Although largely destroyed during WW2 and subsequently rebuilt, it still has some of the "old town" feeling to it. Many restaurants and a central point of the city.

While most of the cities around are industrial cities from 19th century, Gliwice has a history reaching at least since 1276, when it was mentioned as a city already.
The old city has a typical Silesian medieval plan and is oval in shape, with some remains of the city walls remaining. In the centre there's the market square, and in the centre of it there's a town hall, which is neo-classicist in shape, but allegedly gothic inside.

The town hall is also decorated by an 18th-century fountain of Neptune, which commemorates connection between Gliwice and the sea established thanks to the Gliwice channel (now non-existant, a dried up bed used to remain until recently, nowdays a wide way was lead in it, across Zwycięstwa Street). The fountain consists of a statue of Neptune riding a fish and holding a steel trident. Water comes from the fish and from the trident. The statue was made by an artist from Opawa / Opava / Troppau, a city in Czech Silesia.

Next to it is, recently uncovered, old well.

In one of the corners, there's a statue commemorating a fire in the city. There's also another statue next to the town hall.

The market square is flanked by many, mostly low and not very decorative, buildings, some with arcades.

There are many shops around, and they used to change a lot. The unchanging bits are the drug store, Empik book shop, and the religious library of St Hiacynthus. The rest changes a lot. There are some places to eat and drink, and the town hall is filled with so-called beer gardens, that is places for sitting while eating or drinking.

Small but very charming market square in Gliwice is the best place to spend the evening. This is the place where the night live of Gliwice is going on. Lots of places where you can have a drink or eat something delicious you will find there everything.

I’m certainly biased as it’s my home city BUT! The architecture of your surroundings is stunning with All Saints Church in the background. There is a few good bars in the square, as well as growing number of little cute cafeterias and restaurants in the side streets. There is a beautiful fountain-sculpture of Neptun and stunning City Hall located in the middle.
The service in the area needs improvements but it’s a culture thing. We polls seem to be a little behind on the customer service front.
But overall do not miss if you are visiting Gliwice or nearby places.

A typical city square like you can see all around Poland. Full of colours and beautiful buildings. It is quite small comparing with Krakow but you get a warm feeling when you walk around...
