About
The exhibition is the largest permanent display of world's butterflies in Poland. Over five thousand (5049) specimen from all over the world can be viewed. Realised in 2009 by Jacek Kobiela and his son Filip Kobiela, the collection is a crowning of the over 35 year lasting passion of the former. Together, the two represent the second and the third generation of collectors in the family. They continue the legacy of Prof. Stanislaw Fischer, who established the Bochnia Museum in 1959, which currently bears his name. ,,Arthropoda's" collection includes an overview of day and night butterflies divided into families and genuses present in all of the world's continents. The collection shows arthropods - the biggest group of animals living on earth: day and night butterflies, beetles (Poland and world), scorpions, mantes, hemiptera. Species from around Bochnia comprise a substantial part of the collection. The exhibition is complemented by a selection of macro pictures of butterflies and beetle heads shot by Filip Kobiela. Butterfly classification is based on the taxonomy of Linnaeus, who first introduced latin binomial nomenclature describing biological species. The museum presents species, whose appearance and biology ilustrate various natural phenomena - a moth doesn't have to be grey and a butterfly can be a leaf, an owl or a tiger.

A place you can just omit, if you are not aware of its existence or you are neglecting the small road signs. The beautiful private collection of butterflies, bugs and other small insect beings. The owner(s) are ready to tell you more than one can find in books. They are passionate about the collection and the place. Very interesting biology lesson, full of intensive colors and shapes. Recommended for everybody.

Bohnia butterfly museum houses an absolutely stunning and comprehensive collection of some of the most beautiful creatures in the world. We have found this amazing place while looking for things to do around Cracow during our visit in Poland. We spent a little more than an hour exploring detailed patterns of butterfly wings and will definitely come back for more if we're ever in the area again.

I have no clue how many butterflies I've seen today, but they were amazingly beautiful, and the museum is nice, peaceful, and educating. It takes some 15 to 30 minutes to visit (depends if you want to listen to the guide or go by yourself) and leaves you with a sad conclusion, that "when you were young" you've seen some of those creatures around, but not anymore. I highly recommend it before or after the salt mine.

A hidden gem in Bochnia. We don't think that someone is prepared for what is hidden behind these closed doors.
It might look small, but you will be surprised by the huge collection, fascinating facts, and just the story behind this wonderful passion.
If you are in for a truly beautiful and mesmerizing museum experience, then please do not miss out on this place.
If you find joy and beauty in the little things, then this is definitely something for you.
We had this museum on our list for quite some time, and we finally managed to plan a visit. It exceeded our expectations.
Go and support the locals in Bochnia. There is more to this little town than just the amazing salt mine.

A friend, Paul, showed me some of the highlights of his hometown, Bochnia, a couple of years ago. We visited the oldest Salt mine in Poland and then stopped by this beautiful little museum for a wonderful private tour. The gentleman who created the museum, Jacek Kobiela, is fascinating himself. He is an artist who works on amazing restoration projects. His passion for collecting led to the beautifully curated Arthropoda Butterfly Museum. His collection spans the globe and his artistic talent lends color and beauty to the space. I really enjoyed the visit. It is interesting, educational and a worthwhile visit if you are in the area! Enjoy!

We stumbled across this great butterfly museum while staying in Cracow and searching fro something to do outside of the city. We wanted to go and see something different and Bochnia seemed to have two things we were eager to check out - the salt mine and something more quirky - the butterfly museum. We took a car from cracow and in about 1 hour we were already in Bochnia. The tour lasted about 1 hour (depending how much interested you are in butterflies) and was well presented and informative. After that we were left to ourselves with some magnifying glasses to explore the details of these beautiful butterflies. There are some truly beautiful ones in this impressive exposition. Seeing them from close kind of makes you want to go out and search for them yourself!!! but in case you can't suddenly drop everything and travel to Madagascar or Asia, there are some boxed ones on sale to bring home with you and we couldn't resist but get one!
