A 600 m climb so take sturdy walking shoes. There are some pubs around but we took a packed lunch and some nice tables and benches to eat from halfway down.
Given to the German knight Schoff Gotsch by a German Princess, who was also the founder of the Schaffgotsch dynasty who owned the beautiful palace in Cieplice. They eventually had to leave Poland in 1945 after being kicked out by the Communists.
The castle was never seized but was abandoned after being hit by lightening. There are some very impressive views from the very top and the whipping post in the main square is interesting.

An amazing journey through a dense, old forest; picturesque landscapes. The journey can be quite exhausting for some depending on the route. The culmination is the wonderful ruins of the Castle and amazing views from the top. I recommend it to anyone traveling with a child.

I visited castle with my daughter today and I need to say it’s the best attraction in an area. Red trail was easy to climb up with plenty of places to rest. Castle itself very well kept and full of beautiful views, you can even have a nice drink and food in castle tavern. I would definitely recommend it if you are visiting Karkonosze Mountains.

I have been wanting to visit Zamek Chonnik since last year when I passed through Jelenia Gora. I didn't have time last year, and I made it a point to come back this year. Even in winter, this was a great outing. It may have been even better because of the cold! It made the stop in the schronisko on the grounds even more delightful.
If you are traveling only by public transport, this is a great place to go as the connections are very good. I started from the Dworzec Glowny in Jelenia Gora and took the 15 Bus to Pod Chojinkem. I actually wouldn't recommend this stop, but instead get off the bus at the "Czecha" stop and follow your trail map to the black and red trails. It's a short way around the corner.
From there, as others have noted, there is an entrance fee into the National Park. It was about 6zl I think. I used the red trail on the basis of others' reviews because I didn't want to overdo myself going up. And this was a good decision. The red trail has been "recently" renovated, and it is in excellent shape and designed for large numbers of people hiking to the top. On the way down, I decided to try the black trail, and it was a little bit of a workout coming down. I imagine going up this way will be better for more experienced hikers and those who are generally more athletic than I am .
At the top, you pay your 6zl entrance fee, and you're free to explore. I have a sense that there is more going on during the summer, but I really liked the quiet of a winter visit. The experience is really fun, especially when there aren't throngs of people fighting you up the spiral staircases. I'm sure there are fantastic views when you get to the top, but it was snowing when I got there so all I saw was white.
Make sure to stop in next door at the schronisko and grab something warm to drink. The inside is quite enchanting with a fire going and tasty tomato soup to fill your belly. There are some postcards to buy, but I didn't see any of the other souvenirs that were advertised. I think they were closed. OH, and make sure that you get your stamp inside too. I was happy to be able to add another stamp to my collection.
If the weather had been better, and I had more daylight hours to spend outside, I would definitely have explored the area a little more. I would like to check out the yellow and green trails. This is a great place to stop on a long hike - easy to plan a stop here. But it's also great for an afternoon outing with the family too. I saw a few couples with children making their way to the top too.
Well worth the 12zl cost... I highly recommend it for others!!

We were there on a sunny autumn day in October and it was brilliant. The hike up is a bit tough, but since the age span was from 6 to 70 we took our time.
Unless you are in really good condition I recommend taking the red route up, and if you are in ok/good condition take the black down. If you have a bit problems with balance or similar stay away from the black route! The red one is nicely paved and in good condition. The castle itself is OK, but not something extraordinary. If you decide to go up to the tower to enjoy the beatiful view from the top, beware that the way down on the spiral staircase is not for people with claustrofobia.
I can truely recommend visiting Chojnik

This picturesque castle has been in ruins since it was struck by lightning in 1675. It possible to walk around the walls and to climb up the reconstructed tower for magnificent views of the surrounding area. There are well-signed parking lots from which it takes around 30-60 minutes to hike up to the castle.

This is a very nice walk to do. The black way is better oi go up then to go down and require some sport. But the landscapes are beautiful.
So use the red one on your way back and the black to go up
The castle is also nice but mot much to do. The view is nevertheless beautiful and given the cost a must do.
I recommend to do if u like nature

Before you go, check the website to see when the last entry is. We were in Jelenia Góra for a long weekend, and missed going the first day because the last entry was before 4 pm. The next day, we were there when it opened at 10 am. Parking was 8 zlotys and the entrance to the park was similar.
We took the red trail, which I guess was medium difficulty. If you've got kids, I'd recommend red or green. The black trail looks normal enough at first, but there is a long, steep section that is all slippery rocks you need to climb. We came down that way and it was treacherous. There are some beautiful views on that trail, but definitely wear good shoes if you go on it. I saw a lady in sandals who was doing it, but she didn't look happy.
I recommend starting when the park opens (check website for times bc the times change throughout the year) because it gets more and more crowded throughout the day.
Exploring the castle ruins is another cost, but it's worth it. There are some great views, cool staircases to explore, and a fantastic panorama from the top tower. There's also a gift shop and cafe, with food and drinks. There is a bathroom too, which is good bc there aren't any on the trail. So make sure everyone goes before the hike, and bring plenty of water.
This was well worth the small price. We spent about an hour climbing up, another hour or so exploring the ruins, and then 35-40 mins climbing back down.

This is one of the nicest places near Jelenia Góra. It's so picturesque and only an hour walk from Sobieszów (district of Jelenia). A lot of people come here to paint or just admire the ruins of Schaffgotsch's castle. You have to pay for entry but it's only 5 PLN for adults. The best view is from a tower. Each season you have different and spellbinding panorama.

Do zamku prowadzi droga dojazdowa zbudowana z kamieni, trudno jednoznacznie odpowiedzieć na to pytanie - zależne to jest od rodzaju kółek wózka i determinacji (podjazd jest stromy).

From the castle you can see another castle (or some building) on a higher mountain to the southwest (I think). Does anyone know what that building is? I can't figure it out.
Written May 19, 2018
Is there somewhere you can see the castle without having climb the trails? I have an elderly person with me who sadly cannot do the kind of walking required to reach it :(
