The fort is about an hour from Prague and we hopped on a local bus and travelled independently which was very easy and very cheap. The fort is very interesting and the tour that is included with your entry is super informative. It is a very sad place with a tragic history but a very interesting place to visit.

Very interesting and informative place to visit to realise it was not only Jews that were persecuted during the Nazi era. The cost of a tour guide was not over expensive either. I also learnt about Gavrilo Princip after seeing his spectre on one of the cells. I did not have the strength to visit the Ghetto Museum as well as the Fortress, but if I ever return to Prague I will definitely visit the Ghetto.

Built as part of a military citadel with a walled garrison town long before WWII. Includes thick earthen bermed walls, moats and 22 miles of catacombs. Was used as a Nazi concentration camp. Extreme overcrowding and cruelty in the camp and nearby Jewish ghetto resulted in 33,000 deaths. Approximately 88,000 were sent from this location to Auschwitz and other extermination camps. Our visit was led by very knowledgeable and passionate guides. We toured a museum detailing the history and use of this complex. There were items written and composed by the inmates. The guides emphasized to us how humanity must never forget the atrocities perpetrated here. We got to stand in the prisoner barracks, confinement cells, and isolation cells. We also got to walk through some of the underground tunnels used by the guards. Most chilling was the gallows where prisoners were routinely hung. While Jews lived in squalor and disease the guards had a cinema, pool and garden. According to our guide, there were 28 guards to 12,000 Jewish prisoners in this part of the complex. May we never forget.

Mark our guide was excellent. This is a very interesting part of history as it was a fort long before WW II and then used more for political prisoners than Jews although also for a bit of that as well. You could see the cell for Gavrilo Princip (the man who started WW I) who died here in 1918. Very much worth visiting

Visited as part of Pavel Batel's Terezin tour. It is absolutely mind blowing and the untold horrors of the site will stay with you for some time. Be prepared with walking boots as the site is largely untouched. Recommended to all.

This a part of the larger aspect of Terezin concentration camp . It was a prison within the camp . Unspeakable things happened here . Use a guide for the camp . We used Pavel Batel. I thought he was unbelievable . He can tell a story that keeps you memorized for hours .

We were on a Danube River Cruise extension enjoying the sites in and around Prague. After a short bus ride to Pamatnik, we walked to the entrance of Pamatnik Terezin, a concentration camp to hold the Jews during WWII before sending them to the extermination camps. We then walked through the entrance portal to met our guide. We were taken through barracks that house hundreds of Jews in deplorable conditions, solitary confinement cells, a large shower room prisoners used usually once a year, and several relatively small courtyards. Of the 150,000 Jews that were sent there, about 33,000 died there due to extreme population density, malnutrition, and disease. It was even a more sobering experience when we visited the Cremation Building that housed several ovens that were used cremate the Jews who died there when it became too expensive to bury them in the Jewish cemetery. Definitely worth a visit if in Prague.

The was where the worst of the worst happened. Visiting with Pavel Batel he gave the stories of the horror that happen in each area of the prison. I can't believe that humans could treat each other this way. The horror of this place is unforgettable. See the cells where the Nazi's lived. This fortress once belonged to Maria Teresa.

Our last hour after many learning about Terazin was spent in The Small Fortress with our guide Pavel Batel. This final piece of our tour was historical, intense and dark as we heard stories that made us cringe rather than smile and laugh. But they were stories we had to hear to understand what went on here and what we should not forget.
Pavel is a true historian who has and still does spend hours researching the events of this place including interviews with survivors of the time of this horrific camp who are all quite old now and will take their memories with them once the pass. Pavel, however, will continue to tell the real story through his tours and books. Although we learned a lot on this tour, I feel we could have spent several days here as there was so much more he had to share as he took us back in time to the years 1940 until 1945.
I would highly recommend a tour with Pavel Batel as I don't think one can even skim the surface otherwise.

How long is the tour of Mala Pevnost (Small Fortress?)
Written May 2, 2018
Hi there the takes about two hours and the travel time depends on the location you are staying. We was staying in Prague central so it was about 45-50 mins on the coach. The guide was amazing and very knowledgable.
