Hi guys, I made a 2-day trip to Katowice and Auschwitz by my own, and I would recommend everybody to do this once in your life.
I arrived to Katowice Airport and changed 20 Euro at the Airport, don't do it! Change just 10 Euro for the bus and the rest later in Katowice!
Than I went to Katowice town by Minibus, and it cost 25 PLZ (about 6 Euro). There were waiting infront of the Airport. Later I realized that there are normal buses too- AP2, witch cost just 14 PLZ (about 3,5 Euro).
Katowice is very clean, the people are friendly, and I felt save at any moment.
To Auschwitz I went by train, you can by your ticket 10min before your train, it cost 6 PLZ (about 1,5 Euro) in one way, and I recommend to buy just one way and later the ticket back because if you want to pay the cheaper price you have to tell exactly with what train you want to go back.
The train station in Auschwitz is about 20min by foot feom the Museum Auschwitz I.
I booked a guieded tour online on the Auschwitz website for 70 PLZ (about 16 Euro). You can entry just 25min before your tour starts, so it's not needed to come 2 hour before because you have to wait outside. The tour was fine, a little too rushy, and you have to walk fast, but there are a lot of visitors, so they have to rush it up. After 2 hours of visiting Auschwitz I, we went by shutle-bus to Auschwitz II- Birkenau. The tour ended after 1 hour visiting Auschwitz II. After the tour you can stay at Auschwitz II and visit everything again by your own slowly.
Take a Moment and feel the vibrations, walk alone by the barraks and think about that horror that happends there.
After another 2 hours walking alone, i went back to the train by foot and came to Katowice. That day I walked about 16 km, but I'm happy that I made that trip on my own.

We made our own way to Auschwitz-Birkenau by bus from Katowice, and then took the train back. When we arrived we found that due to the number of visitors we weren’t allowed to go around on our own until after 1pm, which would have meant us waiting for over 2hrs, so we opted to join a guided tour instead that was leaving in half an hr. The tour was good albeit rushed slightly, and it didn’t allow for visiting all of the areas as it focussed on the main displays, however if we had have gone around on our own we would have definitely been there all day. Some people struggled to keep up with the tour as we spent 90 minutes walking round at Auschwitz, and then hopped on a bus to birkenau to walk round for approximately another hour and a half, so not recommended for visitors who struggle with walking - much of it is on uneven ground too. The various guided tour groups constantly clashed also which meant it was often difficult to look in the display stands (on the Auschwitz site especially). Our guide confirmed that the number of visitors each year were rapidly growing, - I believe he said there were over 2.5 million last year alone which was the most they’d ever seen.
It is definitely worth visiting though in order to understand more about such a significant historical atrocity, but I would recommend trying to go round on your own so you can spend more time looking and taking it in. I felt that the ‘rushed’ guided tour took away some of the opportunity to reflect and ponder - having said that, I can understand why they need to organise visitors in this way given the sheer volume that are there at any one time.

Very traumatic but something that is neccessary. This reminder of how inhuman man can be is a very stark memorial to the millions who died because of a warped ideology. Will we ever learn? Probably not. Ethnic cleansing is still the biggest evil in the world.

Absolutely a sobering history lesson. One of those places you want to see and experience, but ends up emotionally draining you. A very quiet and thought provoking visit.

Been here outside of school holidays. Very impressive.

But it did felt a bit like a touristic attractions. This because of the amount of people. Guided tours all around you!
