Świętojańska gate was built in the Middle Ages, at the end of the 14th century. There are no accounts of its original appearance. It was probably a small, two-story building, covered with a steep, ridge roof. In the 16th century, it lost its military significance and housed apartments and workshops. Rebuilt in the 19th century, it gained a classicist pediment located on the Motława side.
