Walking down Ulica Grodzka is something I always enjoy doing ,I love the architecture ,I love the pubs ,bars and restaurants and the history of this street is fascinating ,behind the beautiful Church Of St Giles is a simple cross and memorial to one of the most cowardly acts committed in World War Two .
With Poland's close proximity to both Germany and Russia ,the country's fate was more or less sealed ,it's well documented about the horrendous fate of the established Jewish faith in this country and the city of Krakow ,it's often overlooked that the Russians were just as brutal in their treatment of the Polish people as their former allies the Germans and if one act sums up the Russians and their compliance in the brutalities committed to the Polish people during the war it's the Katyn Forest Massacre .
Between April 1940 and May 1940 with orders that all Polish officers were to be separated from the 1000's upon 1000's of Polish P.O.W ,they were systematically packed into cattle trucks ,transported to Russia were they were executed in the forests of Katyn ,Kalinin and Kharkiv ,in total some 22.000 Polish officers were executed by the Peoples Commissariat For Internal Affairs aka N.K.V.D. .
The incident became known as the Forests of Nightmares after the Nazi's found the graves in 1943 ,Soviet knowledge of the incident was denied up until 2010 when acceptance of the atrocity and Stalin's part in the atrocity was accepted ,in a twist of fate and on the 70th anniversary of the massacre then Polish president Lech Kaczynski along with 95 civilian and military leaders travelled by plane for a ceremony of remembrance when their aircraft crashed ,no survivors ,the cross behind the church is simple, powerful and very poignant and if you're walking down Ulica Grodzka is worth paying your respects to .

Being in such close proximity to both Germany and Russia, Poland's fate was always going to be horrendous during WW2, it's very well documented the atrocities that befell the Polish people and especially the Jewish population by the German forces but the atrocities committed by the Russians was equally horrendous and barbaric and the poigant Katyn Forest Massacre Memorial is a stark reminder of what the Russian " liberators " were capable of.
Between April and May 1940 with orders that all Polish office's be separated from the hundreds of thousands of Polish p.o.w's and packed into cattle trucks and transported to Russia were they were unceremoniously and systematically executed in the forests of not just Katyn but also Kalinin and Kharkiv ,some 22.000 Polish officers were murdered by the Peoples Commissariat For Internal Affairs aka N.K.V.D. the atrocities are also known as the " forest of nightmares " .
In 1943 the Nazis found the graves but all knowledge of the atrocities were denied up untill 2010 when the Soviets finally pointed the fingers at Stalin and his murderous cronies and ultimately at themselves ,in a twist of fate Polish President Lech Kaczynski with 95 other civilian and military leaders were travelling on the 70th anniversary of the massacre to Katyn when their aircraft crashed killing all on board.
The simple cross behind the beautiful Church Of St Giles at the end of Ulica Grodkza and at the start of Wawel Hill which brings you up to the castle is one of the most poignant and thought provoking memorials I've seen in the city .
Visiting this memorial is very moving especially if you know the story behind it,let's not forget those poor victims and learn that no one wins in wartime, you only have victims.

Interesting background to this monument and much unnecessary suffering in its traces. An important part of Poland's history and a constant source of different feelings. Beautiful and clean and simple cross, which is easily seen, symbolically placed below the great castle. Many tourists, like us, are unaware of the dark background of the monument.

This cross is a simple memorial of the infamous Katyn massacre, where the Soviets killed thousands of Polish nationalists in 1940.
Unfortunately, not enough information is provided about this event near the memorial.

I knew nothing about Kalyn until I came to the cross in Kraków near the castle. Each day I passed by their were flowers soI researched the event on line and went back to pay proper respect. I also bought the Polish film with English subtitles so know much more now. A proper memorial of a dreadful event and the lies that surrounded it.

Our Good Crackow free walking tour guide took us to this memorial. I had absolutely no knowledge of this massacre and I'm glad that someone had the vision to remember the thousands of lives taken. Poland, being between Germany and Russia, has had such a tragic history.

Katyn Forest Massacre Memorial is a very touching and poignant monument and memorial to the Soviet organised atrocities committed to the Polish during ww2.
Between April and May of 1940 the NKVD systematically executed Polish army offices, police members, landowners, lawyers, factory owners and priests who were ruthlessly executed in various locations including Katyn Forest from were the monument takes its name but also in Kalinin and Kharkiv by these cowards.
Originally these atrocities were attributed to the Nazis, but on finding the graves in 1943 the Nazis wasted no time in highlighting the massacre as a cowardly atrocity committed by the Soviets.
It took the Soviets till 2010 to point the finger at Stalin and his cronies,a gesture that in my opinion was long overdue and In keeping with the secretive nature of that country.
It's a monument you should visit so as not to forget the innocent victims of Soviet oppression.
The simple cross is found in the Old Town very close to Wawel Castle and the beautiful Cathedral.
Well worth a visit.
