As with all gates in Gdansk, built to impress and it is still doing so today - and the street musicians make full use of the acoustics

Very impressive entrance/exit to Dluga and always has street musicians making use of the acoustics. Looks fantastic at night.

The Green Gate constitutes one of the earlier examples of Dutch Mannerism in Gdańsk and the first early modern city gate in the city.
Moreover the building serves as a perfect terminating vista of the urban layout of the Long Market.

To walking throug this gate is lovely, you can go to the river/canals or up the main street in the old town with a completely different atmosphere. The building itself is a gem, I certainly want to go back to investigate more.

It was actually built a little before 1564-1571 as speculated here previously, it was erected between 1564-1956 to be precise, and intended to be used as a residence for Polish Kings, not just as a gate, but no kings ever lived there longer than a short layover for a few nights by Marie Louise Gonzaga when she commuted from France to Władysław IV’s wedding in 1646..

Also, the architecture is not Flemish as implied by a fellow reviewer in a previous review but rather Manneristic. I beg the difference. Flemish is a specific Northern Renaissance art style (Belgium and Nederland) opposite to Mannerism which is a stern style that made the transition, in time and style of art and architecture, between the Late Renaissance and Baroque. In art to be more eloquent we are comparing Van Eyck and Rubens with the later work of Michelangelo and in the followers of Raphael, if you see where I am coming from. In architecture, to be correct you can only say this is a Northern Manneristic style.
Just because the construction of this gate was inspired by the Antwerp City Hall, it doesn’t necessary mean this is Flemish architecture at its best. Antwerp was the nucleus or Flemish art and the architect Regnier indeed copied the style of that building and built it in many other places, Hague- Denmark, Emden and Koln - Germany, etc.

With all these been said, it still remains a stunning structure. Another thing that many people passing under this gate lack to knowledge: the name Green Gate ( not green at all) was associated with the color of the raw stone used at building the nearby bridge. The gate did not have a name, initially it was referred to as the Gate of the Green Bridge which later became in shorter term just The Green Gate.
You go to Gdansk…you will see it, can miss that.
Cheers

This was absolutely flattened during WWII. Now it looks amazing : hats off, an amazing rebuild. Entry / Exit into the Old Town .... the prices here are really low , not a tourist trap at all.
