About
Shakespeare in Gdańsk? If you’re wondering what to do in Gdańsk, we’ll help you out with this tip – one of the most interesting local attractions is The Gdańsk Shakespeare Theatre. The Gdańsk Shakespeare Theatre has been built on the historic site of the 17th century Fencing School – the first public theatre of the then Republic of Poland. It is here where English players presented William Shakespeare’s plays, already during his own lifetime. Nowadays, one of the most extraordinary and modern theatres in the world is located here. Its wooden frame is a reconstruction of the former Elizabethan – in style theatre in Gdańsk. Certainly, you will not pass indifferently by the theater building – it is distinguished by the dark anthracite bricks, is covered and with a huge opening roof, which allows to stage performances also in daylight. Join an hour long tour with our guides and hear colorful stories about the theatre during Shakespeare’s time and the unusual architecture!

Great visit, I liked the pace of life there, the sights are beautiful. & People were generally helpful & polite. Getting used to the currency was tricky. But shops have tills that easily enough to read. Food was good. Especially liked there bakery shops. Altogether a great break in a lovely place.

Informative, enjoyable theatre tour of the Gdansk Shakespeare Theatre (from lobby, to stalls, to galleries) arranged by ESRA (European Shakespeare Research Assn.) on the opening day of its biennial Congress in late July 2017. Our tour guide gave us a thorough history of theatre in Gdansk (I learned that early 17th-century English players performed in Gdansk) & this new theatre that just opened in 2014. It's a computerized marvel, combining design components of the Fortune Theatre in early modern London & contemporary technology. Its roof opens to the skies & its luxurious white leather seats completely retract to create a standing "pit" around a convertible thrust stage. Gorgeous white balsam wood & white marble throughout the interior. Also experienced 2 avant garde productions -- The Island, based on The Tempest, as part of the Congress opening ceremonies, & Titus 2.0 on the Sat. evening of the Congress. Outstanding theatre venue. Hope to return.

We went for a guided tour in the theatre and were very satisfied. It was intresting to see how the roof opens - of course! Architecture of the theatre is a beautiful contemporary example of imagination although it is not the most comfortable building for audience and staff.

In the style of an old theatre you can either sit in the gallery or stand by the stage where the actors will occasionally move among you. The show is in Polish but above the stage is a screen showing English and German subtitles.
During the intermission you can get a drink at the bar.

Have been twice for concerts not yet for theater. The location is built very new, modern and well designed. It is done in a retro of the historic theatres of the times of Shakespear. Not the most comfortable to sit if you are unlucky and have seats at the side but still an experience and the acustics are very good.

In July 2015 we visited Gdansk for the second time. Since our first visit a new attraction had been added among things to see in this beautiful city. Believe it or not, Gdansk has a theatre designated to the works of William Shakespear!
The performance our evening out, was Merry Wives of Windsor. You did not have to understand Polish to realize that great acting was going on on-stage. By the way, the show was subtitled in both English and German. English translation could have been a bit better though.
One special addition to the theatre is the retractable roof. The show starts at 4 pm, so normally the roof would have been open, and the set lit by sunlight. On our night the roof was closed due to heavy rains.
A visit to this theatre is highly recommended if you want to experience theatre in a new way. And don't let the language barriere put you off. It was fun and intersting anyway.

A very modern theater building that replaced old classic ones that had been destroyed in the war. There is a display outside showing what used to be here and the design of the new theater.

This is a fascinating theatre and it is hard to explain everything here. All you need to know is that if you have any interest in theatre, it is well worth an hour of your time to go on the tour.

Very interesting architecture inside, outside it looked like a big black block. Excellent back stage tour: she had good knowledge of history and theatre and the building. We come back for Shakeskeare festival next summer!
