Monument by Czesław Dźwigaj to the workers killed during the 1970 anti-communist protests, known as the "Angel of Freedom" or Monument to the Victims of December 1970.
Unveiled on 28 August 2005 on plac Solidarności on the 25th anniversary of the founding of Solidarity, this 11-metre-tall and nearly 9-and-a-half-ton bronze monument commemorates the tragic events of December 1970, when, following workers’ demonstrations on the streets of Szczecin, 16 people were killed. The monument is of an angel standing on a ship which is breaking through the concrete slabs of the ground to rise above the earth. Commemorative plaques bear the names of the victims.

Angel of Freedom is one of Szczecin's most recent attractions, located at Solidarity Square (Plac Solidarnosci), only few steps from The Pomeranian Castle, the Castle Route and the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul and also only five minute walk from Rodla Square. I would strongly recommend checking it out, not only due to location close to other major attractions but also due to its interesting history.
It's a massive (9 tonnes), 11-metre tall angel holding a crown of thorns with word 'Grudzien1970' (Polish for 'December 1970') written on it. The angel is standing in a small boat and crushing concrete blocks around it as the creature emerges from the underground. There are also four memorial plaques scattered around the monument with the names of all 16 people killed at this very square on December 17th 1970.
It's an important and meaningful monument dedicated to the victims of incident that took place in Szczecin but was also part of country-wide strikes against communist authorities' decision to drastically increase prices of food. The strikes initially started in Gdansk, Gdynia and Szczecin shipyards and then spread to city centres, bringing casualties to both sides. More than 100 people were injured and 16 killed in Szczecin itself when the communist police and army forces opened fire to protesting crowds at Solidarity Square. Many of those killed were in their teens and twenties, local students fighting for their rights and dignity, and many were said to be only passers-by...
It is believed that these events played a huge role in compromising some of the communist leaders and were an important step in a fight to end communism in Poland.
The Angel was created by sculptor Prof. Czeslaw Dzwigaj (well known for Pope John Paul II monuments) and presented to the public on August 28th 2005 during the celebrations of 25 years of Solidarity movement in Poland.

The angel of freedom looked better when there was a park in this place, now it stands sadly on a concrete plane.

Makes you stop and reflect on that which most of us take for granted cost others their lives in a struggle for freedom.

A very fitting tribute to those who were killed protesting in 1970 and importantly located in a square that is one of the icons of Szczecin. It can't be missed and shouldn't be either.

This sculpture is masterfully made. The details are lifelike but also a bit surreal. I gives off an eerie feeling. Somewhat unsettling as if the angel will move any moment and fly away.

This monument commemorates those who died in the uprising of 1970. Imposing in size, carrying a crown of thorns, but with a peaceful face, the angel reminds us that freedom often comes at a great cost.

This sculpture is a beautiful tribute to the 16 young people killed during a protest in 1970. The names of those killed are carved on plaques at the base of the statue. A humbling experience to see and realize these people died not so long ago.
