We never thought Bydgoszcz has such a nice old town, well, we never thought Bydgszcz has an old town at all, we rather associated this city with post-industrial landscape. It turns out the old town, called sometimes as location town, has a lot to offer, in terms of heritage buidings, museums, and great landscapes along the water system, which is build around Brda river. Obviously the market square, with huge Monument to Struggle and Martyrdom in Bydgoszcz (Pomnik Walki i Meczenstwa Ziemi Bydgoskiej) is the centre of it all, but I would strongly recommend a visit to Wyspa Młyńska (Mill's Island) in first place, as it seems to be the top spot, especially for live outdoor events. Many old building were refurbished recently, so it all lookes very nice indeed.

Bydgoszcz Old Town is a charming part of the city and on first impressions seems relatively small but actually covers quite a wide expanse including the areas around the Old Market Square and Brda River. The most notable sights are the St Martin and St Nicholas Cathedral and the Old Granaries as well as other attractions to be seen. The Old Town is a must see whilst in Bydgoszcz and is worth exploring to discover it's highlights.

London Pub
It was quiet when I was in here (around 8pm on a Friday evening) but the people who were there were friendly and the guy behind the bar was excellent and very helpful. I wish I had of gone back but I got distracted elsewhere.

PRL
I have been in a few of these PRL Bars and I actually liked this, the Communism ornaments and bric-a-brac were fun but maybe a little kitsch. The staff could really do with brightening up though and well worth a visit but there are certainly more entertaining places to spend an evening.

Jacks
Chaos reigns in this surreal behemoth. Wonder around the place in a daze of awe at the decoration and the crowds. Don’t worry about getting lost as you will never know where you are in here anyway. How nobody ended up in the swimming pool is anybody’s guess but drinking, dancing and chatting made for an fantastic night.

Soap Museum
Probably not the place to be for 10 boozy lads but well worth a visit for half an hour – it is a lot of fun (even for us two late 40 something blokes). The tour is very interesting and you get to make some soap! The young lady who showed us around spoke impeccable English and was an excellent guide.

Katarynka
A more up market crowd on the Saturday evening we were there enjoying excellent food and service – you should try this place.

Zapiecem
We ate here on the Sunday evening and it was amazing. With bread and duck fat to snack on, soup to start with followed by a plate of Pierogi we couldn’t manage to finish our main courses. Wonderful service and excellent food, I thoroughly recommend eating here.

Zalpalka Café
Pretty girls serving fantastic coffee, superb cakes and sandwiches (the owner was very nice too, just not so pretty!) I wish I could have my breakfast here every day. We lost the key to our apartment so we went here to decide what to do and the staff were very kind and very helpful in calling the apartment owner and helping us to sort it out.

Soda Club
Friendly staff but quite upmarket and a bit portentous, probably a great place to take a date.

I have already assessed the market itself. I understand that this point is intended to be an opinion about the entire old city. If the market square is almost renovated, some parts of the Old Town are not yet or are in the process of being renovated. So it's quite uneven there. I guess it's an average rating, neither negative nor positive. There are interesting historical places there, but they need to "shine" and they don't do that yet.

2 hours drive to the south of Gdansk - the northern port city, takes you to Bydgoszcz. The quiet city with its picturesque city square and the scenic Brda river flowing by makes Bydgoszcz a must- visit place. The city centre has a lovely Opera House, sprawling garden, and an ancient church. Go around the city square at night time walk by the river Brda, and stand on the bridge soaking in the quietude. Far from the hustle of the major cities, this lovely place must be explored by everyone.

I stayed in Bydgoszcz for 10 days, and I didn't even know what to expect before getting there. It turned out a great vacation. Old city is clean, tidy, with a lots of bars and restaurants, the river bank and parks are beautiful to walk around or just sit and relax. It felt cosy, safe, and like I can live there longer :)

On our first day In Bydgoszcz we went to the information center which is on the old square. Got a guidebook and did that 2 1/2 hour walking tour around the city center area: on the island, along the canal, up-and-down various streets and alleys. Bydgoszcz has a lot of history in the old town and a lot of statues and things to see and learn about it's definitely worth taking the time and walking around the old city sites.

The Old town is the oldest, very beautiful and attractive part of this interesting city of Bydgoszcz. It has a very friendly, inviting atmosphere. You enter the old city via historic bridge over the Brda river. You can also arrive on a water taxi in season. Do not miss the balancing statue on the rope “Man Crossing the River”, a tightrope walker above Brda river . It will be on your left . See the granaries, the model of the city, local museum. On your right you will see the beautiful cathedral and the island on Brda river. Mostowa Street is lined up with great restaurants and cafes. Parallel to it is Jatki street. Jazz club, night club, nice area to stroll. At night there is a lot of lovely illumination. Mostowa leads to Old Square, again with cafes and attractions. The Old Square suffered during the Second World War and lost Bydgoszcz city hall and historic Jesuit Church. Today there is a Monument to Struggle and Martyrdom on the square. You can also see the back of the Old Jesuit Collegium. From Old Square one can head either to explore Dluga street and the city walls or to the Mill Island called in the past the Bydgoszcz Venice due to being built on water of one of the branches of Brda.
There is a self guided walking tour of the Old Town on line. You can also stop at the tourist information on the Old Square and Niedzwiedzia and pick up some free maps and information.

We visited in February 2018, and managed to pick the coldest week of the year. It was freezing walking round and trying to sightsee, but worth doing anyway.

Bydgoszcz is a beautiful town and there are lots of places to see and it is well worth a visit (but I would suggest going in the spring or summer). There are lots of walks to take through the old town with lots to see and do. The summer promises to have many more attractions open (such as river cruises etc).

A lot of places are closed over the weekend (shops tend to close mid afternoon on Saturday and all day Sunday, and some tourist attractions are also closed). If you are planning a short break in the winter I would suggest going mid-week rather than weekend.

There are lots of restaurants, cafes and bars available and many people in tourist areas speak English. We will definitely be going back - but in the summer!
