Grzegorz Oledzki was our guide for a Jewish Warsaw Walking Tour, and we would enthusiastically recommend his services for anyone interested in visiting the ghetto and related sites pertaining to the history of the 300,000 Jews who once lived here. He met us at our hotel and walked us to a nearby functioning synagogue, metro to Umschlagplatz, train platform from where deportations occurred, the Jewish History museum and its impressive monuments, the memorial park where martyrs of Mila 18 died, the place where once stood the wooden bridge connecting the large ghetto to the small ghetto, in short, every significant spot. He punctuated every stop with the history, human interest stories, and photos of what it looked like in the pre-war years. We ended with a bus ride back to the hotel area and standing near a piece of the original ghetto wall while he read us a moving poem written by one imprisoned there. For close to four hours he had us fascinated while teaching us. Truly a wonderful walking tour with a wonderful guide.

I found a local husband and wife team who guided five of us around the Old Town and around the most visited sites, on a golf buggy. This was a novel way to site see areas that a large commercial coach couldn't access without doing lots of walking. We rode on the foot path (side walks), parked where we wanted and received the most amazing information about each site, location and the history of Warsaw. They stopped at different locations for as long as we needed to take photos or to feel and absorb the atmosphere of each site, without rushing. This was also a great way to support the locals who are genuinely interested in promoting their town. It only cost us 30 Euros for five people and I'd recommend this type of site seeing to anyone who wants to listen to the locals' stories.

After visiting Warsaw earlier in the year and leaving feeling I couldn't really answer the question "so what is Warsaw like?", I decided to find out during this visit. I found Greg on trip advisor, read some of the positive reviews and decided to give it a go. The online booking was promptly confirmed by email and fortunately a fine day prevailed and over the four hours in Greg's company, I was shown more than I could have expected and learnt intriguing insights into the city and its history. Greg is a walking encyclopaedia! The details and intimate knowledge of Polish history is astounding. I can now leave Warsaw feeling I have not missed anything and have a much greater understanding of the history of this fantastic city.
