Poznan goats, goring every day at noon on the town hall tower, are the most famous tourist attraction. A clock with an unusual “comic element”, as it was called at that time, was installed in 1551 and present present mechanism dates from the end of the 20th century.
Legend is connected with the presence of the goats on the top of the building, saying that the goats run away to the tower from the town hall kitchen where they were to substitute deer haunch burned through inattention.
The fighting goats are a symbol of Poznań and surely it is worth seeing how at noon they are leaning out of the tower- prepare for a crowd during weekend and summer.

It is a nice tourist attraction. The daily appearance of the goats is one of Poznań's best-known tourist attractions. The mechanical goats' butting display is performed daily at noon, preceded by the striking of the clock and the playing of a traditional bugle call and are accompanied by numerous residents and tourists. This is the symbol of Poznan and it is in the beautiful town hall building in the Old Market Square.

In 1536, a fire broke out in Poznan destroying the Town Hall. It was a huge disaster for the city. In 1550, the city council hired the Italian architect John Baptist di Quadro to reconstruct and expend the Town Hall. The work on this expansion lasted until 1560. The clockmaker Bartholomew Wolff of Gubin made a clock, which had a 'foolish device; a pair of figures striking the bell'. The clock was installed in 1551. It was a very important decision for the city, because at that time only the richest city could afford such an expense.
According to legend, when the clock was ready, the town councilors decided to offer a sumptuous feast on the occasion. For the main course was to be served two roasted deers. The kitchen helper was to rotate the roasts on a spit, while the Chef was outside looking at the arriving guests. The careless helper fall asleep burning the roasting venison.
Desperate Chef sent the kitchen helper to bring new deers to roast, but all the meat stalls were closed. After a fruitless search, the boy noticed two white goats grazing. Without thinking, he brought two goats to the Town Hall. Goats feeling that the end is near, escaped and went up the stairs to the Town Hall tower. There, in front of the crowd gathered outside, began to strike bell with horns. The view so amused the governor, the city councilors and all the guests, that the watchmaker was asked to replace two figures striking bell by two goats butting each other. To commemorate this event, once a day, at noon and you can see two goats butt 12 times.

I have written a review of the Old Square in Poznan, which I consider one of the best of Europe, since it is very quiet, specially at
The reason is simple: there is an interesting mix of architectural styles: medieval, eclectically, renaissance, etc.
But most of the peaceful environments sets the tone, especially if you are concentrating to take new angles and shoots.! You will ALMOST never see crowds of people!!
The same goes for the former Town Hall. Apart from watching the goat at noon at the mechanical clock, my primer suggestions would be photography.
The tower, being built as early as the 13th century, served as official local government until World War II. I was not able to get in , as it was in renovation. But even the outdoors are perfect for Photography lovers. There are so many details that one can spend at least one day just shooting the outside architectural details, not mentioning the inside.
The Loggia are impressive, as their symmetry, the inscriptions in Latin on the facade of the building, the tower itself, the portraits of of the "old world" and recent Polish kings and rulers are also worth to focus on shooting.
Finally, the night decoration adds a new glamour to the building, for night shots!
I would consider a must for photography students ( and classic beauty lovers)

We live in Scotland now but part of our family comes from Poznan. Everytime we visit Poland we spend a few days (minimum :)) there and we always go to the Old Square to see the two funny goats. Our kids love them and we do, too! It's always a good excuse to go for a walk around the old town :)

Similar to the trumpet player in Krakow, Poznan has its Koziolki, little rams that butt heads. Simply put, it's a must see when in Poznan.

Visited on Tuesday 2nd October. Time your visit for when the clock strikes the hour and you will be rewarded with two goats appearing above the clock.

If you are in Poznan you must go and see Koziolki! They not massivly beautiful or entertaining but you can't miss it because it's a symbol of Poznan. My 3 year old wanted to go back and watch it again and again. There is something magical about watching Koziolki at midday on the beautiful Old Square Market!
