Old Market Square is exactly where King Casimir III the Great founded Bydgoszcz in 1346 and is still a pillar of social life in the city, hosting concerts and public gatherings and fringed by outdoor seating for bars and restaurants.
An unsettling event took place here at the start of the II World War, when Bydgoszcz ‘s German residents and Poles were caught up in fighting.
The brutal resulted was the execution of 50 Polish citizens on the north side of the square- it was marked with a monument in 1969. The tenement houses around the square are from the 18th and 19th centuries and between the dining establishments are some family-run shops selling antiques and handicrafts.

The Old Market Square - Stary Rynek is the centrepiece of the Old Town in Bydgoszcz. It dates back to 1346 and has been completely renovated in recent times. The square is surrounded by a variety of interesting buildings old and new in differing architectural styles and has a great deal of charm. We often visited Stary Rynek during our extended break and it was often busy with people using the bars and restaurants or just chilling out. It is a great place to visit while in Bydgoszcz.

Market square in Bydgoszcz is part of the old town, which in turn is part of location town - this is where Bydgoszcz was established in mid 14th century, although human settlements existed here long before official location documents. Market square was located on sort of island, surrounded by Brda river or moats - still supplied with water from Brda. Some parts of those water systems exist till today. Most of building around market square were built up to 18th century. The square as we know it finnally gained its shape in first months of WWII, when German invaders decided to destroy the whole west side of the market, including jesuit church. Todays west side is in the shape of former Jesuit college, which for quite some time was used as a town hall. The biggest dominant on the market is Monument to Struggle and Martyrdom in Bydgoszcz (Pomnik Walki i Meczenstwa Ziemi Bydgoskiej), a place of petriotic events. Right beside it, since last refurbishement of the market, a highlighted line marks a course of meridian 18. Many restaurants and some posh shops in town houses around, but that's just like in every other city. Surprisingly nice place.

Nice place for a walk - some old tenement houses, town hall, Monument to the struggle and martyrdom of the Bydgoszcz Region, unusual clock with Bydgoszcz time. Meeting place for many citizens. Some cafes and restaurants also located there.

Love the Old Market Square. It comes to life in the evenings, and during the daytime watch out for the pigeons as there are thousands of them.

The architecture of the buildings surrounding the square is really interesting and it is worth browsing around the square. The Tourist Information office also fronts onto the square and the staff there are really helpful if there is anything you need to know.

A very neat, attractive, colourful town square with a reasonable selection of bars and restaurants. Ideal to sit and spend a while watching the world go by. A reasonable selection of shops both on the square and neighbouring streets make a change from the pottery outlets around town

The market square is a nice place to eat, however Bydgoszcz is a pleasant enough place to visit if you are there on business but not as nice as other cities in Poland, such as Torun, Poznan, Warsaw, Krakow.

The old town with its town square is definitely the best part of Bydgoszcz. Lots of quaint little shops and cafes, narrow streets, museums. Interesting monument with a very sad history which should be seen and learnt about.

Probably under utilized.
This is a lovely square with lots of great history - except what happened here during the war years rip - and an opportunity from almost any cafe or bar to people watch or sit back and enjoy the tranquility!

Whether it's during the festival in August or February, the market square is lovely. There are several restaurants in the area that are quite delicious and very cheap. The buildings themselves are beautiful and worth a stroll.
