About
The Ethnographic Museum in Toruń came into being 1st January 1959. Its creatress and the first long-term manager was professor Maria Znamierowska-Prüfferowa, whom name, the museum has carried since 15th December 1999. The Ethnographic Museum in Torun is one out of three independent ethnographic museums in the country. It is the council institution of culture and it acts in the strength of museums act from the day 21st November 1996, and the Sejmik (the Sejm) of Kujawsko-Pomorskie Province is its organizer. The Museum is listed to the State Register of Museums.

The museum is in two parts. The outside where the various buildings are an inside where there are displays of items associated with life, work and religion of days gone by.
The location of the museum is easy to find being just outside the old town, Can't comment on entry price as we happened upon free museum entry day, bargain!
Didn't use an audio tour as we picked up an explanatory leaflet in English for the outdoor exhibits. The indoor displays are all in Polish but Google Translate on your phone does the job nicely so no problems in interpretation. Spent a good 2 hours here.

The core collection shows local village and small town life in the region in the 18th and early 19th centuries. A lovely collection of artefacts, well displayed and interestingly curated. Some fascinating old film clips. The audioguide in English is excellent. There is a very fine collection of old wooden farm houses and an enormous thatched barn which housed a special exhibition of embroidered wall hangings, unique to eastern Europe in the 19th and 20th centuries. Most were almost new but one lovely one of a fiddler had been patched and darned again and again, attributing to many years of loving use. What an enjoyable museum!

Nice park in the city with a museum and a set of houses moved from across norther Poland, and then preserved as a record of village life in the 18/19th Cents.
The museum has some nice bits - and an audio guide (with interesting translations)
If you are into ethnography you will like this - For the passing visitor it may be too detailed

This place has a great potential and could easily be a great day out for kids if it was run more like fun park rather than a museuem. A collection of reconstructed peasants' houses is hardly interesting for children unless they are given a chance to engage in some 'hands-on' activities (pottery, tool-making etc). The only exception was an opportunity to try walking on stilts.

If you want to see how the villages and cottages looked like a century ago this is the place to visit!
The houses are completely furnished just if they are still in use. There are many objects used in every day life and work.
The tour is guided, don't hesitate to ask a lot of questions!
It isn't just a museums but also a skansen!

I loved this place. It's right next to the old town and an utterly fascinating look at what daily life used to be like in Polish villages. Go into the houses and see the furniture, craftwork and kitchens. There is also an indoor museum which has a few diaramas.

The inside of the museum was a thoughtful collection of everyday items and tools of people who lived in the late XIX and early XX century. Enough nuggets of knowledge hidden in there to keep the tour interesting. However the real gem of the visit is the trip to the outside area and seeing preserved or reconstructed houses of the period. A very knowledgable employee gave us a run-down of the purpose of each building, and showed us the inside of the Mill. Awesome place

We only did the outside area but the audio tour was really interesting and we also had a guide showing us where to go and explains other things not on the audio tour.

You will need at least 2 hours for this one. Nearly as interesting as the Copernicus museum. Note the windmill and read how it works by having the capacity to be able to use the wind from its strongest direction ALL the time.

In this small open air museum you could feel how people of northern Poland lived in XIX century in rural areas. There are several households of rich and poor people, windmill, watermill... Museum is very close to historical centre and could be reached easily. I have been the only visitor there and could really enjoy fully.
