About
The Ethnographic Museum, Department of the District Museum in Tarnów, has been functioning in its present seat since 1984. This is a classical and historical manor house with old garden and two-floor granary built at the end of the 18th century. The beginnings of the Museum’s operations were based on a small ethnographic collection which currently consists of more than 5,000 items. Among them, the most prominent ones are the exhibits that characterise the traditional folk culture of the Tarnów region. Apart from the exhibits mentioned above, the Museum collects items connected with the life and culture of the Romani. In 1990, the first in the world permanent exhibition devoted to the subject of the Romani was opened here. In the Museum’s yard, there is also a seasonal field exhibition installed called “The Gypsy Caravan”.

Stayed in Tarnow for a while so wanted to visit this museum, only to find it is closed now for an indefinite period whilst undergoing renovation. So will have to try again next visit. June 2919.

It is one of the very few museums about gypsy culture. In fact I don't know if there are other ones. It is of interest but you have seen it in 45 min.

This isn't just any old dusty provincial ethnographic museum with the uniform display of agricultural tools and local dress. It holds the finest exhibition on gypsy culture I've ever seen, with clear information in both Polish and English on the origins of the gypsies/Roma people, their history, culture and way of life. The exhibition clearly has not been updated for some time but the quality of the materials and the way the subject matter is so well communicated (intelligent texts, good selection of maps and photos, not too much information, just enough) and the compelling topic make this exhibition worth taking time to visit. You only need an hour but you come out feeling that you have learnt something of a people and culture that are too little understood.
