This is a pretty gate but to get to it (other than walking through it) you need to buy a ticket from the Barbican just outside. This then allows you to visit the city walls and Florian Gate, including the small exhibition.
The Barbican visit is excellent and it is worth viewing the walls and gate too as there is a nice little model to show how it all originally fitted together.

This Gothic 34.5 meter-high gateway tower is located across from the Barbican, to which it was once connected via a drawbridge over the city moat.

The tower was erected in 1307 and is the most important of the city's eight medieval gates of the city's ancient defenses which once circled the medieval Old Town.

We used this stunning gate as an entry from the railway station to the Old Town and Florianska Street leading us to the market square where our hotel was located.

The name comes from the nearby Church of St Florian and it was the main gate of the seven leading into the city situated in the line of defence walls. Moreover it was through this gate that kings would enter the city after victorious battles, it was also used for ceremonial reasons by diplomats, and famous personages visiting Kraków. Furthermore the route of royal coronation and funerary processions, led through the gate.

St. Florian's Gate is a pretty cool Gothic tower/gate house. There are some short remnants of the old city wall you can walk along if you get an entry ticket and a barbican out front you can visit as well. The best part is really just seeing the tower from the street.

Wonderful art can be found here, as well as live music if you time it right. We were passing through on our way to somewhere else and was mesmerized by the music and artwork. We found the right piece for our collection and listened intently as the guy played the saxophone to some new music 😊. I will say that we did not visit the museum, just walked the length of the fragment wall.

This medieval beauty is a reminder from what the old city was during centuries and how were the defenses against attacks.

Don’t miss the opportunity to cross the gate walking around and enjoying the different points of view.

The mind of a traveler.

Had the pleasure of staying in a hotel directly across from the gate. The wall and gate are interesting pieces of history that are well preserved. Great to visit if in Krakow but not worth a trip across country to see.

Just imagine people in the early 1300s erecting a tower like this. Stone by stone, while in the upper parts bricks were used. Part of the wider defense system of the city it was an immense effort, but people were motivated, as an attack by the Tatars in 1241 led to destruction of most of the city. They must have thought: 'that never again'.

Early 1800s the walls and towers including St. Florians had lost their functionality. The tower, barbikan and adjoining sections of the wall survived the demolition effort, thanks to an initiative by a professor. Note the Gothic style, lean and high reaching into the heavens.

Originally Krakow's walled defences consisted of 39 towers and 10 gates but the Brama Florianska is the last remaining part of this. It was the main gate guarding the northern approach to the city. On the side of the gate that faces the old town is a bust of St. Florian, the patron saint of fire brigades, putting out a fire in the old town.

This city gate offers you a fantastic view of the street all the way up to St Mary’s Basilica. Our local Gide explained that this was one of the old city gates which had been restored and redeveloped as is now part of the Royal Passage for important visitors to the City. There are musicians, paintings and artists and and great atmosphere to soak up.
