This church was built in the period 1270–1330. Here in the Middle Ages all city festivals took place, kings came here. The main attraction of the church is considered the huge bell Tuba Dei, which translates from Latin "Voice of God". It is the second largest bell in Poland after the Kraków "Sigismund". Legend has it that the bell was cast on 22 September 1500 by a local craftsman with donations from the townspeople. The height of the bell is 2 m, the circumference is 2.27 m, the mass is 7.3 tons. Another 200 kg weighs his tongue. An important feature of the Tuba Dei, which distinguishes it from its brethren, is that the bell is propelled by the feet.

The main church of the city, which first became a minor basilica and later a cathedral. It has been rebuilt four times, and its current appearance is that set in the fifteenth century in Baltic Gothic. Inside, although it is unknown where, is buried the heart of the King of Poland John Albert Jagiellon, who died in Toruńe here embalmed to be transported to the Wawel Cathedral in Krakow.

It is modestly hidden in an alley, so there are not many tourists. Actually, this church is the Cathedral of Torun. It is also the church where Copernicus was baptized.

It is so tall and majestic that the full view could only be seen from the other side of the Vistula River. In a nearby place, you can only look up at it. Like the old Chinese says: "仰之彌高 (The more you look up to it, the higher you feel)".

The interior is richly decorated with Rococo and Baroque art. Visitors can pay to climb up the monumental west tower.

An interesting cathedral, and it's the big one you can see from most of the old town. There is a clock on one facade that was for the raftsmen to see the time when they were on the river. The clock has only one hand, the so called digitus dei, which has a dent above the VIII numeral, allegedly from a Swedish cannon ball.

Inside the building the interior is ornate and worth a viewing and JP 2 visited here in 1999.

In May we visited the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist in Torun, Poland. It is one of the oldest churches in the area and it possesses a wealth of art objects. One of the largest churches in Poland, it took 200 years to be completed, from the 13th to 15th centuries. The noted polymath Nicolaus Copernicus was baptized in this church. When in Torun, a visit to this impressive house of worship is a must. The management of this architectural wonder has restrictive visiting hours, and we had to pay a small fee to enter and another fee to take photographs of the interior, but it is well worth it. Photographers will love this place.

Know ahead of time what to look for inside this medieval Gothic church, otherwise you might miss something important because there is so much to look at. When I entered the old church, I was just overwhelmed with all of the baroque altars visible from the nave, but placed in niches on the side walls. They seemed massive against the whitewashed walls - tall and wide - all gold, black with gilded decor, or even blue. They were decorated with a mix of statues, paintings, and sunbursts. Epitaphs and other commemorative plaques for noble families and notable citizens were also placed on these chapel walls. Each had a low fence in front of it. Each chapel also had at least 2 Gothic stained glass windows. Biblical scenes from the Bible were illustrated with strong colors and were just beautiful. These windows were still the originals as the city of Torun had not been damaged in WWII. However, I missed the Copernicus Chapel with its baptismal font and bust of Copernicus because my attention was elsewhere.

The front of the church, of course, should be the focus of any visit. In contrast to the white walls of the nave, these walls were red brick. My eye was drawn to the 1300 Gothic wood cross with a crucified Christ hanging over the 15th century triptych of St. Wolfgang with a beautiful stained glass window behind all. On either side of the window were very large paintings of the church's two patrons - St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist. However, the painting that got the most attention was the one hanging on a side wall beside the altar - the Crucifixion and Last Judgement. This medieval painting was large and it needed to be to illustrate the essential elements of Christianity. On the top was Peter with the keys to heaven who ushered good people in while St. Gabriel with his sword directed sinners to hell. On the bottom were painted the various punishments people suffered in hell. In the midst of the painting, was the crucified Christ with Mary and others at his feet.

The pulpit was really ornate and was placed at the front of the hall church. The white ceiling was vaulted with a repetitive subtle red and green design which also decorated the pointed arches.

The north entrance to this church faces the square. The churchis about 1 block from the Town Hall at the intersection of Zeglarska and Kopernicka streets. This red brick church is easily recognized by its single wide tower that has a one armed clock on the south side of the tower. Beside the clock there was evidence of cannon ball damage (missing bricks) from the 18th century Swedish siege.

There was no admission for the church, but there is a charge to climb the bell tower for city views and the chance to touch the bell's clapper which supposedly brings good luck. That bell - Tuba Dei- is one of the largest medieval bells in Poland.

We took 15 minutes for our pictures, but a visit could be much longer if a closer examination of all of the altars is done. This medieval church is the main church of the old town and should not be missed.

One of the three preserved medieval churches in Torun; all of them are worth seeing. Especially interesting are wall paintings from the 14th and 15th century - there's a creepy one high on the wall opposite the altar, supposedly unfinished and representing Jesus Christ. Very interesting trip in time.

The Church of St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist has served as a parish church, a Minor Basilica, and since 1992 as the Cathedral of the Toruń Diocese. This is a magnificent house of worship with a number of altars and works of art. Photography is permitted. Persons interested in history, religion, art, and architecture should enjoy visiting this church.

We were overcome by the history and gothic beauty of the cathedral. The baptismal font apparently was where Copernicus, one Torun's legendary sons, was baptized. And it was all free of charge.
