This is one of the most engaging walks in Bydgoszcz. The canal itself was in active use until the 1910's. It hasn't been used since as a waterway. It was built in the last quarter of the eighteenth century as part of a network of canals and rivers linking Bydgoszcz to as far afield as Berlin. Starting from The Grunwaldska Roundabout, and walking so to speak upstream from there, it can appear a little unexciting at first, with it being little more than a narrow channel surrounded by high concrete embankment walls. But persevere, and you will be blessed with one of the most lovely walks in Bydgoszcz. The canal widens into more expansive waters which are sometimes tranquil, sometimes active as with the locks or the fountains. On both sides of the canal parkland stretches out. Stay by the canal and keep walking alongside its banks. Some people fish, others cycle along the park's paths; others pass the time of day sitting on park benches and watching the world go by. Lovers stroll or dally in the surroundings. At times you feel you are in a forest and the water reflects the trees around it. Just the sort of thing if you want a scenic walk on a lazy afternoon. This is not a place if you're in a hurry to see as many sights as possible, this is a place to relax.

During the heoight of the industrial revolution in Europe, (mid-19th century) all industries were powered by water or steam. Those industries that used steam needed coal to heat the water. The river network in Poland carried the bulk of the coal form the south to the north and west. The people of Bydgoszcz built the Channel, sluice and locks to accommodate the change in geography of the Vistula River so coal barges could traverse from Poland to Germany. The lock system works in both directions from the Vistula into the Bryda Coal Canal. The locks are still in use today and can be seen in operation.

To make it more complicated for the outsider there is Old Bydgoszcz Canal and the New Bydgoszcz Canal. The whole system of canals is a gateway between Western and Eastern Europe. Most of Old Canal disappeared after the controversial decision during the Socialist Era to fill it in. But there is still plenty of canal system left. It is fascinating for children who usually love to see the old locks and the difference in water levels. Along the canal there are places to rest, parks with benches, hiking trails and places to fish. Like before the Second World War there are again restaurants and cafes along the canal. Obtain a map from the tourist information on Old Square and go for a long relaxing walk. With your camera!

Very nice place to go and take some pictures if the weather is fine. The underwater weeds have a beautiful emerald colour on fine days, very nice :).

The canal was near my hotel, so decided to tale a look. Lovely peaceful place for a walk or a sit down away from the centre.

I recommend this place for a slow walk or your personal training. Jogging, bike riding or other fitness activities. One thing to have on mind is to be wary of mosquitoes that can get annoying.

Good for a walk and quite interesting things to see along it.
You can see a lot of money has been spent on this area with a good bit of history to take in along the way.
