This church is huge and the decoration inside is stunning. Built on top of a hill overlooking the valley and Olomouc you can look back and see the pilgrim road. The church is more a cathedral in size and beauty. Well worth a visit.

Svatý Kopeček is a historic city, urban area in the northeast of the City Olomouc. This significant natural dominant of Olomouc is used as a recreational place of Olomouc and since 1952 there is the Olomouc ZOO. The Holy Hill is primarily the monumental Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary.
The history of the pilgrimage place on the Saint Hill begins in the 17th century, during the Thirty Years War in Europe. Jan Andrysek, a wine dealer, promised that when he got rich he would build a church for the Virgin Mary. He forgot this, but the Virgin Mary appeared to him in his dreams. One day he was in a snowstorm that stopped just as he got on a hill. It was the place from his dream and he remembered his promise. He marked this place and went home, where he found that the owners of this place were premonsterates, a church order of monks. The church was built in the 17th and early 18th century, in the Baroque style. The 'Holy stairs' in front of the church, leading towards an alley of old trees in the direction to the city serve us as a reminder of 28 stairs in the Pilatus´s Jerusalem palace, which Jesus had to climb before his sentence to death. John Paul II honoured Svatý Kopeček by his visit in 1995, and in the same year the Church of the Visitation of Our Lady was given the title “basilica minor”. The monumental Church of the Visitation of Our Lady is the main attraction here, and rightly so.
Exhibition of nativity scenes-300 nativity scenes from different materials can be seen in the matrix may svatokopecké at Holy Hill. The museum can be found in the cloisters of the basilica of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.A trip to the monumental pilgrimage church at Svatý Kopeček offers a superb view of the town and the fertile Haná plain.
The main pilgrimage: Feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary (31.5),

The Basilica is on a hill top a few miles outside Olomouc. It really is a great location, with lovely views over the countryside. The church is quite atmospheric inside. There's not much else to do in the village - when I visited in December the cafes and zoo weren't open.

You can get there on bus 11 from the train station - takes about 20 mins, runs several times an hour.

Although Svaty Kopecek - Trip Adviosior PLEASE, correct the awful mistakes in many Czech indication, including this one!!!, is cca 10 kms outside of town, please, count in 2 or 3 hours to visit the place. You may easily reach it with town bus heading for the ZOO, Radikov, Losov. The church is a baroque jewel with magnificent frescas painted by Johann Krystof Haendke who was born in my home town Rymarov, about 45 kms north. By the way, come and see his early frescas in our Chapel V Lipkach. You furthermore may see his frescas in Olomouc churches and in the chapel of the Velke Losiny Chateau nearby Sumperk. Furthermore, the nicest views of Hana and of Olomouc are from this church. The meadow in the front of the church is also nice to take a blanket with, lie down and study or read a book. This is what students sometimes do, and I also used to do it.

This makes for a lovely half- to whole-day trip out of Olomouc, and especially on a nice, sunny day you get great views of the city and its surroundings. The monumental Church of the Visitation of Our Lady is the main attraction here, and rightly so.The church was built in the 17th and early 18th century, in the Baroque style.
There is also a ZOO (with almost 300 kinds of animals, incl. a famous ''bat house'' and a viewing tower) not too far from here - a plus if you have kids with you, and the forests around the village provide for a lovely walk, in case you had enough of man and his world.

This is a very nice church but it is far away from the city centre. However it is worth to visit, if you have got time, wonderfully decorated.

OK, nice Baroque maybe not be possible. This is a pretty amazing interior and the building has a prominent setting. It is a bus ride away from Olomouc. One bus and it goes to the village. A chance to sit down and enjoy the scenery.

Svaty Kopecek is about a 10 minute drive from the center of Olomouc. You can take a bus there. The church sits on top of the hill with a beautiful view. You can walk to the zoo from the church. Definitely worth a visit. I always take visitors here. There are several restaurants near the church.
