Despite the long history of the Fortress, much concentrates on its use as a prison during WW2. Buy a guidebook and wander around at your leisure. The book gives you much information and gives the best route to see everything. Some of the tales are horrific, others make you realise just how brave some prisoners were. Take a look at the cells for Soviet Prisoners of War, read the numbers that were crammed into each cell, and just wonder how it was done.

How can you desribe it? Informative, an eye-opener, unpleasant? A combination of all 3? A humbling experience.

Really worthwhile experience coming here. Vey moving and disturbing at times but I wouldn't have missed it for the world. Only 45 minutes to get here. We did everything in a morning and the tour guide was very helpful and knowledgable. The jewishnmuseum and ghetto museum are worthwhile too. Vey creepy town terrain though...hard to believe people still ive there. Don't miss this chance to see a this dark part of history. Never forget.

To understand Terezin you have to understand that the fort was built by the Austrians nearly 150 years before WWII as a way to block the Prussians from using the Elbe River tributary as an entrance to Prague. The small fortress was the primary fight fortress. The large fortress or Hlavni Pevnost was the garrison town. It had fortifications around it for protection but the primary fort was the small fortress as it was also closer to the river for artillery. It really is simply a town that functions that way. When you are walking the Hlavni, it certainly does not feel like a concentration camp but truly grid town.

In 1940's the Germans realized that they did not need to build a camp, they could just you the fort they acquired from the Czechs and use it to store Jews with the fortifications keeping people in rather than preventing people from getting in. Still the Large fortress need an enforcement zone and that was the purpose of the small fortress.

The entire time I was there, I was simply amazed by the town. All the Nazis did was to repurpose the camp.

Accessible by bus from Autobusové nádraží Praha Holešovice, and well worth part of an entire day trip with the Mala Pevnost. Get an early bus and plan to spend an entire day here.

Getting to this site is quite easy from Prague. There is a bus line that runs from Praha autobusové Nadrazi Praha holesovice departing from platform 7 to the memorial and the main fortress. You can save a lot of money by doing this tour on your own. It is great to see that the town has been left untouched in so many aspects. A must go

Terezin is a fascinating place and can be easily done as a day trip from Prague by public bus (one hour each way, $7 roundtrip). When you're in the city center, you can forget that you're inside what was once a formidable fortress. There are a good number of sites to see, including the Small Fortress, the cemeteries, the the Ghetto Museum, etc. I'd recommend timing your buses to allow at least 6 hours.

The fortress could not seal out evil no matter how well built. It contains excellent displays from Terezin as a concentration camp. A must see. This is 2017. Will history repeat itself? God help us.
