Impressive monument located in the central square of the Point of Sale, right in front of the characteristic Palazzo dei Tessuti. The work is dedicated to the Romantic poet Adam Mickiewicz, whose bronze statue towers above the high marble base. Leaning against the base are four other sculptures, allegorical figures of arts and virtues. The original work dates back to the late nineteenth century, what you see today is the result of restoration carried out after the damage suffered during the Second World War. A monument that can hardly fail to be noticed even if often surrounded by people.

This grand almost theatrical statue of Polish poet Mickiewicz is perhaps more telling about the period it was made, than about the poet himself. Dating from 1898, a time when Krakow was ruled by the Austro-Habsburg authorities who allowed the region a kind of semi-autonomy, the monument shows Mickiewicz high on a pedestal flanked by allegorical figures symbolizing motherland, science, courage and poetry. During his lifetime (1798 - 1855) Mickiewicz supported armed uprising against the three imperial powers that partitioned Poland, but any reference to militant action against the invaders is absent from the representation. A statue of Mickiewicz was perhaps more acceptable to the Austrian rulers, than for instance one of Kościuszko who called for insurrection from this very square. A square in a city Mickiewicz never visited during his life time.

This striking memorial for Adam Mickiewicz, the greatest Polish poet of the Romanticism period was unveiled on 16 June 1898.

The best-known monument in Krakow is a favorite meeting point in the Main Market Square and is also a subject of various celebrations. On our visit, there was a demonstration for Ukraine in front of the monument.

The monument shows Adam Mickiewicz standing on a pedestal. Sitting at his feet are four allegorical figures symbolizing Homeland, Science, Courage, and Poetry.

Monument to the poet Adam Mickiewicz in Kraków's central square. It's in a square that attracts tourists, so it's a sight to behold. Together with the Textile Hall and St. Mary's Church, it forms part of the square's scene.

This is located in the heart of the Old Town central square. Impossible to miss, although most people are likely just to walk past and look. Adam Mickiewicz was a prominent Polish poet. Definitely worth a stop when exploring the area. Wherever you are in the world, there will normally be some sort of central square with a monument dedicated to a famous or well-known individual.

Adam Mickiewicz 1798 - 1855 - poet, essayist, and among others political activist (this last part leading to his exile from Poland). He is regarded as a national poet of Poland (but also, strangely, he is regarded as national poet in Lithuania and Belarus too - this is due to his origins).
In the Main Market Square in the Old Town of Krakow one shall find his monument - although is a reconstruction since the original monument was destroyed by the Germans during the occupation of Krakow in WWII.
Overall impressive bronze statue, you can not miss it when you are walking in the main square of Krakow ... definitely worthy of some minutes of your time and 1-2 pictures.

The monument of one of Poland most famous poets, is now a great place to snap a pic or just like a meet up place. It become an Icon because is in the middle of the Main Market Square in Old Town. The monument itself is very nice, and well illuminated at night. If you go to the Main Square you won't miss it.

Located in the central square in Old Town, this a monument you'll easily see when passing through. Ok for snapping for a picture, but otherwise you can keep moving.

Often these massive monuments are for kings or warlords - but here it is a poet!
None less than what is considered to be the national poet of Poland - and some other countries as borders have changed. He lived from 1798 to 1855; and was both poet, author, political activist amongst other things. So there is a bit of political history in it of course.

The statue displays the poet standing at the top - hands in his pockets. The base consists of allegories symbolizing the Motherland, Science, Poetry and Courage. All topics related to his destiny and life.

The monument was destroyed during WWII when the square also took the unfortunate name of the invading leader; when they left it was rebuilt with some original remains found in Hamburg. Other remains of the original statue can still be seen at the Schindler Factory Museum.

Interestingly the man never visited Krakow himself; he died in Paris - was brought back to be buried here - and got his memorial. Today it is a meeting point for protests against all violence and injustice in the world.

As every statue in a European city center, Adam Mickiewicz Monument passively but permanently struggles with birds dropping.
