We attended this short, one hour concert of chamber music, performed by the four member Royal Chamber Orchestra, in small, domed, 11th century St. Adalbert’s church, the oldest church in Krakow, sited on Market Square in Old Town. The Orchestra performed a fast-paced and eclectic program of classical pieces, numbers from film scores, and popular works that featured a fair amount of improvisation by their first violin, Kamil Skicki. While their brochure touted the unique acoustics of this small domed church, it was the musicianship, particularly of their first violinist, Kamil Skicki, the was far and away the center of our attention.

While not a classical music aficionado or leaned critic, I’ve heard a fair amount of classical music over the decades, and seen close ups of famous violinist’s technique. Fortunately, we were in the first row, and were a few feet from Mr. Skicki and able to closely observe his fingering, and I must say that in terms of his expression, clarity of tone, unerring pitch, and the lightning quickness and dexterity of his fingering, and his skill at improvisation, his performance was a dazzling and very impressive tour de force, very ably supported by the other members of the ensemble.

Unfortunately due to the time of year this String Quartet wasn’t being held in the small church in Krakow Square due to the temperature. They were relocated to a small building / room a short walk away (5mins). Still off of the square.
I have never seen a string quartet before as I didn’t think it would be my sort of thing. But I couldn’t be more wrong. The hour performance was fantastic. They played a mixture of classical music and music from well know movies.
We went on Saturday as the Friday evening performance didn’t go ahead. We were do impressed we wanted to see them perform a different set on Sunday but didn’t get back in time from a prebooked tour.
My wife thoroughly enjoyed it and it was amazing value for money.
Please don’t miss this you won’t be disappointed.
We saw a bigger more expensive performance on Sunday and we both preferred this one.

Where do I start with this one? Here's a few words to start me off. Exquisite, talented, sublime, moving, intimate, romantic, amazing! For 65 plz you get to see talented musicians at the top of their game, demonstrating their beautiful craft which will have taken them years and years to perfect. The acoustics were wonderful and the crowd were stunned with their absolute brilliance. The number one violinist added humour toward the end with an individual solo which included playing the violin like a guitar with palm muting a la Ed Sheeran!! Insanely talented! This should be up there with the main square as the attraction not to be missed. We even got a free glass of wine after the performance for a local restaurant. What a way to spend the evening of our 10 year wedding anniversary!

This was totally amazing. Although I don't know much about classical music we went and what an amazing performance. The Church is beautiful as was the music we heard, stunning.

We got seats two rows back on the left so had a good view of the front two musicians.
Might even go again before the end of the holiday.

Not to be missed.

We were a group from UK. We had booked in advance.
The program of too many varied popular pieces were all played at break neck speed.
We were treated to a long, tuneless, improvised solo from the 1st violin which was really painful to listen to.
If you like good music give this 'chamber orchestra ' a miss.
The church is nice though.

The place was advertised as 'royal chamber', in fact this is just a small room, kind of like soviet music class from my childhood, some old guy in casual clothes meeting you outside, music was not announced, some times they would play badly(false notes) and if i can hear it without any music hearing, it must have been really bad. One of the players was in dirty shirt. This is pathetic, i feel cheated and ripped off. The only thing that was on par with what was advertised, was, obviously, the price - higher, actually than the price for Nutcracker ballet in krakow opera, and comparing this to krakow opera is like comparing bicycle to Boeing747

For the lover of classical and classic music this is absolutely not to be missed. For me, as for many, it is one of the true highlights - maybe THE true high point of a visit to Kraków - a city with dozens of highlights. The music is performed by a string quartet of superbly talented young musicians. The venue of St. Adalbert Church is perfect - beautiful and amazing in itself, with excellent acoustics and, seating only an audience of 30 or so, the sight lines are great and the sound is magnificent.
They play one of two set programs each concert featuring Bach, Vivaldi, Mozart, Schubert, Chopin, Brahms and much more. It is a fantastic experience for the audience.
But be ready . . . I have now seen the Royal Chamber Orchestra perform in 5 concerts there -!hearing both set programs more than once - and, while I enjoyed them all, none of them were the same. The performers are not always the same 4 musicians and the performance they deliver varies too. I have heard them play the pieces as written by the composers and play with pace, passion, and superb skill. Wonderful. I have also heard them deliver the performance with lots of variations and improvisations on the theme of the piece they are performing, and while I loved that display of creativity and talent, it may not be what someone else came to hear. The lead violin player seems to call the tune as to these variations, or lack of them. While all the players are highly skilled and gifted musicians, one of the lead violinists has skills of such an advanced level that he takes off and creates "new" material with variations of pace, of composition and of style that take a classical or classic piece and make it blues, a funk, a jazz or a ? tune that is amazing to see and hear, but may not be what all the audience came to experience. Some have commented that they are rushing through it to get it done. I don't think so. They play for one hour regardless of what variations are it are not used. Some of the other players may smile (or maybe grimace) when the virtuoso takes off on a flight of fancy. Some times he goes solo. Sometimes they all seem to enjoy following and anticipating where he is going. I don't know, but for the broadsided music lover it's fun. Even if they "just" deliver the music as written. They are highly talented and if is a sublime experience.

I attended one of their concerts in St. Adalbert's Church on my last evening in Krakow. It was the icing on the cake to my stay. The concert lasted just an hour and consisted of a varied programme.

This is not something we would normally do, but glad we did. The church itself is 11th century and situated in the main square, it is small and has a lovely intimate atmosphere. There were four musicians, but one was obviously the major performer and was supported by the others. We really enjoyed the music and they played for just over an hour. It would of been nice if the musicians had made abit more connection with the audience, but overall it was a fine performance and we would recommend it.
