The former parish, brick church of the Old Town was built in 14th century. Here Hevelius was church administrator and here is also his final resting place. You can find his tomb at the rear behind the altar along with an epitaph funded by his grandson nearly 100 years after the great man's death. Unfortunately in 2006 was great fire, which resulted in the ceiling collapsing, work to restore the church took a number of years.

Had read about the biggest clock in a church and had to see if while visiting gdansk with my partner. Its amazing church ceilings are really high, the clock is amazing to look at. It was nice to sit and just listen to the the quiet of the church. A must to see while visiting gdansk.

This is a fascinating church because it is nearly a thousand years old - not this present building. It was built on the foundations of another church in the 13th century. But it is beautiful on the outside. There is a fascinating clock tower that one can go up but we were too tired and of the day to go up. But still the church inside has beautiful ceilings, some very nice artefacts. Most of it burnt down in 2006 and they are still restoring. But it is still worth going inside and what is also fascinating is the several half - timber houses around the church which used to house the church workers. These houses date back to the 16th century and are also called Tudor houses. The small windows on these may be lattice windows made of lead pieces and small pieces of glass as glass was very expensive at that time.

The bell tower is the main draw here because of the great views it gives you across the city. The entrance has a red/green traffic light system because the stairway up is so narrow but once you reach the reception on the first floor thing broaden out. The views from the top are great

St Catherine's church is the oldest church in Gdansk and was originally a protestant church. This church has the worlds first pulsar clock.

You can read all about the history in other reviews and there's information in the church itself making this a must for history buffs and those who enjoy churches and their architecture.
The highlight for me was the tiny door to the right of the main entrance for going up to the Bell Tower and higher which has a traffic light due to the narrowness of the first stairwell.
Upstairs on the first level is a room full of ancient clocks with another room full of Grandfather clocks. You need to pay a small fee to go up another floor to the top where the view is stunning!

It is worth a visit to to St. Catherine's Church, if for no other reason to witness the spirit of the Polish people. St Catherine's church is the oldest church in Gdansk, built in 1227. It was almost totally destroyed during WWII, but renovated. In 2006, a fire in the church almost destroyed it again. The parishioners rushed in and saved the remaining antiquities and have begun the renovation process again. They have a delightful little shop which sells religious articles. I met a nice young man who was able to tell me quite a bit about the history of the church.

The eldest of the Old Town churches. Church with very long tradition... and soul. In the tower You can find one of two unusual music instruments in Gdańsk - CARILLON (containing 50 different sized bells). In the tower there is also The Tower Clocks Museum, where You can see the first Pulsar clock - installed in the 2011. In 2006 (may - I think) there was very big fire in the church roof. The tower was saved, but carillon was broken. Now You can listen music from repaired carillon... This is one of my favourite church in the Old Town in Gdańsk - MUST SEE

St Catherine's Church is the oldest church in Gdańsk, Poland. It was a Protestant church from 1545 until 1945, after which it became a Roman Catholic church.

the time museum was absolutely a happy surprising visit, quite a lot of ancient ways of counting the time, mechanism from ages ago.

Beautiful view outside to see the whole city.

The church has a clock museum. We were taken on a tour with no less than the museum's director as our guide. Worth exploring. For people with stronger knees, I highly recommend climbing to the topmost part of the church and see for yourselves a panoramic view of the Old Town, as well as marvel at the gigantic bells located on the top floor.
