Went on the tour of the Jewish Quarter with Dale. He was a friendly, engaging and informative guide, and the tour flew by despite being several hours long. A genuine pleasure, harrowing subject matter notwithstanding.

A long tiring day with lots of walking, but one of those things that everyone should do. Auschwitz is bad enough, but wait till you get to Birkenau....

There are many tour groups that offer trips to Auschwitz-Birkenau, it can be hard to know which one to book with. We made the right choice with Krakow City Tours, however I think that our satisfaction with the day came more from the tour guide we were given than the tour company itself. Let me explain...
Krakow City Tours organize a bus, a driver and a tour manager who is on the bus with you and basically just collects tickets and presses 'play' on the DVD that you watch on the way to Auschwitz. When you arrive at Auschwitz you are greeted by another, and I guess 'official', tour guide who takes you though both Auschwitz and Birkenau. Our tour guide was perhaps the best that I have had the privilege of meeting. He was clearly very knowledgeable about both Auschwitz and Birkenau as he was able to answer all questions in detail and gave a very memorable, yet sombre, tour of the two camps. So really the tour company was great, they got us there and back, but it was the incredible tour guide we were fortunate enough to be given that made the experience so memorable.

Worst organization ever. They ask you to be at the meeting point at 5.30 for departure at 5.45 and start giving tickets to people in the 6.oo tour first because the group doing the salt mines and Auschwitz combo is larger. Choose any other tour operator.
If you buy only Auschwitz they anyhow make you use the same bus that goes to the salt mines.
The description says you may leave your stuff in the bus while you visit but the bus is going away with other people.

They canceled our Auschwitz tour less than 24 hours before the tour date! This is completely unacceptable because it's really hard to find another tour -in our language- for the next morning. Unprofessional, we booked it a week ago, there were lots of options for other companies at the time, but now they're all sold out. thanks a lot!!

Went on a trip to the Salt Mine. This was very badly organized. Endless waiting before we went down and even more waiting after we finished as we had to wait for another group that shared the same bus.
Not recommended. Salt mines are very interesting but do it with another company.

The first part of the tour (Auschwitz I Museum) started around 7:50 am, when we finished we had a break of 25 minutes before moving to Auschwitz II-Birkenau (this transfer lasts 15 minutes by bus). When we arrived at Auschwitz II, we walked 15 minutes towards the train car (not a single word from the guide). We we got there the guide explained in less than 5 minutes the story of the place and we returned to the main entrance because according to her, "there were many people entering the brick barracks", inexplicably returning us to the main entrance (again not a single word of the guide and the same way - we lost lost half of an hour). We entered inside two wooden barracks on the side of the main entrance, she explained “everything” in 5 minutes and then she told us that the tour was finished, this was at 10:15 am. The guide did not explain anything, considering all the information and history present in these places, and the service that we had contracted. We asked her why the tour was so short, to which she replied that it was the estimated time of the tour, and then another guide came to apologize because they had not warned us that this would be a short tour (2.5 hours in instead of the 3.5 promised by the company), leaving us free until 11:05 am, at which time we had to be on the bus. At 12:15 we were already in Krakow. We went to the agency to leave a claim and ask for an explanation, where the front desk guy named Robert told us that they can’t do anything because since they outsource the tours with museum. So they are only responsible for issues related to transportation (according to him, we should know this). Robert does not have the capacity to solve problems, and instead of giving us a solution or trying to improve our experience as clients, we left more disappointed of the company. Also we figure out that he speak spanish, and he did not told us. Everything could’ve been much easier for us. I do not recommend this tour.

