Acted as our starting point for our free Walkative tour. The tour guide provided some history of the gate before we headed into the Old Town.
The Golden Gate is a historic Renaissance city gate in Gdańsk, Poland. It is located within the Royal Route, the most prominent part of the historic city center.
It was created in 1612–14 in place of a 13th-century gothic gate, the Brama Długouliczna (Long Street Gate). It is located at one end of Ulica Długa where, together with Brama Wyżynna (Highland Gate) and Wieża Więzienna (Prison Tower), it forms a part of the old city fortifications.
One side of the gate was under renovations but the beautiful parts of the gate were still visible.
Worth passing through as you head towards Long Street for dinner or shopping.

Moving from the High Gate and the Prison Tower, you enter the Old City through the Golden Gate. They are strikingly different from the High Gate in style, although they were created only a quarter of a century later. If the first ones still carry Renaissance features, then the Golden Gate was created in the style of Dutch mannerism, although its author Abraham van den Block was born in Prussian Königsberg, but realized himself in Gdansk. Erected in 1612-1614 on the site of a 13th-century Gothic gate, the Golden Gate is distinguished by beautiful decoration and sculptures on the frieze. The statues were installed later in 1648, in the year of the Peace of Westphalia, which put an end to the bloody Thirty Years' War. Figures symbolizing peace, freedom, happiness and glory look to the western side, and harmony, justice, piety and prudence to the eastern side. The educational effect is complemented by a paraphrase of the famous Latin maxim - Ubi concordia, ibi victoria - Where there is agreement, there is victory. In the version on the gate, it reads: “Small republics grow in harmony, because of disagreement, large republics fall apart.” In Prussian times, ancient wisdom was supplemented with biblical wisdom from Psalm 122. Naturally, already in German, because Prussia was Lutheran.. The only thing that is not on the gate is gold, even symbolic. Evaporated over the centuries, probably?

The Golden gate dates back to 1614 when it was built as the western entrance to old town. During the centuries it was damaged many times, but totally after WWII.
After it was rebuilt and still serves its purpose. However, I didn't realize any clew why it's called golden, as it's mainly white with only few golden inscriptions. Anyway, a nice and quick photo op when walking the old town.

As you walk down Dlugi Street from the big entrance at the Green Gate, this is the gate at the other end. So stroll down the entire street, note and admire the large number of highly-decorated buildings, and then you can pass through this impressive old gate. Outside is one of the big theaters.

Brama Złota Długa - Golden Gate - a historical monument from the 17th century. During the Second World War the city gate was destroyed and later rebuilt. It was beautiful to see from the outside.

One of several gates leading to the old town of Gdansk ! You will probably pass the gate without spending too much time on the gate itself...

We went through this gate to the Christmas Market every day we were in Gdansk. Yet another lovely piece of architecture to admire in this beautiful city.

Beautiful Gate that heralds your entrance or exit to Dluga. It houses a photograph of the day it was destroyed. Walk through it and enjoy the view left and right, pop in for a coffee and nearby and study the detail from close by.

This was an interesting gate between opening for the main street and old buildings the opposite way. Invest both directions!
