There is so much to see and enjoy on the historic ‘island’ of Ostrów Tumski. Poznań Cathedral (Bazylika Archikatedralna św. Apostołów Piotra i Pawła) is one of the oldest churches in Poland and the oldest Polish cathedral, dating from the 10th century. It is the most dramatic and historic feature on the island of Ostrów Tumski. The first church on this site dates from 966 AD and is associated with the birth of Poland. The current building style dates from the 14th and 15th centuries (restored in the 1950s after the 1945 fires that destroyed it). The cathedral is the place of burial of the following rulers: 992 Mieszko I, 1025 Boleslaus the Brave, 1034 Mieszko II, 1058 Casimir the Restorer, 1239 Ladislaus Odonic, 1257 Przemysł I, 1279 Bolesław Pobożny, and 1296 Przemysł II. Another feature building is the Church of Our Lady Most High (Kościół pw. NMP in Summo), a beautifully renovated late gothic church dating from 1431-47, that looks a little as if it is a full church cut in half. Look for a stone at the base of the building with distinctive grooves cut into it. The story goes that the grooves were made by knights as they sharpened their swords on the rock to give them supernatural power. Surrounding this church is a low glass installation showing a pattern of the archeological remains of the Palace and Chapel (965 AD) of Mieszko I and Dobrawa (Instalacja Palatium Mieszka I i Dobrawy). Mieszko I was the ruler of Poland from about 960 until his death in 992 AD, as well as the founder of the first, independent Polish state, the Duchy of Poland. He is buried in the Cathedral. Dobrawa was his wife, Dobravka of Bohemia, the Czech Přemyslid princess. But don’t stop at the Cathedral complex. Walk across the pedestrian and cycle bridge with its distinctive red arches and wander the picturesque streets of the village of Śródka (which was granted city rights in 1231). In the middle, you will find the Mural Śródka (2015) by Gerard Cofta, inspired by historical details and tales of the village. You may also find another unusual mural made of rain spouts and funnels and troughs. Apparently, it plays music when it rains. While in the village, stop to enjoy one of the many cafes or restaurants. I enjoyed a lovely, lazy weekend breakfast at Do Środka, overlooking the sun-drenched Śródka town square and mural.

It's about a 15 minute walk from the Old Market Square to Ostrow Tumski (Cathedral Island) with stops along the way to take photos of the Street Art l came across. A very peaceful place to visit and a break from tourist area of Stray Rynek which also offers so much of Poznan history. First thing you notice is Porta Posnania skywalk bridge between the exhibition buildings. Statue of John Paul ll, half built church of the Virgin Mary, cathedral of St. Peter and Paul, Archdiocese Museum.

Crossing over the Jordan Bridge (red) you can take a beautiful photo of the cathedral in the background from this point. A short walk on the righthand side you will come across "Green Symphony" street art. Further on lefthand side you will come across the stunning 3D the A Srodka Tale Mural which not to be missed. Srodka offers so many photo opportunities plus a place to have something to eat and drink.

We walked from the Rynek and it was a very enjoyable walk. Here you can find the cathedral which is really nice and if you go a bit further and cross another bridge you can find the best pirogy in Poznan in a tiny little restaurant Na Winklu. Then you can walk on the other side of the river back towards the city centre.

Ostrow Tumsky Island is the oldest part of Poznan, where in practice the city arose, but today it is a bit isolated from the most central and touristic area and in fact coming here means to immerse yourself in a decidedly more humble atmosphere. On the island you come mainly to visit the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul with the nearby Gothic church dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, however, once here, taking a short walk you can also discover other interested buildings and some modern urban art. If you have time, it's worth a ride.

"Cathedral island", dating back to the 10th century, boasts the cathedral and other religious buildings. It's quiet and quite separate from the rest of Poznan. I walked there as it's not a massive distance, but due to aching legs took the tram back.

Very relaxed and beautifull small area ? especially after the Town centre. on the Island but easy to get to by trams or even walking.
A nice number of coffee shops and sights worth seeing. Do you homeowork. Basically the origin and centre of Poland. Do the tour of its origins its cheap enough.

Ostrow Tumski (or Cathedral Island) was more than just the site for the Poznan Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul. It was also interesting to just explore the oldest part of Poznan, roam the village streets and view the various religious buildings. Worth a short stroll but visiting the Poznan Cathedral should be primary focus.

This is an old part of town but about 15 mins walk away from the main square. So in the sunshine it's a nice way to move away from the built up heart of Poznan. Very small and just over the river, the area consists of the cathedral and a few old small streets. However, it's worth just walking onto view Lake Malta from here before walking back into town.

Ostrow Tumski is actually on an island with several bridges that cross over the river. Lovely buildings, cathedral and museum, all well worth a visit.

Ostrow Tumski is a great little area of Poznan just across the River Warta that's such an historic part of this city ,in fact the city of Poznan originates from Ostrow Tumski .
The most defining feature of this area is obviously Poznan Cathedral ,one of the oldest religious buildings in Poznan ,it's a peaceful area ,some other nice religious buildings here and some cool looking old streets ,all in all it's a great area of the city to visit if you're planning a holiday to Poznan .