So, I am no stranger to travel. By the time I was 12, I had filled 2 passports, at 18 I became a tour guide and by 20, had my own guide services company. I worked for an airline for 30 years and have been on too many organized tours to count. I am a stickler for rules and I am ALWAYS on time. I booked the Salt Mine Tour with this company because I had used them before. My son & I checked in at their desk 35 minutes before the appointed time and were told to wait outside & not board the bus that was currently at the sidewalk, because it was a private Spanish group. We sat on a bench not 10 feet away and awaited to be called. Another bus pulled up, another (loud) Spanish group embarked, we watched that 2nd bus pull away a few minutes later. At our appointed time, no bus appeared, so we went back inside to enquire and were told we had missed our bus & that there was nothing they could do for us! They sent us back to the main office to fill out a complaint form and locked the door behind us! We hurried back to the office, expecting a solution, only to be told too bad, so sad. After arguing our case, the agent suggested we take a taxi to the mines, as the group wasnt scheduled to enter for another 40 min (keep in mind, at this point over 30 minutes had gone by). Of course the taxi was to be at our expense - fine. Our hopes up again, we embarked on a rush-hour taxi journey, which got us to the venue 2 minutes past the entry time - the group had already entered. We were not permitted to join them without purchasing new tickets. Since we were there, we had no choice really, but to do just that. 2 new tickets, at full price. We did the tour, but never did meet up with our group and by the time we exited, the tour bus was gone - again. It was now 6pm, there were no taxis, no way to get back to town other than a train which was 2hours later. The entire experience was infuriating and could have been avoided so easily by following the simple rules of tourism: 1) I know the guide had a passenger list & should have done a head count. 2) seeing that there were people missing, typically a courteous call-out should have been made 3) if people are missing and you havent reached your departure time, you should wait until the appointed time before pulling away (when we went into the office the 2nd time, it was 4 minutes before departure) 4) if your customer has an issue, a solution should be reached by discussing options - not simply dismissing your customer. Precious time was wasted by sending us back to the office - had a taxi been suggested from the get-go, we would have easily rejoined the group!
To top it all off, I wrote to the general manager of the company to voice my concern over this fiasco - waiting a whole month before doing so, so as to not write in anger - and you guessed it - I never even got an acknowledgment! The least they could do was apologize for ruining what had been up till then, a near perfect holiday....or is that too much to ask? Sorry for the rant!

I cant say I was really "looking forward" to taking the Auschwitz tour but felt i needed to, to pay my respects. The tour was well organised and the guides very friendly and helpful.
My main issue would be with the fact the whole thing felt very rushed and as though we were being herded through like cattle.
The guides in the group behind ours were very pushy and at one point even shouted at our guides to hurry up! We couldn't have gone any faster as the place was extremely busy and we had to wait for other groups to move on.
I don't feel we had sufficient opportunity to see the whole exhibition or even stop to read things that were on display and i came away thinking that we had missed a lot of important information.
There was a man in the group in-front of ours, with his 5 year old daughter, who i felt was very disrespectful as he was treating it like an outing to Disneyland. He had his daughter posing and smiling for photographs in-front of everything, the death wall, the gas chamber etc.and i found it totally unacceptable.I feel the guide of his tour should have stepped in and advised him accordingly but they seemed oblivious.
I really would have liked to have been able to have some time just to stand and read the signs and to wander through the camp at a slower pace to pay my respects and to think about all of the people who lost their lives there but there wasn't any opportunity for this.
I know this may sound strange, as i had gone there as a tourist myself, but i feel as though the whole experience is far to commercialised and was too busy with tourists. I feel it should have a limited number of visitors per day and they should not be allowed to take photographs or treat it as another "attraction".

Went to their offices on Plac Jan Matejki yesterday (Sunday 29 Jan 2013) to see if we could book a tour to Auschwitz for today (Monday 30 Jan 2013), spoke to a very helpful member of staff (Magdalena [--]) who spoke excellent English and explained to us that there were 2 yours running on the next day - 9:00 or 12:15. The 9:00 tour was in several languages and the 12:15 tour in English only. She persuaded us that the English only tour at 12:15 would be less busy and therefore the better option. We agreed and asked her to book us on it. She printed, signed and stamped 2 tickets, folded them in half and passed them to my husband who put them in his pocket.

We got up the next morning, killed some time at iur hotel and then went to the supermarket to buy food and drink for the trip. My husband checked we had the tickets for the tour and it was only then we noticed that the tickets had the wrong time printed on them. According to our tickets, we were booked onto the 9:00 tour. We went back to the office (by this time it was 11:45) to enquire as to why our tickets said the wrong time only to be told that the 12:15 tour for that day had been cancelled as no one had booked on it. We repeated that this was not our fault, it was the member of staff who booked the tour that incorrectly booked us on the wrong tour but the member of staff in the office (unfortunately different to the one we saw yesterday) told us there was nothing we could do. We asked for a refund, this was also refused. Absolutely disgusting.

I would not recommend you use this company but if you do then make sure you thoroughly check any tickets before leaving the office as their mistakes can cost you your money!!!

Dear Kotteraya, I'm very sorry to say that I find your review VERY UNFAIR. First of all you should never use someone's name if you are not sure how the situation will finish! I do admit that there was mistake on the ticket and you missed your tour beacuase of that. But we also send you our apologize for this mistake. It happens sometimes! Unfortunately I'm not the person who is responsible for member of our staff who didn't want to help you after you realized you have ticket with wrong hour of departue. What's more I would like to remind you that I was the person who REFUND you whole amount for this tour!! You didn't mention that! I took full responsibility for my mistake, apologize and refund you money you spend on the tour you could not join. Next time I advise you to check the ticket you are reciving anywhere in the world becuase you are working with poeple, not machines, mostly responsible for their mistakes. Unfotrunately customers do not take responsibility for anything and word thiev in improper situations... Magdalena
