main attractions, Poland can do better than that. There should be a separate entrance for school groups, separate for individual tourists, there even could be a sign in English somewhere.

The Royal Castle has a history going back over 700 years, and has been painstakingly rebuilt after nearly being destroyed during WW2.
A tour of the palace is made easier by using the audio guide. For about $5 you can rent the device and headphones, and the tour takes around one hour. Well worth it in my experience.
The newly renovated garden is free to visit, and it's a beautiful addition. Since it's right at the entrance to the Old Town it is a no-brainer to visit the castle. The courtyard and garden can be freely accessed, though the castle itself may not be accessed without a ticket.

We visited the Royal Castle during our recent visit to Warsaw. The place itself is great. I was very surprised at how complete it looked and how it was so very full of Exhibits given how it was plundered and then destroyed during the war. It was very well presented with lots to see. The staff who were on duty were not having a good day when we visited. The lady at the ticket desk just threw the tickets at us, the lady at the entrance shouted for us to go downstairs to a cloakroom in Polish (you have to hand in your coat before you went in - I hadn't realised). Finally, the staff guarding the exhibits were very overbearing and miserable. It was a shame as I would have ordinarily really enjoyed it but on this occasion I was quite relieved to get out!

The staff here were horrible, from buying our tickets to leaving we felt unwelcome. The actual castle had beautiful rooms but no historical insight, none of the paintings had any information attached, hardly learnt anything here and didn’t want to stay in a room for too long as we felt we were constantly being watched. The moment we moved from one room to the next the staff followed us and stared as if we were criminals or would break something. We were often told off for doing things everyone else seemed to be doing - my boyfriend was told to carry his backpack when plenty of others had theirs on their back, we were also told we couldn’t go up a staircase after going to the toilet, whilst 3 other visitors walked up not 3 seconds later. Horrible staff, wouldn’t recommend going here and it definitely isn’t needed to get an insight into Warsaw culture.

With your ticket you get an illustrated leaflet with map and short description of the most interesting rooms. Also, as you tour the rooms THERE ARE explanations on stands both on Polish and English. It's enough if you're not interested to tiny details.
You can buy an audio guide at start, but I personally didn't find it necessary, and it's more time consuming.

I would say three to four because I also visited the Gallery there (separate entrance fee- well worth it) You are better to allow more time and if you leave early there are dozens of great restaurants around the castle to enjoy a snack at.
