Garrison town turned ghetto
Jun 2019 • Family
To understand Terezin you have to understand that the fort was built by the Austrians nearly 150 years before WWII as a way to block the Prussians from using the Elbe River tributary as an entrance to Prague. The small fortress was the primary fight fortress. The large fortress or Hlavni Pevnost was the garrison town. It had fortifications around it for protection but the primary fort was the small fortress as it was also closer to the river for artillery. It really is simply a town that functions that way. When you are walking the Hlavni, it certainly does not feel like a concentration camp but truly grid town.

In 1940's the Germans realized that they did not need to build a camp, they could just you the fort they acquired from the Czechs and use it to store Jews with the fortifications keeping people in rather than preventing people from getting in. Still the Large fortress need an enforcement zone and that was the purpose of the small fortress.

The entire time I was there, I was simply amazed by the town. All the Nazis did was to repurpose the camp.

Moving, bleak, a testament to man's inhumanity to man.

Accessible by bus from Autobusové nádraží Praha Holešovice, and well worth part of an entire day trip with the Mala Pevnost. Get an early bus and plan to spend an entire day here.

Easily accessibke by bus from prague
Aug 2018 • Solo
Getting to this site is quite easy from Prague. There is a bus line that runs from Praha autobusové Nadrazi Praha holesovice departing from platform 7 to the memorial and the main fortress. You can save a lot of money by doing this tour on your own. It is great to see that the town has been left untouched in so many aspects. A must go

fascinating place
Jun 2018 • Friends
Terezin is a fascinating place and can be easily done as a day trip from Prague by public bus (one hour each way, $7 roundtrip). When you're in the city center, you can forget that you're inside what was once a formidable fortress. There are a good number of sites to see, including the Small Fortress, the cemeteries, the the Ghetto Museum, etc. I'd recommend timing your buses to allow at least 6 hours.

Fortress could not seal out evil
Oct 2017 • Couples
The fortress could not seal out evil no matter how well built. It contains excellent displays from Terezin as a concentration camp. A must see. This is 2017. Will history repeat itself? God help us.

It was built by Joseph II, Holy Roman Emperor, the most advanced Bastion fort in the time.
Museum was nice. Museum of Franz Joseph was nice too. It was very excited crossing underground, Mr. Jiří Hafman, the project manager give us a excellent tour, led us back to more than two hundred year ago.
The place just opened last year, really recommend to visit.

This building houses a museum of Terezin, the concentration camp.
Apr 2016
upon entering the museum, you see a two story wall covered in artwork by the children of the camp. Very moving, very sobbering. The entire museum is that way. However, there is an exhibit which has all the music composed by citizens of the concentration camp. You'll hear how, in the face of such gross deprivations, they composed, costumed, and put on plays and operas for their prison community. You'll come away feeling the tenacity and strength of a people living in a situation impossible for our generation to comprehend today. I am a better person for having seen this.

Ambiguity
Sep 2016
Left the place with an ambiguous feeling. Both the callousness and the malevolent genius needed to pull this off on such a scale were unbelievable. Places like this need to exist to remind us of how deep humanity can fall. But also of how resilient we are as humans.
