Bird Cycling Service offers an extremely nice itinerary in southeastern Poland. The bikes we received were top-quality and in good repair. The maps were good and the GPS links were helpful. The countryside is beautiful and the overnights were all good, although some were better than others. My only disappointment was that we weren't warned about how few services we would find on the route, especially on Sunday but we managed and now look back on it as part of the overall adventure. Very family friendly

We recently returned from our second self guided tour with Bird PL. Two years ago we took their tour in the Czech Republic. The most recent tour was in Galicia, in Poland near the border with the Ukraine. Both tours were in late September. We took the second tour because we enjoyed the first one so much and were not disappointed.
We enjoyed the second tour more, because the countryside was so lovely and peaceful. The food and lodging were simpler than in the Czech Republic, but that was part of the charm. Everything was well organized, and the execution was flawless.
A word should be said about self guided tours. I wouldn't do it any other way, because I like to travel at my own pace. Since I turned 73 during the latest tour, that pace is not always rapid, although I had no problem making each days distance. My experience with self guided tours ( and I have taken a few) is that you will will at some time, or times, get off the track; but since you are on a bicycle, how far off can you get before realizing that you missed a turn somewhere. You need a sense of humor and patience. Bringing a compass is also a good idea.
Language was rarely an issue. There are many ways to communicate, and the people you encounter are all eager to help.
The bikes were sturdy and well prepared, certainly better than the ones I have at home.
The main reason for taking the second tour with Bird Pl, and for taking more in the future, was the care that the company took of us. The people in the company that we interacted with couldn't have been more helpful.
I wholeheartedly recommend any of the Bird tours.

We are a group of leisure cyclists from the UK and this was our 5th trip organised by Bird Service, a small friendly company based in Krakow. Each time we have chosen a different route - the latest was the Krakow to Warsaw tour along the Pilica river.
The organisation has always been first class. The hotels are good, sometimes superb, but are always conveniently sited on the cycle route. The food in the hotels is superb - wholesome, plentiful three course evening meals and large breakfasts. The minibus transfers are always on time and comfortable. The paper maps provided are easy to follow and you can request the gpx versions by email in advance of the tour if required. The bikes are well maintained, standard trail bikes, more than adequate for the terrain. On your first morning their minibus takes you to their bike store where their mechanic helps you set up your bike. Maciej Zimowski, the owner of Bird Service is there to greet you and is always so welcoming and takes great pride in his company. He is so enthusiastic about cycling in Poland and the nearby countries. The routes are all devised by him and he has taken ownership of the routes explaining the different parts of the route before departure. The prices charged are very reasonable compared with the large impersonal companies. You will not be disappointed if you book with Bird Service. We haven't and we will be back next year to try another of Bird's tours.

The tour with Maciej Bird. Pl was excellent. We had a pair of good tour bicycles panniers and racks. Before we even got to Krakow we had the navigation gpx files uploaded to our gps and tested. Out hotel service in krakow was just perfect and as promised the next morning we were shuttled to Bird’s warehouse to get all our gear. We had a mechanic to set up the bicycles to our liking and a van to get us to our first riding destination. The driver stayed with us at trailhead until we took off. The roads and trails were perfectly quiet and we had enjoyed the scenery very much. Our hotels were spa (zdroj) hotels a very good ending to a ride day. In towns getting into the hotel was clearly marked by the navigation files we had previously received. In our last day the driver was very punctual so we got back to our next destination on time. All in all a very good positive experience and we will try to come back again for a Mazuria’s lakes district bicycles tour with this company. Very well done thank you.

I can understand the earlier comment from Liene L on this holiday. We did it self-guided, Maciej, the owner of Bird Service was certainly quite chaotic in his organisation. But to his credit all the hotels were expecting us and the luggage was transported on time. As regards the holiday this does roughly follow the course of the Pilica but at no time do you cycle alongside the river. It is more a journey through rural Poland, much of which has not changed much in 50 years. We found it interesting simply to see rural Poland but if you are looking to go sightseeing memorable locations there is really not a lot.
The hotels we stayed at were fine. If you choose to do this holiday self-guided you really need to be good at map reading. I also plotted the route on Viewranger downloading Open Cycle Map. My advice would be to travel this route with someone who can speak at least some Polish - all the English speaking young people have now emigrated to other parts of Europe!

Disappointed with our guide, Maciej, whose organizational skills are questionable. The bikes kept breaking down causing delays. Some of the roads were so sandy that we had to push our bikes. There were no washrooms at many of the stops so the women had to pee in the bushes. Our guide was not attentive to the cycling ability of some of the participants and went too fast at times. The best part of the tour was the hotels we stayed in and the meals were delicious. The only meal that I could not eat was on the final night. Liver! Yuck!

A group of us recently took a couple bike tours in Poland with a company based in Krakow called Bird Bike Tours (www.bird.pl). Both trips were great and relatively inexpensive (around $100 PP per day including bikes, luggage transfers, route maps, hotels, breakfasts and dinners). While the route maps and directions could have been written more clearly for English speaking Americans, they were adequate. The scenery, people and food were fantastic. Krakow is a great city with lot's of character.

I've just returned from completing a self-guided Krakow to Warsaw bike trip organised by bird.pl. The maps and documents were excellent and the trip itself extremely well organised. We had no problems from start to finish. The bikes are sturdy and well maintained. The accommodation varied from 3 to 4 stars and was always spotlessly clean. Food varied from good to excellent; even our vegetarian was happy. Lots of opportunities for river swimming/bathing.

We did 2 consecutive week tours Warsaw to Krakow reverse of usual and Tatras to Budapest. The accomodation and food surpassed my expectations ie excellent.
The arrangements for transferring luggage and people were trouble free.
The maps were very detailed and included specific photos of some intersections.
It was obvious that Maciej had done lots of research.
He is quite excitable but most welcoming and generous including extra wine and meals. His English is excellent.
We found the riding and routes interesting and not too hard.
The negative comments by a Canadian woman show that this was probably the wrong sort of holiday for her.
You need basic map reading skills since it is self guided and my wife is used to squatting in the bushes to wee.
Occasionally pushing bikes through sand did not worry us.
Rural Eastern Europe is not really a consumer society so there arent many shops or places to drink coffee so you need to make some lunch at the huge breakfast buffets before you leave in the morning.
The bikes are heavy and uninspiring but included in the price and reliable and have good tyres so we had no punctures .
I would bring my own in future even though the airlines can be discouraging..

We were excited to go for a bike ride in the Czech and Polish countryside, but ended up looping around village roads for hours on end searching for what should have been a short route to the next location. The instructions were inadequate and unclear, complete with spelling errors to boot. We were dropped off at a supermarket in a village in Czech Republic and had to make our way from there to Olomouc village. The only way we ended up there eventually was a combination of luck and the help of a random local person who also just happened to be searching for the same village. The hotel we arrived at after our long day was right next to the train tracks. The window of the room actually looked out at trains. We’d informed our guide that we wanted to switch hotels after we first learned this but he said that would be “impossible”.
We felt abandoned by our guide in a country where we didn’t speak the language, and were afraid it would get dark before we found our elusive destination. One of our party was beginning to show signs of heat stroke as well. We finally arrived at the hotel where we were supposed to spend the night; it took six hours to go about 25 kilometres.
We informed our guide that we’d be cutting the trip short and he never replied. A week later, we still have not heard from him and don’t expect that we ever will.

I am interested in the 2020 Ukraine and Belarus cycling guided trips. How soon before the ride did you have to pay? Was it in instalments? How difficult is it to pay from a foreign country, namely Australia? Or is credit card the easiest way?
Thanks
Chris
