The Ark of the Lord has an extraordinary 60 + year history of its founding by the steelworker residents of Nowa Huta (New Steel Plant) starting in 1960. Communist authorities, at the time of their approval of a new church, required it not look like a typical Catholic Church. The architect designed and made reference to the biblical Noah's Ark. It was built by hand by the local steelworkers who also made significant contributions to its construction. One must visit th o personally appreciate its design, construction and use for the community

Somewhat out from the historic centre of Krakow, but very well worth visiting if you are exploring the communist era "ideal workman" town of Nowa Huta. The church was build in 1976, after the later pope John Paul II got permission for its construction, in the otherwise devoid of religious buildings town. It is thus a modern, and quite large church, but has a nice atmosphere inside.

This church is also known with the name "the Arch". This church is one of the most imposing churches I've ever seen. The space is very open. In the middle of the church hall, there is a vast crucifix in a bowed position, looking upwards, towards the windows by the ceiling, towards the light. The floor consists of stones with different sizes; the small stones form like paths or narrow streams towards the altar. The ceiling is constructed of wooden shingles creating an impression of an arch. Underneath the church hall, there is a chapel. This church is a MUST, if you visit Cracow.
