Neighborhood: Stare Mesto (Old Town)
One of the oldest neighborhoods in town represents the medieval heart of Prague. It’s no surprise it is bustling with tourists every time of day. Križovnický square, overlooking Charles Bridge with Prague Castle in the background, is probably the most beautiful square in the city. Its unique historical atmosphere of gothic houses and churches, cobblestone streets and squares, and stone towers blend together with the modern era. A vast array of bars, restaurants, dance clubs, international brand shops, galleries and hotels bring life to the old city. With its charming and picturesque cobblestone streets, the nightlife and parties will surely be unforgettable.

Awful waiter. We arrived at the cafe and sat outside when a waiter asked asked us to sit upstairs (weird because there was plenty of space outside). So we politely moved upstairs but due to a lack of outside space in the upstairs cafe we decided to return downstairs exactly to where we originally sitting. The waiter seemed frustrated when we returned to our original seats. The waiter came to take our order but half way through taking our order left to tell another group of people to also go upstairs (potentially poaching customers in some kind of scam?). When he finally came back and we tried to order one cappuccino and a macchiato. The waiter said he didn’t know how to make a macchiato and asked asked to my to reconsider my order (weird because upstairs there was a different barista making the drinks). I could tell he was expecting me to say that it was ok and that two cappuccinos would be fine. When I said I was sure I wanted a macchiato he then said it wasn’t possible to make it. ‘Just the one cappuccino then,’ I said. He then left for 10 seconds and came back and told us that the ‘owner’ asked us to leave apparently because ‘we were carrying food from another place with us.’ He told us to get our coffee elsewhere and said we had to leave. In conclusion, we got kicked out. This was the singular worst and most bizarre service experience I have ever had. Shame about the terrible service since the building itself is a beautiful masterpiece of Czech Cubist Architecture.

My husband and I visited here following a record from a tour guide. As part of the tour the guide spoke about this building and its significance, we we decided to return the following day for some brunch.

As tourists, we don’t know the etiquette for ordering (table service or order at the bar. I asked someone if we could sit upstairs and got a ‘that’s a different restaurant’ reply so we grabbed seats outside. Waited a while - nothing - so I went inside to see if it’s bar service. Nearly bumped into another staff member and when I enquired she snapped ‘table service’ so I scuttled back outside. Waited another 5 minutes, still nothing so left.

Walked a couple of minutes to another beautiful bakery with friendly staff and a warm welcome.

We went for a drink to the Ist floor cafe expecting to see Cubist cups, plates etc. No luck. We ordered 2 glasses of very bad wine, drank a bit and left . Don’t bother going to the cafe.

We were excited to try the restaurant. Despite the early hour, it was crowded. We weren’t certain if we needed to be seated so after verbally trying to get her attention, I lightly touched the waitress on the arm. She immediately turned and snapped “don’t touch me!” I was so shocked and offended that we selected another restaurant. Perhaps we will return on our next trip and sit in the section of a different waiter.

The place is extremely pleasant, inside in the cafe (cubist décor) as well as outside on the terrace (nice outdoor seating where you can watcb people passes by). I think that the best thing about this cafe is the buildingitself and interior where it is placed. It's cubistic and well designed, really characteristic place, worth seeing.
The corner building between Ovocny Trh and Celetna Street is really an architectonic marvel. The house that was originally a warehouse constructed of a steel boundary and has a spiral staircase that twists three floors up from unusual angles.
This cubist house is named after the black madonnafigur hanging on the corner of the Building.
The cafe seems to be a bit less touristic

This is a really interesting building in the heart of Prague. If houses two cafes, a museum to Czech cubism and Kubista a shop which sells cubist porcelain etc. All together it’s definitely worth visiting. I recommend the museum very highly, and the Grand Café Orient too. Yes the staff are a bit snotty, and they are not fast. But that’s all part of the whole experience.

I was excited to see that Prague had a museum totally dedicated to cubism. The museum did not disappoint. Although small with not a lot of ceramic and furniture examples, what they did have was great. There's a short film on the local cubism architecture found around Prague. They have a map if you want to find all the local architecture on your own. I topped off my visit with a three hour privet tour that took me to neighborhoods I would have not visited. This was the highlight of my visit.

We saw the Black Madonna before hearing the story. She is standing in a gilded sort of cage on the outside of the building. It's definitely worth a picture.

The ambience is excellent but service is terrible. We had to wait for it for a long time. I thought maybe it's a self service - no. I was asked to pick up our cakes, even to bring one to our table and to wait for the waitress to order the coffee. The waitress had ostentatiously ignored us for another ca 20 minutes. So I asked another waiter if we can order coffee. He said yes and took our order. After another 20 minutes we got our coffee - cold...
At least the cakes were quite nice.

Being something of artistic Philistine I was unaware that the Czechs had taken themselves down their own Cubism road. Needless to say my wife knew better and so this was on the to-do list during our visit. There are more erudite reviews than mine and all I am going to add is that there is a small, well curated exhibition of furniture and art with excellent explanation boards setting the pieces in a world and Slavic context. It becomes easy to see where Charles Rennie Mackintosh fits in and why Germany was more receptive to his designs than Scotland was at the time.

The exhibition requires an hour which is blissfully tourist free and is a welcome relief to pavement pounding.
