This square was constructed between 1950-52. It was originally intended to serve as the focal point of the First of May parades.

Since the 1960s, the square has been a car park.

The main sight is the three monumental street lamps at the end of the square.

Very busy traffic intersection, but with many little shops, cafés and an escape room around. Nice coffee at Green Caffè Nero, baked potato with toppings at Groole (Sniadeckich street) and from there Escape Room Warsaw across the street. Fun times.

Built during the communist era as an example of social architecture and a focal point for parades, the large square is one of the two prominent surviving landmarks from the era (the other being the palace of science and culture). It is now a popular tourist attraction and shopping destination. The main highlight of the square are three large concrete candelbaras to one side of the square.

Worth a short visit.

Warsaw was utterly destroyed during the war, and the next communist government had to rebuild it. It took the opportunity to de-bourgoise the main Marshall Street. A new, monumental square was thus built, with large buildings around (all caled MDM, Marhall Street's Residential District) and and great light posts, as well as reliefs of workers on the building.

Some think it's ugly, but I think it's beautiful: symmetric to some extent, monumental, ellegant and modestly ornamented. Recently its charm was spoilt by renovating two sides of it in two different colours.

There were ideas to move Marszałkowska (Marshal's) Street a bit aside, so it would end nicely with the axis of the Saviour's church, but president Bierut decided a view of the church is not a good view at all.

You can reach the square by tram and by a bus.
There was supposed to be a metro station too, but this was cancelled, although new plans do include it.
