HISTORY - BRAVE POLISH FIGHTERS - START of WWII
Emotional place to visit. WWII started here. We went inside the ruined garrison and to the grave sites. This is a must see place. It is solemn as it should be. The polish fighters in this garrison were so brave and fighting against enormous odds. You can pay souvenirs along the walk and also they have some snack trucks too.

An excellent physical record of the severe dangers of war action.
Gdansk was one of the ports visited during a cruise holiday, and the ship moored next to this location, where the initial events of WW2 commenced in 1939. It is an open air museum consisting of wooded and open area. The wooded area has dual language displays explaining and illustrating the events that took place, with a severely war damaged building that has been left in situ to illustrate war damage. A short distance away is a wide open area with a very large vertical memorial on a mound. The museum is free to enter and represents a chilling example of the results of war. Very much worth a visit

    Where WWII began
Go here by boat from the Old Town's riverside - Westerplatte is a peninsula to the north of the city, on the Baltic coast, which came under attack on the night of 1st/2nd September 1939. After disembarking from the boat, follow the path which takes you past the remains of the guardhouses to the memorial on its hill. My only quibble was the amount of stalls selling tourist tack, utterly unconnected to the enormity of the events that happened here. It makes for an odd and somewhat uncomfortable mix, but if you ignore it, this is a must along with the Solidarity Museum, if you're even vaguely interested in Gdansk's recent rather tragic history. There's no charge for visiting Westerplatte, though there is a museum which does ask an admission fee.

Don't trust reviews, that say it's a one hour tour and back. Even if there are no remarkable buildings, mostly ruins and most standing buildings are not allow to enter, then just the walk across the nice beach is worth to take some time. If you're not interested in history and/or visiting other places with nice sea view, then skip Westerplatte. Still - I liked.

Westerplatte is a must see. BUT be very careful how you get there.

There is a kitch galleon which I cannot comment on...not our thiung. There is a public transport ferry from outside the Hilton..but for mush of year only goes irregularly at weekeds.

Then there is the one to AVOID...the Westerplatte boat next to the galleon. You think you are going near to the monument...you are dropped miles away, The boat is a rusty old tub. The fair is very high...75zloty return. Feel free cto take it if you like see run down dockyards.

Better use the bus...it gets you much nearer, cost less than £1 (free if over 70) and is quicker.

Not too much to see and we had to squeeze in the visit as we booked a one hour return slot on boat from Old Town but it was enough time for us.

Big area with some buildings and remains of it. Boards with essential information and photos. Some renovation work is goin on there. Few of glass boards with descriptions were fractured - destroyed on purpose! This place deserves more

Better with a guide who knows the history of the place. This place is infinitely important for the history of Poland, but it's state is... It leaves a lot to wish for. The big monument posed as it is the main attraction is actually placed on a hill that has stairs, but no lift or ramp for people with strollers or wheelchairs.
All other cites are "a bit" less visible, and some of the roads to them are just bad. Moreover, the info on the signs to the most points of attraction is just unreadable.

…and no doubt it’s going to happen again , sadly.

Admire the history, resilience of the Polish people and fight they had against a bully.

Poles do not ‘rollover’ , they fight with what they had and did so against the aggression of one Nation and subsequent aggression from another.

Your Country should be proud of your forefathers and it’s History…

This place is well worth a visit to understand the meaning of all of our democratic lives.

Dziękuję
